Klarna late fees run up to $7 per missed payment on most plans, and the total late fees on any single order are capped at 25% of the purchase price. The fee only applies after a grace period, and one Klarna product carries no late fee at all. What you actually owe, and whether your credit takes a hit, depends on which plan you used at checkout.
How Much Klarna Charges by Plan
The rules shift depending on which payment option you chose.
- Pay in 4: If an installment goes unpaid for 10 days past its due date, Klarna may charge a late fee of up to $7. Each late installment on the same order can trigger its own fee, so missing two of your four payments could cost up to $14.
- Pay Over Time (monthly financing): The late fee is also up to $7 per missed monthly payment. Interest keeps accruing on these longer-term loans, which adds to the cost of falling behind.
- Pay in 30 Days: No late fees currently apply, though Klarna notes individual terms may vary.
The $7 figure is a ceiling, not a flat charge. If 25% of the installment amount is less than $7, the fee drops to that lower amount, and state law can reduce it further.
When the Fee Actually Hits
Klarna does not charge you the moment a payment is missed. If the company cannot pull the scheduled amount from your linked card or bank account on the due date, it tries again. If that second attempt also fails, the missed amount rolls into your next scheduled payment and a late fee of up to $7 is added.
Under the Pay in 4 agreement, the late fee applies only after a payment has been overdue for 10 days. During that window you can update your payment method or pay manually in the app to avoid the fee entirely. Klarna sends reminders through the grace period prompting you to clear the balance before the penalty posts.
The 25% Cap on Total Fees
Even if you miss every payment on an order, the combined late fees Klarna can charge are limited to 25% of the original purchase price. On a $100 order, the most you would ever owe in late fees is $25, no matter how many installments you miss.
For Pay in 4, the late fee on any individual installment also cannot exceed 25% of that installment. On a small order, your per-payment fee may land well below $7.
How to Avoid a Late Fee
Extend Your Due Date
If you know a payment is coming and you are not ready, Klarna lets you push back the due date once per order. Open the app, go to Payments, select the order, tap Options, then Extend due date. Pushing back one payment reschedules all remaining payments on that order biweekly from the new date. The option is not available for Pay Over Time loans.
Pay Manually Before Day 10
You can make a manual payment any time through the app or website. Go to Payments, select the overdue order, and complete the payment with an updated card or bank account. As long as it clears within 10 days of the original due date, no late fee is charged.
Will a Late Payment Hurt Your Credit
That depends entirely on the product. Klarna reports loan and repayment activity for Pay Over Time to TransUnion and Experian, so late payments, missed payments, and defaults on those loans can lower your score.
Klarna does not report Pay in 4, Pay in 30, or Pay in Full activity to any credit bureau. A late payment on those plans will not directly appear on your credit report, though it can still trigger fees and account restrictions.
What Happens if You Keep Ignoring It
Consequences escalate beyond the fee itself. First, your Klarna account is restricted, so you cannot make new purchases until the overdue balance is cleared. Klarna may also block future use of the account even after you pay the debt off.
If the balance stays unpaid past the final due date on your last notice, the debt is transferred to a third-party collection agency. From there you can pay Klarna or the collection agency directly, and both will update your balance. An account in collections can appear on your credit report and significantly affect your score, even for products Klarna does not normally report.
If you are struggling to pay, Klarna encourages contacting them before the account hits collections to discuss alternative repayment options.
Other Costs That Can Ride Along
The $7 fee is not the only charge a missed payment can set off. If Klarna attempts to pull funds and your bank declines the transaction for insufficient funds, your bank may add its own overdraft or NSF fee. Those bank charges are separate from anything Klarna bills and can run considerably higher than $7.
On Pay Over Time loans, interest also keeps accruing on the outstanding balance at rates up to 35.99% APR depending on your creditworthiness. The longer the balance sits unpaid, the more that interest adds to what you owe on top of any late fee.
