Does Humana Cover Weight Loss Drugs for Seniors? $50 GLP-1 Bridge

Humana’s standard Medicare Advantage and Part D plans do not cover weight loss drugs for seniors when the prescription is written solely for weight loss. That has not changed. What has changed is that starting July 1, 2026, any senior enrolled in a Humana Medicare Advantage plan with drug coverage, or a Humana standalone Part D plan, can get Wegovy, Zepbound, or Foundayo for a flat $50 a month through a new federal program called the Medicare GLP-1 Bridge. Humana itself runs the program for CMS, so the path to coverage goes through Humana either way.

What Humana’s Regular Medicare Plans Cover

Humana’s Part D and Medicare Advantage formularies follow the long-standing Medicare rule that excludes drugs prescribed for weight loss from Part D coverage. GLP-1 medications are covered under those plans only when they are prescribed for a different, medically covered condition.

Specifically, Humana covers drugs like Ozempic and Wegovy when they are prescribed for type 2 diabetes or cardiovascular disease.1Humana. If weight loss is the only reason for the prescription, the regular Humana plan will not pay. That is where the Bridge comes in.

The $50 Medicare GLP-1 Bridge Program

The Medicare GLP-1 Bridge is a federal demonstration program that runs from July 1, 2026, through at least December 31, 2027. It is open nationwide to any Medicare beneficiary enrolled in a standalone Part D plan or a Medicare Advantage plan with prescription drug coverage, which includes Humana members.3CMS. CMS selected Humana to serve as the central processor for the entire Bridge, drawing on the pharmacy claims infrastructure Humana already operates for the Limited Income Newly Eligible Transition (LI NET) program.5Obesity Medicine Association. Which Drugs Are Covered

Three medications are covered under the Bridge when prescribed for weight loss:

  • Wegovy (semaglutide), available as an injection and in tablet form
  • Zepbound (tirzepatide), the KwikPen injection
  • Foundayo (orforglipron), an oral GLP-1 pill approved by the FDA on April 1, 2026, which can be taken at any time of day without food or water restrictions6Eli Lilly. FDA Approves Lilly’s Foundayo (Orforglipron)

If you already get a GLP-1 drug through your Humana plan for a covered condition such as type 2 diabetes, cardiovascular disease, or obstructive sleep apnea, you cannot switch into the Bridge. Those prescriptions continue through your regular Part D benefit.7Medicare.gov. Weight Loss Drugs

Who Qualifies

You must be at least 18, enrolled in a Part D or Medicare Advantage drug plan, and meet one of three BMI-based tiers measured at the time you first started GLP-1 therapy:

  • BMI of 35 or higher, with no additional condition required
  • BMI of 30 or higher, with heart failure with preserved ejection fraction, uncontrolled hypertension despite treatment with two blood-pressure medications, or chronic kidney disease at stage 3a or above
  • BMI of 27 or higher, with pre-diabetes, a prior heart attack, a prior stroke, or symptomatic peripheral artery disease

Your prescriber must submit a prior authorization to Humana’s central processor attesting that you meet these criteria and will combine the medication with structured nutrition and physical activity. The BMI threshold is tied to your status when you first started GLP-1 therapy, even if your BMI has since dropped. Beneficiaries with type 2 diabetes, obstructive sleep apnea, or noncirrhotic MASH are directed to their regular Part D plan instead, because those indications are already coverable there.8CMS. What You Pay

The copay is a flat $50 for a 30-day supply, regardless of which phase of the Part D benefit you are in. Manufacturers supply the drugs to the program at a net price of $245 per month, and the federal government pays the difference.9KFF. A few limits are worth knowing before you plan around it. Because the Bridge sits outside the standard Part D benefit, the $50 does not count toward your Part D deductible, it does not count toward the $2,100 annual out-of-pocket cap, and it cannot be spread out through the Medicare Prescription Payment Plan. The Low-Income Subsidy, or Extra Help, cannot be applied to reduce it.3CMS. Medicare GLP-1 Bridge7Medicare.gov. Weight Loss Drugs

Humana’s Other Weight-Related Benefits

Separate from drug coverage, some Humana Medicare Advantage plans offer supplemental benefits that touch on weight. Members with prediabetes, type 2 diabetes, or a BMI of 30 or higher may qualify for Virta, a nutritional counseling and metabolic health program available at no cost through eligible plans. Virta provides a personalized low-carbohydrate nutrition plan, daily coaching, and clinical monitoring, with the stated goal of reducing or eliminating the need for diabetes medications.10Virta Health. Some plans also offer a Healthy Options Allowance, a monthly spending card for groceries, vitamins, supplements, and other approved health and wellness products. It is most commonly available in Chronic Condition and Dual Eligible Special Needs Plans, starting at $25 a month.11Humana. What Happens After 2027

The Bridge was built as a temporary measure while CMS stood up a more permanent program called the BALANCE Model, under which Part D plans were originally scheduled to begin covering GLP-1s for obesity on January 1, 2027. CMS announced in spring 2026 that the Part D portion of BALANCE has been delayed indefinitely, after private Medicare insurers declined to participate in the voluntary model.4Medicare Rights Center.
