Does Not Using a Credit Card Hurt Your Credit?

Not using a credit card doesn’t hurt your credit score on its own, but what the card issuer does about the inactivity can. The real risks are a lowered credit limit, an involuntary account closure, and — eventually — the loss of the account from your credit report altogether. Each of those can pull your score down even though you haven’t missed a payment or added any debt.

Why Inactivity Is a Problem

Leaving a card in a drawer is fine for the scoring model. In fact, an unused card with a zero balance keeps its full credit limit in your total available credit, which tends to push your overall utilization ratio down. Utilization — the share of your available revolving credit you’re currently using — makes up roughly 30% of a FICO score.1myFICO. How Are FICO Scores Calculated More room, lower ratio, better score.

The problem is what the issuer may do in response to that silence. Card companies earn money when you use the card, so an account that produces nothing gets flagged. Some issuers first cut the credit limit; others move straight to closing the account.2Experian. Can My Credit Limit Decrease If I Don’t Spend Enough Either action shrinks your total available credit, and that can push utilization up on the cards you do use, even if your spending hasn’t changed.

One thing worth knowing: using nothing at all across every card isn’t the ideal setup either. FICO’s data suggests scores are highest when utilization stays low but not zero — generally under 10% — because the model has more to work with when there’s a bit of activity.3myFICO. When an Issuer Can Close an Inactive Card

Federal law forbids a creditor from closing your account solely because you haven’t been charged any finance charges, but it explicitly permits closure once the account has been inactive for three or more consecutive months.4Office of the Law Revision Counsel. 15 USC 1637 – Open End Consumer Credit Plans Most issuers wait longer than the legal minimum, but the threshold varies by card, and some cardholder agreements allow closure with little or no advance notice.

One boundary worth flagging: if the card carries rewards, closure usually forfeits any points, miles, or cash back you haven’t redeemed. Most major issuers keep rewards intact while the account is open and in good standing, so a closure — whether you request it or the bank does — is often the moment those rewards disappear.

How a Closed Card Affects Your Score Over Time

A closed account doesn’t drop off your credit report right away. Closed accounts with positive payment history typically stay on your report for up to 10 years, and FICO continues to count them toward your average account age during that time.5TransUnion. How Closing Accounts Can Affect Credit Scores Length of credit history is about 15% of a FICO score.1myFICO. How Are FICO Scores Calculated

The bigger hit comes later, when the closed account is removed from your report entirely. At that point your average account age is recalculated without it, and if the closed card was one of your older accounts, your visible credit history can shorten noticeably.5TransUnion. How Closing Accounts Can Affect Credit Scores

There’s a smaller effect from credit mix as well. If the closed card was your only revolving account and everything else on your file is installment debt like a mortgage or auto loan, losing the card makes your mix less diverse and can nudge your score down.6Experian. Could You Lose Your Credit Score Entirely?

In the extreme case, yes. FICO needs at least one account that has been reported to a credit bureau within the past six months, plus at least one account that has been open for six months or longer, to generate a score.7myFICO. What Are the Minimum Requirements for a FICO Score If every one of your accounts goes quiet and issuers stop sending monthly updates to the bureaus, you can fall below that first requirement and become unscorable.

VantageScore has looser rules. It can produce a score from a single account, and it only needs an update within the past two years.8Experian. What Is a VantageScore Credit Score Because different lenders pull different models, it’s possible to have a VantageScore but no FICO score, which can lead to unpredictable results when you apply for credit.

This scenario is unlikely for anyone with multiple active accounts. It’s a real concern for someone with a thin file — a single credit card and no loans, for example — who stops using the card for an extended period.

How to Keep an Unused Card Active

A small, occasional charge is enough to keep most cards in good standing. Using each card at least once every three months keeps you safely above the federal inactivity threshold that lets issuers close the account.4Office of the Law Revision Counsel. 15 USC 1637 – Open End Consumer Credit Plans A few practical ways to do it:

  • Put a small recurring bill on the card, like a streaming subscription, so activity happens automatically each month.9Equifax. Inactive Credit Card – Use It or Lose It
  • Rotate the card into your normal spending once a quarter, then pay it off in full.
  • Turn on autopay so a forgotten bill doesn’t wreck your payment history, which is the largest scoring factor at 35%.1myFICO. How Are FICO Scores Calculated

What to Do If the Card Was Already Closed

Move quickly. Some issuers will reinstate a recently closed account, often within a window of 30 days or less. Call the number on your most recent statement and ask. Reinstatement preserves your account history and generally avoids a hard inquiry, which reapplying does not.

If the issuer refuses, applying for a new card is your remaining option, but the new account starts at zero age and triggers a hard pull. From there, protect what you have: keep utilization low on your other cards, pay on time every month, and consider a small recurring charge on any other card you rarely use so the same closure doesn’t happen twice.
