Does Hyundai Warranty Cover Air Conditioning? Parts, Claims, Denials

Yes. Hyundai’s warranty does cover air conditioning, and most A/C hardware falls under the 5-year/60,000-mile New Vehicle Limited Warranty. If your compressor, condenser, evaporator, expansion valve, or another factory-installed A/C component fails from a manufacturing defect inside that window, an authorized dealer should repair or replace it at no cost. The refrigerant charge itself is the one carve-out: it’s covered only for the first year.1Hyundai USA. America’s Best Warranty

Which Warranty Covers Which A/C Part

Hyundai’s coverage is split into tiers, and only two of them touch the climate system.

The New Vehicle Limited Warranty runs 5 years or 60,000 miles, whichever comes first, and covers repair or replacement of any component originally installed by Hyundai that proves defective in materials or factory workmanship. A/C hardware sits here.1Hyundai USA. America’s Best Warranty

The A/C refrigerant charge has its own sub-category: 1 year with unlimited miles. During that first year, a simple top-off is free. After it, a recharge is your expense unless the refrigerant loss is tied to a separate warrantable repair.2Hyundai USA. Owner’s Handbook and Warranty Information

The 10-year/100,000-mile Powertrain Limited Warranty does not cover the A/C system at all. It applies to the engine, transmission, and drivetrain for the original owner only.3Boucher Hyundai. When the Warranty Won’t Pay

Coverage applies to defects in materials or factory workmanship, not to anything that can go wrong with an A/C system. Hyundai’s warranty documentation lists several situations that fall outside coverage:

  • Neglected maintenance. If the scheduled service in the Owner’s Manual wasn’t followed, Hyundai can deny coverage on affected parts.2Hyundai USA. Owner’s Handbook and Warranty Information
  • Aftermarket modifications. Non-genuine parts or unapproved modifications void coverage on resulting damage.
  • Misuse, accidents, or road debris. A condenser punctured by a rock is generally not a warranty issue.
  • Normal wear and tear. Rubber hoses, plastic components, and seals aging out over time are excluded.
  • Improper prior repair. If an unauthorized shop did A/C work that contributed to the failure, that becomes grounds to deny.

Keep your maintenance receipts. If a dispute comes up, those records are the strongest evidence that the vehicle was cared for properly. Federal law also helps here: under the Magnuson-Moss Warranty Act, Hyundai cannot deny a claim solely because you had routine maintenance done at an independent shop rather than a dealership.5Hyundai USA. Used, Certified Pre-Owned, and EV Situations

If you bought the Hyundai used, the 5-year/60,000-mile New Vehicle Limited Warranty transfers to you, so A/C components stay covered for whatever time and mileage remain. What second owners lose is the 10-year/100,000-mile powertrain coverage, which drops to the same 5/60,000 terms. Since A/C was never in the powertrain warranty, that reduction doesn’t change your climate-control coverage.1Hyundai USA. America’s Best Warranty

Hyundai Certified Pre-Owned vehicles carry the balance of the original 5-year/60,000-mile warranty, and climate control is explicitly named in that coverage.6Montrose Auto Outlet. What’s Covered Under a Certified Pre-Owned Hyundai Warranty The extended CPO powertrain terms (10 years/100,000 miles from the original in-service date) cover engine, transmission, and drivetrain only, not A/C.7Terry Lambert Hyundai. Hyundai Certified Pre-Owned Limited Warranty Form

For the IONIQ 5, IONIQ 6, and hybrids, owners sometimes assume the heat-pump climate system rides under the 10-year/100,000-mile EV warranty. It doesn’t. That warranty covers the battery, hybrid starter/generator, power control unit, and traction motor. Heat-pump and other climate components are covered under the same 5-year/60,000-mile New Vehicle Limited Warranty as on gasoline vehicles.1Hyundai USA. America’s Best Warranty

Known A/C Defects Worth Naming at the Service Desk

Hyundai has acknowledged specific A/C defects through Technical Service Bulletins. TSBs are repair instructions sent to dealers. They aren’t recalls, and they don’t automatically extend the warranty, but they do tell a technician exactly how to fix the problem and confirm Hyundai knows about it.

