The Jeep 4xe tax credit is no longer available for new purchases. The One Big Beautiful Bill, signed July 4, 2025, ended the federal Section 30D clean vehicle credit for any vehicle acquired after September 30, 2025.1Internal Revenue Service. One, Big, Beautiful Bill Provisions And even before that date, both the Wrangler 4xe and Grand Cherokee 4xe had already lost eligibility because their batteries could not meet the tightened sourcing rules that took effect in 2025. The only path to any credit now runs through a binding purchase contract signed with a payment on or before September 30, 2025.
What Changed on September 30, 2025
Section 30D, created by the Inflation Reduction Act of 2022, offered up to $7,500 toward qualifying plug-in hybrids and electric vehicles. The One Big Beautiful Bill cut that program short with a hard cutoff: no credit is allowed for any vehicle acquired after September 30, 2025.2Internal Revenue Service. The 4xe Had Already Lost Eligibility Before Then

By early 2025, both the Wrangler 4xe and Grand Cherokee 4xe had dropped off the qualified list entirely. The 2024 IRS list had shown them at $3,750 each — half the maximum credit, reflecting only the battery-component portion.4Internal Revenue Service. Clean Vehicle Credit 30D – 2024 Qualified Vehicles
The Binding Contract Exception
There is one narrow way the credit can still reach a buyer. If you signed a written binding purchase contract and made a payment (a deposit or a trade-in counts) on or before September 30, 2025, you can claim the credit when you take delivery, even if delivery comes in 2026 or later.2Internal Revenue Service. For Jeep 4xe buyers there is a further wrinkle. The vehicle itself had to be on the IRS qualified list at the time of acquisition. A 2024 model bought in mid-2024 would have qualified for $3,750. A 2025 model purchased in early 2025 likely qualified for nothing, no matter what the contract date says.
What the Credit Was Worth When It Applied
For a qualifying purchase, the maximum credit was $7,500, split into two $3,750 halves — one for critical mineral sourcing, one for battery component manufacturing.5Office of the Law Revision Counsel. 26 USC 30D – Clean Vehicle Credit Jeep 4xe models cleared the component half but not the mineral half, so they qualified for $3,750 when they qualified at all.
The vehicle had to be new, purchased for personal use rather than resale, and assembled in North America. As SUVs, both 4xe models fell under an $80,000 MSRP cap. That figure covers the base price and manufacturer-installed options but not destination charges, dealer add-ons, or taxes.6Internal Revenue Service. How to Claim the Credit on a Pre-Cutoff Purchase
If you transferred the credit to the dealer at the point of sale, you should have received it as a reduction in your purchase price. Transferred credits carry one big advantage: if your tax liability turns out to be smaller than the credit, the excess is not recaptured.8Internal Revenue Service. If you transferred the credit at the dealership but your income for both the delivery year and the year before ends up above the MAGI thresholds, the credit amount gets added back to your tax bill as additional tax.5Office of the Law Revision Counsel. 26 USC 30D – Clean Vehicle Credit Someone who took $3,750 off the price at the dealer and then had an unexpectedly strong income year would owe that money back at filing time.
Leasing No Longer Delivers a Federal Benefit
Leasing used to open a side door. The leasing company was the legal buyer and could claim the commercial clean vehicle credit under Section 45W, which had no income cap or MSRP limit, then pass the savings through as a lower lease payment.6Internal Revenue Service. State and Utility Programs Still Exist
Some states continue to offer rebates, income tax credits, or registration fee reductions for plug-in hybrid vehicles. Structures and amounts vary. A few programs pay cash at purchase; others run through your state income tax return. Eligibility often turns on battery size, buyer income, and sticker price. Check your state’s energy office or department of revenue for current terms. Utility companies in some regions also offer enrollment incentives or discounted charging rates for plug-in owners. These will not replace $3,750 or $7,500 dollar for dollar, but they can still trim the cost of a Jeep 4xe.
