Does MetLife Cover Invisalign? Plans, Payouts, and Age Limits

MetLife does cover Invisalign under some of its dental plans, but not all. The MetLife Federal Dental Plan (FEDVIP) explicitly includes Invisalign under both its Standard and High options, and many employer-sponsored MetLife PPO plans with orthodontic benefits extend to clear aligners. Other plans exclude aligners as cosmetic, limit orthodontic coverage to children, or impose long waiting periods. The only way to know for certain is to check your own plan documents before you start treatment.

Which MetLife Plans Cover Clear Aligners

MetLife sells dental coverage through four main channels, and orthodontic rules differ in each.

Federal Dental Plan (FEDVIP)

This is the clearest “yes.” MetLife states that Invisalign braces are a covered service under both the Standard and High FEDVIP options, and the plan includes adult orthodontic coverage with no waiting period.1MetLife FEDVIP. Federal Dental Plan FAQ2MetLife FEDVIP. FEDVIP Dental Plan Summary

Employer-Sponsored Group Plans

Many employer PPO plans through MetLife cover orthodontics, but typically only for dependent children up to age 19, and some exclude adult orthodontics entirely.3MetLife. HSA for Dental Whether Invisalign specifically qualifies depends on the plan’s definition of orthodontia. MetLife notes that some plans “only cover traditional metal braces, deeming ceramic braces and clear aligners cosmetic and therefore not eligible for reimbursement.”4MetLife. Orthodontics: What to Know About Braces for Kids and Adults A plan with orthodontic benefits is not automatically a plan with Invisalign benefits.

Veterans Affairs Dental Insurance Program (VADIP)

MetLife’s VADIP covers orthodontics only under the High Option, only for dependent children under 19, and only after a 24-month waiting period. Clear aligners are covered at 50% with a $3,000 lifetime maximum per dependent. Switching options or any gap in enrollment restarts the 24-month clock.5MetLife. VADIP FAQs6MetLife VADIP. TakeAlong Dental (Individual Plans)

MetLife’s individual TakeAlong Dental plans list “orthodontics” among covered services but do not publicly specify whether Invisalign qualifies or on what terms. For plan-specific details, MetLife directs consumers to 1-844-263-8336.7MetLife. TakeAlong Dental

How Much MetLife Pays

Where Invisalign is covered, MetLife generally pays 50% of covered charges up to a lifetime orthodontic maximum. That maximum is the hard ceiling on everything MetLife will ever pay toward your orthodontic care, no matter how long treatment lasts.

Under FEDVIP, the lifetime maximums are:

  • Standard Option: $1,500 per person (adult or child).
  • High Option: $3,500 per child, $3,000 per adult.

Both options pay 50% whether the orthodontist is in network or out of network.8MetLife FEDVIP. Federal Dental Plan Details

Employer plans follow the same structure with their own ceilings. One employer plan reviewed set a $1,500 lifetime orthodontic maximum on its low option and $2,000 on its high option, covering only dependent children up to age 19.9FFGA Benefits. MetLife Dental Benefit Summary

The average Invisalign case runs about $5,100, with a typical range of $1,800 to $9,500 depending on complexity. Orthodontic insurance benefits generally cover $1,000 to $3,500, leaving most patients with $2,000 to $4,500 out of pocket.10Torres Orthodontics. How Much Does Invisalign Treatment Cost

The 50% coinsurance is the same in or out of network, but the total bill is not. In-network orthodontists accept MetLife’s negotiated fees, which run 30% to 50% below average market rates. Out of network, the orthodontist sets the price and you pay the gap between that price and MetLife’s plan allowance on top of your coinsurance. Out-of-network visits under FEDVIP also carry an annual deductible ($100 Standard, $50 High) that in-network care does not.2MetLife FEDVIP. FEDVIP Dental Plan Summary

The Alternate Benefit Catch

One rule often surprises Invisalign patients. MetLife’s plan language says that “where two or more professionally acceptable dental treatments for a dental condition exist, reimbursement is based on the least costly treatment alternative.”11FFGA Benefits. MetLife Dental Summary

In practice, MetLife may reimburse Invisalign at the rate it would pay for traditional braces if it considers braces a professionally acceptable alternative. You absorb the difference, even with an in-network provider.1MetLife FEDVIP. Federal Dental Plan FAQ This is why a pre-treatment estimate matters: it tells you whether the alternate benefit clause will apply to your case and what you will actually owe.

Who Qualifies: Age Limits and Waiting Periods

Eligibility rules vary by plan more than almost any other factor.

  • FEDVIP covers both adults and children with no orthodontic waiting period. It excludes dependent children age 22 and over for civilian enrollees, or age 21 and over for TRICARE-eligible enrollees.1MetLife FEDVIP. Federal Dental Plan FAQ2MetLife FEDVIP. FEDVIP Dental Plan Summary

How to Confirm Your Own Coverage

Before signing an orthodontist’s treatment contract, verify your plan’s terms directly. MetLife and its plan documents suggest four steps:

  • Log into the MyBenefits portal at online.metlife.com to view your covered services, lifetime maximums, coinsurance rates, and exclusions. Orthodontic benefits are often listed as “Class D.”4MetLife. Orthodontics: What to Know About Braces for Kids and Adults
  • Ask your orthodontist to submit a pre-treatment estimate. MetLife will review the proposed Invisalign plan and tell you in writing what it expects to pay and what you will owe. This is the only reliable way to find out if the alternate benefit provision will reduce your reimbursement.13MetLife. Dental Claims: How to File One and What to Expect

Ways to Lower What You Still Owe

Even with coverage, most patients pay several thousand dollars out of pocket. A few options can shrink the balance:

  • Pay with an HSA or FSA. Orthodontic expenses, including Invisalign, qualify as eligible medical expenses, so pre-tax dollars effectively discount the cost.3MetLife. HSA for Dental
  • Stay in network. Negotiated fees run 30% to 50% below average charges, which lowers both MetLife’s payout and your share.8MetLife FEDVIP. Federal Dental Plan Details
  • Ask the orthodontist about zero-interest financing, pay-in-full discounts, or multi-family-member rates.4MetLife. Orthodontics: What to Know About Braces for Kids and Adults
  • If you also carry a Federal Employee Health Benefits (FEHB) plan alongside FEDVIP, the FEHB plan pays first on dental procedures and MetLife pays second, which can expand your total coverage.1MetLife FEDVIP. Federal Dental Plan FAQ
