Does Klarna Check Credit? Soft Checks, Reports, and Missed Payments

Using Klarna does involve a credit check, but only a soft one. Every current U.S. Klarna product — Pay in 4, Pay in 30 days, Pay over time, and the Klarna Credit Card — triggers a soft credit inquiry that is invisible to other lenders and does not lower your credit score.1Klarna. Does Klarna Perform a Credit Check and Will This Affect My Credit Score What can still reach your credit report is how you pay Klarna back after the purchase.

What the Soft Check Does

A soft credit check lets Klarna see a snapshot of your credit file to verify your identity and decide whether to approve the transaction. Because it isn’t a formal credit application, it leaves no record that future lenders can see, and it has no effect on your score. You can use Klarna over and over without stacking up inquiries on your report.

The soft check runs on every Klarna product available in the U.S. That includes Pay over time, which functions much like a personal loan: it carries an APR of 0.00%–35.99%, stretches payments across months, and is issued by WebBank, an FDIC-member bank, in partnership with Klarna.2Klarna. Why No Hard Inquiry Matters

A hard inquiry happens when a lender formally pulls your full credit report for a mortgage, auto loan, credit card, or similar product. Hard inquiries are recorded on your credit report and visible to anyone else who pulls it.4Experian. What Is a Hard Inquiry and How Does It Affect Credit

A single hard inquiry typically shaves fewer than five points off a FICO score, and that scoring impact fades after about 12 months.5myFICO. Does Checking Your Credit Score Lower It The record itself remains on your report for two years.4Experian. What Is a Hard Inquiry and How Does It Affect Credit Several hard pulls clustered together can signal to lenders that you’re taking on a lot of new debt at once.

None of that applies to Klarna, which does not perform hard inquiries for any of its current U.S. products.1Klarna. What Klarna Reports After the Purchase

The credit check at checkout is one thing. What Klarna sends to credit bureaus about your payment behavior afterward is another, and it depends on which product you used.

For Pay over time loans, Klarna shares payment data — on-time payments, late payments, and defaults — with TransUnion and Experian.6Klarna. Does Klarna Report to Credit Bureaus For now, that data is visible only to you when you look at your own credit report. Other lenders and standard credit scoring models don’t yet factor it into your score.7Klarna International. Klarna Will Begin Sharing Term Loan Data With Credit Bureaus Klarna has said this could change once scoring companies build models suited to buy-now-pay-later products.

For Pay in 4, Pay in 30 days, and Pay now purchases, Klarna does not share any payment information with credit bureaus.6Klarna. Does Klarna Report to Credit Bureaus Klarna has said the U.S. credit reporting framework doesn’t yet reflect how short-term BNPL products are used, and it will hold off on reporting that data until scoring calculations can handle it appropriately.7Klarna International. Klarna Will Begin Sharing Term Loan Data With Credit Bureaus

Klarna does not currently report to Equifax for any product. So short-term Klarna activity doesn’t appear on your credit report at all, and Pay over time data won’t influence your score through standard channels for now.

How a Missed Payment Can Still Hurt Your Credit

The soft-check-only rule protects you at signup. It doesn’t protect you if you stop paying.

If a scheduled Klarna payment fails, the missed amount rolls into your next installment, and late fees may apply depending on the plan you’re using.8Klarna US. What Happens If I Can’t Pay on Time Missed payments can also block you from making new Klarna purchases.

If you still haven’t paid by the final reminder date, Klarna transfers the outstanding debt to a collections agency.9Klarna US. Why Is My Debt in Collection Once a debt reaches collections, the collection agency may independently report it to the credit bureaus, and that reporting can severely damage your credit score regardless of which Klarna product you originally used.

Pay over time carries a second, more direct route to your credit report: late payments and defaults on those loans are reported by Klarna itself to TransUnion and Experian.6Klarna. Does Klarna Report to Credit Bureaus That data doesn’t yet feed standard scoring models, but it creates a record that could count against you once scoring companies begin incorporating BNPL data.

If Klarna Reports Something Inaccurate

Federal law gives you a way to fight back if the data Klarna sends to a bureau is wrong. Under the Fair Credit Reporting Act, any company that furnishes information to credit bureaus is prohibited from reporting information it knows or has reasonable cause to believe is inaccurate.10Office of the Law Revision Counsel. 15 USC 1681s-2 – Responsibilities of Furnishers of Information to Consumer Reporting Agencies Once you notify Klarna that specific reported information is wrong and it is in fact inaccurate, Klarna has to stop reporting it.

You can also file a dispute directly with the bureau showing the incorrect information, which in Klarna’s case means TransUnion or Experian. The bureau then has 30 days to investigate and must remove or correct any data it cannot verify.11Office of the Law Revision Counsel. 15 USC 1681i – Procedure in Case of Disputed Accuracy Include any Klarna reference numbers you have and a clear description of what’s wrong. You can also ask Klarna to contact the bureau on your behalf, which may speed up the correction.
