Does Klarna Pull Credit? Soft vs. Hard Checks and Bureau Reporting

Klarna does not pull hard credit on any of its payment products. Every checkout—Pay in 4, Pay in 30, the Klarna Card, and monthly financing—runs through a soft credit check, which is invisible to other lenders and has no effect on your credit score.1Klarna US. Does Klarna Perform a Credit Check and Will This Affect My Credit Score That said, if you take out a Klarna monthly financing loan, the loan itself and your payment history on it are reported to the credit bureaus, so your score can still be affected over time by how you handle the debt.

What Klarna Actually Checks at Checkout

A soft check lets Klarna verify your identity and review basic credit information without filing a formal credit application. Because no application is filed, the inquiry does not appear on the version of your credit report that mortgage lenders, credit card issuers, or auto lenders see. You can see it when you pull your own report, but no one else can.

Does Klarna Report Anything to the Credit Bureaus

Some of it, yes. The answer depends on which product you used.

Pay in 4, Pay in 30, and Klarna Card

Klarna shares no information with credit bureaus about Pay in 4 transactions, Pay in 30 transactions, or Klarna Card activity.3Klarna US. Does Klarna Report to Credit Bureaus Paying on time builds nothing on your credit file. Missing payments damages nothing on your credit file either, at least not through the bureaus. Klarna can still charge late fees and restrict your account internally.

Monthly Financing (Pay Over Time)

Klarna’s Pay over time option—monthly installments running from 6 to 24 months—is a different story. For term loans opened on or after November 1, 2024, Klarna reports the loan and your payment activity to TransUnion, including on-time payments, overdue payments, and defaults. Defaults and late payments are also shared with Experian.3Klarna US. Does Klarna Report to Credit Bureaus4Klarna International. Klarna Will Begin Sharing Term Loan Data With Credit Bureaus

Klarna has stated that this reported data currently does not feed into FICO or VantageScore calculations, and that only the consumer sees it when pulling their own report. Klarna has also indicated that this may change: term loan reporting may factor into credit scores in the future, and lenders may eventually be able to see the payment history.4Klarna International. Soft Inquiry vs. Hard Inquiry

The distinction matters if you are weighing Klarna against a store card or a personal loan, both of which usually require a hard pull.

A hard inquiry happens when you formally apply for credit and the lender requests your full credit report. Under the Fair Credit Reporting Act, a consumer reporting agency can share your report when a business intends to use it for a credit decision you initiated.5Office of the Law Revision Counsel. 15 U.S.C. 1681b – Permissible Purposes of Consumer Reports Hard inquiries stay on your report for up to two years, and FICO looks at the last 12 months when calculating your score.6Experian. Soft inquiries carry none of that weight. They are visible only to you, do not affect your score, and cover things like pre-screened offers, checking your own credit, and buy-now-pay-later eligibility checks like Klarna’s. If an unfamiliar hard inquiry appears on your report and you never authorized it, the Fair Credit Reporting Act gives you the right to dispute it with the credit bureau.
