Does Portfolio Recovery Offer Pay for Delete?

Portfolio Recovery Associates does not run a traditional pay-for-delete program because it doesn’t need to: PRA already requests removal of its tradeline from Experian, Equifax, and TransUnion within roughly 30 days after your final payment posts, whether you pay the full balance or settle for less.1Portfolio Recovery Associates. Debt Happens, So Can Recovery You don’t have to send a special letter, negotiate the deletion as a condition, or get a manager’s approval. It is a standing company policy.

What PRA’s Deletion Policy Actually Covers

Most collectors update a paid account to show a zero balance and leave the negative mark sitting on your report for up to seven years. PRA instead asks the bureaus to remove the tradeline entirely once your payment clears.1Portfolio Recovery Associates. Debt Happens, So Can Recovery The policy applies to accounts paid in full and to accounts settled for a reduced amount.

PRA is also required to delete its tradeline once seven years have passed from the original date of delinquency, whether or not you ever paid.1Portfolio Recovery Associates. Debt Happens, So Can Recovery Because deletion is corporate policy rather than a case-by-case decision, you should get consistent answers if you call to confirm. Worth noting: PRA has been sanctioned by the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau for credit reporting problems, including failing to investigate disputes properly and on time.2Consumer Financial Protection Bureau. CFPB Orders Portfolio Recovery Associates to Pay More Than $24 Million for Illegal Debt Collection Practices and Reporting Violations Verify the deletion actually happens instead of assuming it did.

Why Deletion Beats a “Paid” Status

Under the FICO 8 scoring model, which most mortgage lenders and many credit card issuers still rely on, a paid collection with an original balance over $100 continues to hurt your score. The mark stays; only the balance changes to zero. FICO 9 ignores paid collections, but it is not what most lenders are pulling.

When PRA has the tradeline deleted, the collection disappears from your report under every model. That typically produces a larger and faster score improvement than a status change to “paid.” How much it moves depends on the rest of your file. If the PRA account is your only derogatory item, the lift can be significant. If you have several other negatives, the effect is smaller.

Check These Things Before You Pay

Make PRA Verify the Debt

Within 30 days of receiving PRA’s initial notice, you can send a written dispute, and PRA must stop collection activity until it provides verification.3Office of the Law Revision Counsel. 15 USC 1692g – Validation of Debts The validation notice itself must identify the original creditor, the amount owed on the itemization date, and an itemized breakdown of the current balance.4eCFR. 12 CFR 1006.34 – Notice for Validation of Debts Compare those details against your own records before you send any money.

Watch the Statute of Limitations

Every state sets a deadline on how long a creditor has to sue you over an unpaid debt. For credit card debt, the window usually runs three to ten years depending on the state. After it expires, the debt is time-barred and a collector cannot legally sue you to collect it.5Consumer Financial Protection Bureau. Collection of Time-Barred Debts

Here’s the trap. In many states, making even a small payment on an old debt can restart that clock and reopen the window for a lawsuit.6Consumer Financial Protection Bureau. Can Debt Collectors Collect a Debt That’s Several Years Old If your debt is close to or past the limitations period, paying could put you in a worse legal position than ignoring the account. The statute of limitations is a separate clock from the seven-year credit reporting limit; a debt can be too old to sue over but still appear on your report, or the other way around.

Get Any Settlement in Writing

If you negotiate for less than the full balance, document the terms in writing before you pay. The CFPB recommends getting written confirmation of any repayment or settlement agreement, including the promise to stop collection and forgive the remaining balance, before you send money.7Consumer Financial Protection Bureau. How Do I Negotiate a Settlement With a Debt Collector The written agreement should list the account number, the exact dollar amount that resolves the debt, confirmation that no further balance will be owed, and the payment date. PRA’s deletion policy may be automatic, but written proof protects you if something goes sideways.

The Tax Bill on a Settlement

If PRA forgives $600 or more as part of a settlement, it must report the forgiven amount to the IRS on Form 1099-C.8IRS. About Form 1099-C, Cancellation of Debt The IRS generally treats forgiven debt as taxable income. If you owed $5,000 and settled for $2,500, the other $2,500 can show up as income on your return.

There is an important exception. If your total liabilities exceeded the fair market value of your total assets immediately before the cancellation, meaning you were insolvent, you can exclude some or all of the forgiven amount from your income.9Office of the Law Revision Counsel. 26 USC 108 – Income From Discharge of Indebtedness The exclusion is capped at the amount by which you were insolvent. To claim it, attach Form 982 to your federal return for the year the debt was canceled.10IRS. Publication 4681 – Canceled Debts, Foreclosures, Repossessions, and Abandonments Many people settling collection accounts qualify and never claim it.

How to Pay and What to Have Ready

Before you contact PRA, pull together:

  • Your PRA account number, which appears in the upper right of any official collection letter and is different from the original creditor’s account number.
  • The current balance from your validation notice.
  • Your negotiated settlement figure and any written confirmation, if you’ve already worked out a reduced payoff.
  • Bank routing and account numbers for an electronic payment, or a debit card with a daily limit high enough to cover the amount.
  • Your original validation notice, so you can confirm you’re paying the right entity for the right debt.

PRA accepts payment several ways. The online portal at portfoliorecovery.com/prapay lets you sign in with your account number or the last four digits of your Social Security number along with the last name on the account, then select either the full balance or a pre-negotiated settlement figure.11Portfolio Recovery Associates. The deletion process starts once your payment posts and a confirmation number is issued.

How Long Before the Tradeline Comes Off

PRA sends its deletion request to the three bureaus within about 30 days after your payment clears.1Portfolio Recovery Associates. Debt Happens, So Can Recovery The bureaus then take their own time to process it. Under the FCRA, they have 30 days to complete an investigation, with a possible 15-day extension if you submit additional documentation.13Federal Trade Commission. Disputing Errors on Your Credit Reports In practice, expect the tradeline to disappear roughly 45 to 75 days after your final payment posts.

During that window, PRA should mail you a letter confirming the account is paid in full or settled in full. Keep it. You’ll need it if the mark hasn’t dropped off after about 75 days.

If the Deletion Doesn’t Happen

Pull free reports from all three bureaus weekly through AnnualCreditReport.com and check each one separately, because PRA’s request can process at different speeds across the three agencies.14Federal Trade Commission. You Now Have Permanent Access to Free Weekly Credit Reports

If the PRA tradeline is still there after 75 days, file a dispute with any bureau still showing it. Attach a copy of your paid-in-full or settled-in-full letter and explain briefly that the account was resolved and should have been deleted. The bureau must investigate within 30 days of receiving your dispute.13Federal Trade Commission. Disputing Errors on Your Credit Reports If the mark survives the investigation, you can add a brief statement to your credit file and file a complaint with the CFPB.

The Seven-Year Backstop

Deletion policy aside, federal law caps how long a collection can appear on your report. Under the FCRA, a collection account cannot be reported for more than seven years from the original delinquency, calculated as 180 days after the first missed payment that sent the account to collections.15Office of the Law Revision Counsel. 15 USC 1681c – Requirements Relating to Information Contained in Consumer Reports Paying or settling does not restart that clock.

That changes the math on whether to pay at all. If the original delinquency was six years ago, the tradeline will drop off on its own in about a year whether you pay or not, so paying mainly benefits PRA and removes any remaining lawsuit risk. If the delinquency was recent, paying triggers deletion years earlier than the seven-year clock would.
