Original Medicare does not cover dental bridges. Parts A and B exclude services connected to the replacement of teeth, and a bridge is by definition tooth replacement, so the question of whether Medicare covers dental bridges comes down to what other coverage you have alongside it. Some Medicare Advantage plans pay a share of the cost, standalone dental policies and VA programs can help, and a few state Medicaid programs cover bridges for dual-eligible beneficiaries. Without one of those, you pay the full price yourself.
Why Original Medicare Won’t Pay
The Social Security Act bars Medicare from paying for “services in connection with the care, treatment, filling, removal, or replacement of teeth or structures directly supporting the teeth.”1Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services. Medicare Dental Services Medicare.gov lists dentures and implants as examples of non-covered items and says beneficiaries “pay all costs” for routine dental care.2Medicare.gov. Dental Services CMS classifies bridges under the same tooth-replacement exclusion.
Medicare does pay for a narrow set of dental services when they are “inextricably linked to the clinical success” of a covered medical procedure. Those exceptions cover exams, extractions, infection treatment, or dental stabilization tied to things like organ or bone marrow transplants, heart valve surgery, cancer treatment, dialysis for end-stage renal disease, jaw fractures, and tumor surgery.1Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services. Medicare Dental Services2Medicare.gov. Dental Services3Center for Medicare Advocacy. Dental Coverage Under Medicare None of them extend to placing a bridge afterward. Even when Medicare pays for an extraction before radiation to the head and neck, the bridge to fill that space is still excluded as tooth replacement.
What a Bridge Costs Out of Pocket
Prices vary by type, materials, number of teeth, and region. Typical ranges:
- Traditional bridge, crowns on both sides with a pontic in the middle: $2,000 to $5,000.4Humana. Cost of Dental Bridges
- Cantilever bridge, crown on one side only: $2,000 to $5,000.4Humana. Cost of Dental Bridges
- Maryland bridge, metal wings bonded behind adjacent teeth: $1,500 to $2,500.4Humana. Cost of Dental Bridges
- Implant-supported bridge, anchored to surgically placed implants: $5,000 to $15,000.4Humana. Cost of Dental Bridges
The oral exam, X-rays, any extractions, and anesthesia can add several hundred dollars more.5Aflac. How Much Do Dental Bridges Cost With and Without Insurance Bridges also need replacing. Traditional and cantilever bridges last roughly 10 to 15 years, Maryland bridges 5 to 10 years, and implant-supported bridges 15 years or longer with proper care.6Houston Prosthodontist. Medicare Advantage: The Most Common Path to Partial Coverage
Medicare Advantage (Part C) plans, sold by private insurers, often bundle dental benefits. In 2026, roughly 98% of enrollees in individual Medicare Advantage plans are in plans offering some dental coverage.7KFF. Medicare Advantage in 2026: Premiums, Out-of-Pocket Limits, Supplemental Benefits, and Prior Authorization The number drops sharply once you ask whether that coverage includes major work like bridges. A study using late-2023 data found that only about 8.4% of Medicare Advantage plans with dental benefits qualified as truly comprehensive, meaning they covered diagnostic, restorative, endodontic, periodontic, extraction, and prosthodontic services.8National Library of Medicine. Medicare Advantage Dental Benefit Comprehensiveness
When a plan does cover bridges, they fall under “major” procedures. The industry-standard structure pays 100% for preventive care like cleanings and exams, 80% for basic procedures like fillings and root canals, and 50% for major procedures like bridges, crowns, and implants.9Delta Dental. Most cap total dental spending per year, often between $1,000 and $3,000.11SummaCare. 2026 Dental Coverage Because a traditional bridge can easily top $3,000, the annual cap often leaves a real balance even when coverage exists, and average annual dental maximums in Medicare Advantage have declined slightly since 2024.12Healthscape. 2026 Medicare Advantage Supplemental Benefit Landscape Analysis
Before signing up for a Medicare Advantage plan because of dental, check the Evidence of Coverage for three things: whether major services are included, the coinsurance percentage, and the annual benefit maximum.