The most significant one involves 2020–2022 Palisade models. TSB 24-HA-003H, issued in December 2024 and superseding an earlier 2021 bulletin, addresses an out-of-specification A/C compressor pulley and hub assembly that can cause reduced cooling, intermittent performance, or complete seizure. Vehicles produced between April 2019 and June 2021 are affected. In-warranty repairs are free. For out-of-warranty vehicles, the bulletin tells technicians to submit a prior-approval request for goodwill consideration, meaning Hyundai may still cover the repair in whole or part.8NHTSA. TSB 24-HA-003H

For IONIQ 5 owners, TSB 23-HA-002H addressed HVAC failures on 2022 and later vehicles, covering the heater control unit, PTC heater, and high-voltage fuse. That bulletin states “normal warranty applies” and instructs dealers to submit a goodwill consideration request for vehicles already out of warranty.9NHTSA. TSB 23-HA-002H

Beyond the Palisade, consumer complaints and at least one law firm investigation have flagged premature A/C compressor failures on 2018–2022 model-year Elantra, Santa Fe, Sonata, and Tucson vehicles. Some owners reported that dealers characterized the failure as “normal” and denied coverage. As of mid-2026, no formal recall or warranty extension has been issued for A/C systems on those broader model lines, and no formal NHTSA investigation has been opened specifically for this issue.8NHTSA. If your model appears on one of these bulletins, mention the TSB number when you drop the vehicle off.

Filing an A/C Warranty Claim

Warranty repairs have to be performed by an authorized Hyundai dealer. Bring your VIN, current mileage, purchase date, and any maintenance receipts. Describe the problem to the service advisor. If the failure qualifies as a manufacturing defect within the warranty period, the dealer processes the claim.

If the service advisor pushes back, ask for the service manager or general manager. Beyond that, Hyundai Customer Care is reachable at 1-800-633-5151 (Monday through Friday, 6 a.m. to 5 p.m. PST; Saturday, 6:30 a.m. to 3 p.m. PST) or at consumeraffairs@hmausa.com.2Hyundai USA. Owner’s Handbook and Warranty Information If the A/C failure made the vehicle unsafe or inoperable and you had it towed, contact Customer Care to request towing reimbursement.

If Your Claim Is Denied

A denial isn’t the end of the road. A few options:

  • BBB AUTO LINE. Hyundai participates in this free dispute resolution program (1-800-955-5100). Under Hyundai’s warranty terms, you generally have to use it before filing a lawsuit under the federal Magnuson-Moss Warranty Act, except in Georgia.4Hyundai USA. 2026 Owner’s Handbook and Warranty Information
  • State lemon laws. If the A/C failure keeps recurring and the dealer can’t fix it after a reasonable number of attempts, your state’s lemon law may apply. In California, as of July 2025, consumers must send written notice to Hyundai at least 30 days before filing a civil-penalty action under Civil Code Section 1794(c).4Hyundai USA. 2026 Owner’s Handbook and Warranty Information
  • Goodwill requests. Even after the warranty runs out, it’s worth asking. Hyundai’s own TSBs instruct dealers to submit prior-approval requests for goodwill consideration when a known defect is involved.8NHTSA. TSB 24-HA-003H

Out-of-Warranty Costs and Extended Coverage

Without coverage, A/C work on a Hyundai gets expensive. Replacing an A/C compressor typically runs about $700 to $1,550, depending on the model: roughly $890–$1,006 on a Tucson and $1,251–$1,545 on a Santa Fe.10RepairPal. Hyundai A/C Compressor Replacement Cost Evaporator replacement on a Tucson runs about $1,625–$2,246, with labor accounting for most of the bill because the dashboard usually has to come out.11RepairPal. Hyundai Tucson A/C Evaporator Replacement Cost

Compressors typically fail in the 60,000- to 70,000-mile range, right as the basic warranty is running out. If you want continued protection, Hyundai’s Vehicle Service Contracts can extend mechanical coverage up to 10 years or 100,000 miles. The Gold plan lists climate control as a covered category; the Platinum plan covers all mechanical components except those specifically excluded. Both require enrollment before the vehicle hits 5 years or 60,000 miles, and pricing varies by vehicle, mileage, and location.12Hyundai Protection. Vehicle Protection Plans
