Does Nissan Warranty Cover Windshield? Plans, Costs, and Recalls

Nissan’s new-vehicle warranty does not cover windshield damage from rocks, road debris, or other outside impacts. It pays for windshield glass only when the problem traces back to a manufacturing defect, such as distorted glass, air bubbles in the laminate, or faulty factory installation. For a chip, a crack from a flying stone, or a scratch, you’ll need either an optional Nissan protection plan or your own auto insurance.

What the Factory Warranty Actually Covers

Nissan’s basic new-vehicle limited warranty runs 3 years or 36,000 miles, whichever comes first. The powertrain warranty extends to 5 years or 60,000 miles. Neither treats windshield glass as a standard covered part. The 2025 Nissan Warranty Information Booklet states the warranty “does not cover damage, failures or corrosion resulting from or caused by glass breakage, unless resulting from defects in material or workmanship.”¹ The Certified Pre-Owned warranty uses nearly identical language and lists “glass” as not covered.²

The word doing the work in that exclusion is “unless.” A genuine manufacturing defect is still a warranty matter. Nissan’s Technical Service Bulletin NTB09-081J, which applies across all models, tells dealers what counts. Warranty-eligible issues include distorted glass, open bubbles, surface blisters, and cracks caused by improper installation during vehicle assembly.³

The same bulletin instructs dealers to deny claims for:

Impact damage. Cone-shaped breaks, crush marks, and star cracks from rocks or debris, even when the crack runs from a tiny impact point all the way to the edge of the glass.
Scratches from sand, dirt, keys or other metal objects, or wiper blades running on dry or dirty glass.
Problems caused by aftermarket window tinting.

Dealers use 10x magnification and a ballpoint pen tip to find impact points as small as 1 millimeter. Locate one, and the claim is denied. The bulletin also notes that Nissan “typically does not find stress-related cracks occurring after the pre-delivery inspection,” so once a car clears initial inspection, cracks are presumed to come from outside forces rather than the factory.³

Nissan’s Optional Windshield Protection Plans

Because the factory warranty excludes most real-world glass damage, Nissan sells add-on coverage through its Security+Plus extended service plans. Two tiers include windshield coverage: the Platinum Protection Plan and the Ultimate Platinum Protection Plan.⁴

The Platinum plan covers repair of front windshield chips and cracks caused by rocks and road debris on public roads. Read the limits carefully before buying:

Repair only. The plan explicitly does not cover full windshield replacement.⁵
Road hazards only. Damage must come from propelled rocks or road debris.
Prior authorization is required before any work begins.
The windshield repair benefit is not available to Florida residents.⁶

Repairs can be done at a dealership, at home, or at your workplace. Some individual Nissan dealers also sell their own windshield protection packages that go further than the manufacturer’s plan and can include replacement and ADAS recalibration, but those are dealership products with terms that vary, not part of any Nissan corporate offering.

When Insurance Is the Better Route

For damage the factory warranty won’t touch, auto insurance is usually the primary path. Most comprehensive policies cover windshield damage from road debris, weather, and vandalism. Several states require insurers to waive the deductible entirely for windshield claims when the driver carries comprehensive coverage:

Florida: no deductible on windshield repair or replacement, though other auto glass may still carry one.⁷
Arizona: full repair or replacement of all vehicle glass, no deductible.
Kentucky: full glass coverage with no deductible for drivers with comprehensive coverage.
South Carolina: deductible waived for safety glass repair or replacement.⁸

The Florida rule matters especially for Nissan owners, because the Platinum Protection Plan excludes Florida. Florida drivers with comprehensive coverage already have stronger windshield protection through insurance than the Nissan plan would provide.

In states without a zero-deductible mandate, some insurers sell optional glass coverage. Across all 50 states, many insurers waive the deductible for windshield repairs (as opposed to full replacements) when the damage is under six inches long.⁹

Out-of-Pocket Replacement Costs

If nothing covers the damage, cost depends heavily on what technology is built into the glass. Older vehicles without advanced safety features typically run $300 to $600 for a windshield replacement. Newer Nissan models with ADAS features like automatic emergency braking, adaptive cruise control, or lane-departure warning often cost $1,000 or more, because the sensors and cameras mounted at or near the windshield need professional recalibration after replacement.¹⁰ OEM glass costs more than aftermarket but is generally recommended on ADAS-equipped vehicles for sensor accuracy.

Recalls and Lawsuits Worth Checking

Separate from routine chips and cracks, two current Nissan glass issues can put a windshield problem inside a manufacturer program rather than in your wallet.

2025 Sentra Windshield Recall

In late 2025, Nissan recalled 41,797 model-year 2025 Sentra sedans under NHTSA campaign 25V807. Air bubbles were forming in the laminate layer of the front windshield because of misaligned locator pins in glass molds at supplier Vitro’s Mexico factory. The bubbles can impair driver visibility and violate Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standard 205.¹¹ Nissan estimated only about 2.2 percent of those vehicles, roughly 920 cars, actually contain defective glass. Dealers inspect affected cars and replace the windshield free of charge, with owner notifications set for January 2026.¹² The recall does not extend to other Nissan or Infiniti models. A smaller, earlier recall addressed a similar delamination issue in some 2024 Sentras.¹³

Nissan Rogue Rear Window Class Action

A class action filed in January 2026 alleges that rear windshields on 2021 through 2025 Nissan Rogue models can spontaneously shatter without any impact, collision, or extreme weather. The case, Delucia-Roitman et al. v. Nissan North America, Inc. (Case No. 3:26-cv-00014), is pending in the U.S. District Court for the Middle District of Tennessee.¹⁴ Plaintiffs allege Nissan knew about the defect and denied warranty claims by classifying the shattering as ordinary wear and tear, even for vehicles still inside the 3-year/36,000-mile warranty. The lawsuit is in its early stages, with no ruling on the merits.¹⁵ If you own a Rogue in that year range and your rear window has shattered, keep repair records and monitor the case.

If Your Warranty Claim Is Denied

If a dealer denies a warranty claim for a windshield defect you believe is a factory issue, ask for the specific reason in writing and for the inspection documentation. Under Nissan’s internal bulletin, the dealer should have photographs and magnified-inspection results supporting the denial. If the explanation doesn’t hold up, call Nissan Consumer Affairs at 1-800-NISSAN-1 (1-800-647-7261) with the VIN, purchase date, current mileage, dealership name, and a description of the problem.¹

Nissan may offer “special assistance” as goodwill, covering all or part of a repair even outside strict warranty terms. Thorough maintenance records help. Ask whether any adjustment program applies to your specific vehicle, since Nissan sometimes creates these for known defects and mails notices to affected owners.² If those channels fail, Nissan’s warranty booklet directs owners to the BBB AUTO LINE program for mediation and arbitration before pursuing legal remedies.¹