Standalone Dental Insurance
If you stay in Original Medicare, or your Medicare Advantage plan skips major services, you can buy a standalone dental policy. These are sold by private insurers like Delta Dental and are available on healthcare.gov or directly from carriers.13Delta Dental. Supplemental Dental Insurance for Medicare Medigap policies, which supplement Original Medicare’s cost-sharing, generally do not cover dental services.
Standalone plans typically follow the same 100-80-50 tiered structure and cover about half the cost of a bridge. Many impose a waiting period on major work, so someone who signs up today may not be able to use the bridge benefit for months. Annual caps often sit between $1,000 and $1,500, which may not cover a bridge in full.13Delta Dental. VA Dental Benefits and VADIP
Veterans with a 100% service-connected disability rating, or who experienced dental trauma during active duty, can qualify for broad or comprehensive VA dental care that includes bridges.15VA. VA Dental Patients Veterans who don’t qualify for free VA dental care can buy a reduced-cost private policy through the VA Dental Insurance Program (VADIP).16VA. VA Dental Insurance Program VADIP uses two carriers. MetLife classifies bridges as “Class C — Major” and covers them at 30% (standard) or 50% (high option) in-network.17MetLife. VADIP Plan Options Delta Dental’s VADIP Comprehensive and Prime tiers cover bridges at 50% in-network after a nine-month waiting period. Monthly veteran-only premiums start around $19 for the basic tier and run to roughly $40 for the top option.18Delta Dental. VADIP Plans
Medicaid for Dual-Eligible Beneficiaries
People eligible for both Medicare and Medicaid may get bridge coverage through their state Medicaid program. Adult dental benefits vary widely by state. New York and North Carolina provide extensive dental benefits with no annual spending cap.19CHCS. Medicaid Adult Dental Benefits Overview Appendix Colorado covers bridges for members in certain home and community-based service waivers, with a $10,000 limit over five years for major services.20Health First Colorado. Dental Schools and Community Health Centers
Dental school clinics offer treatment by student dentists under licensed faculty supervision, often at substantially reduced prices, and are open to the public regardless of income.22U.S. Department of Health and Human Services. Federally Qualified Health Centers use a sliding fee scale tied to income and accept Medicare.24Rural Health Information Hub. Comprehensive Community Health Centers in the Los Angeles area, for instance, lists dental bridges among its restorative services and accepts Medicare.25Comprehensive Community Health Centers. Dental Savings Plans
Dental savings plans are not insurance. You pay an annual fee, typically $100 to $200, and get discounted rates from a network of participating dentists. Discounts on bridges and crowns typically run 40% to 50% off the dentist’s regular fee. No waiting periods, no annual maximum, no claim forms, no pre-existing-condition exclusions. The trade-off: you pay the discounted fee in full at the time of service, and the dentist network may be small, especially outside cities.26Mutual of Omaha. Dental Savings Plans for Seniors
When It’s Worth Appealing a Denial
If Medicare or a Medicare Advantage plan denies a dental service you believe should fall under the medical-necessity exceptions, you can appeal. The denial letter explains the first step. Original Medicare uses a five-level appeals process starting with a redetermination by the Medicare contractor; Medicare Advantage plans run their own parallel process, beginning with an internal organization determination and moving to an independent review entity.27Medicare.gov. Appeals28Center for Medicare Advocacy. Medicare Coverage Appeals Gather documentation from both the medical provider and the dentist showing why the dental service was integral to a covered medical procedure. Free counseling is available through the State Health Insurance Assistance Program at shiphelp.org.
For a routine bridge that isn’t tied to a covered medical procedure, an appeal is unlikely to succeed. The statutory exclusion for tooth replacement is clear, and the path to coverage runs through one of the private or state programs above, not through Medicare itself.
