Does HSA Cover a Garmin Watch? Eligibility, Reimbursement, and Timing

Yes, an HSA can cover a Garmin watch, but only through a reimbursement process, not a swipe of your HSA card at checkout. Since October 2025, Garmin has worked with a company called Truemed to let U.S. customers with a qualifying health condition seek reimbursement from their HSA or FSA for select smartwatches, fitness trackers, and cycling products.1Garmin. If everything is approved, using pre-tax dollars works out to roughly 30% off the price.

How the Reimbursement Process Works

You cannot pay directly with your HSA or FSA debit card when buying a Garmin watch. The purchase happens first, the paperwork happens after.2Garmin. How to Get HSA FSA Reimbursement for Garmin Products

  • Buy the eligible Garmin device at Garmin.com with a regular credit or debit card.
  • Complete the Truemed health survey the same day. A link appears on the order confirmation screen and in your confirmation email.
  • Wait for a licensed clinician to review your assessment. If they find the purchase medically necessary, they issue a Letter of Medical Necessity, usually within one to two days.
  • Submit the LMN and the accompanying guide as a claim to your HSA or FSA administrator. Reimbursement typically arrives in two to four weeks.1Garmin. Garmin Teams Up With Truemed to Unlock HSA FSA Funds for Fitness Products

Which Garmin Watches Are Eligible

The program covers the fēnix, Forerunner, Instinct, Lily, Venu, vívoactive, and vívosmart smartwatch and tracker lines. On the cycling side, Tacx trainers and Edge cycling computers also qualify.1Garmin. Prices on eligible watches run from around $500 for the Venu 4 to over $1,200 for higher-end fēnix 8 Pro configurations.4The Run Testers. Best Garmin for Running At roughly 30% effective savings from pre-tax dollars, that’s about $150 to $390 back depending on the model.

One boundary worth knowing: certain Garmin health accessories can be bought directly with an HSA or FSA card at checkout, no Truemed process needed. These include the Index S2 smart scale, the Index BPM blood pressure monitor, the Index Sleep Monitor, and Garmin heart rate monitors such as the HRM 600, HRM-Fit, and HRM 200.5Garmin. Who Actually Qualifies

Wanting to count your steps or improve your running is not enough. Under IRS rules, a medical expense must be “primarily to alleviate or prevent a physical or mental disability or illness,” and expenses “merely beneficial to general health” do not qualify.6IRS. Frequently Asked Questions About Medical Expenses Related to Nutrition, Wellness and General Health

To get through Truemed’s review, the device needs to be tied to a diagnosed or documented condition it will help treat, monitor, or prevent.7Truemed. Eligibility Qualification Overview Conditions that commonly clear that bar include:

  • Cardiovascular conditions such as hypertension, heart disease, and atrial fibrillation
  • Metabolic conditions such as diabetes, prediabetes, insulin resistance, and obesity
  • Sleep disorders including sleep apnea and insomnia
  • Mental health conditions such as anxiety, depression, and chronic stress
  • Musculoskeletal issues including chronic pain, post-surgical recovery, and fall risk monitoring8Truemed. Letter of Medical Necessity Example

The review is not automatic. A licensed clinician looks at each health assessment and can deny the request. Truemed’s own help center says general goals like getting fitter or sleeping better, without an underlying condition, do not meet IRS requirements.7Truemed. Eligibility Qualification Overview

Your Plan Administrator Has the Final Say

An LMN from Truemed is not a guarantee. Your HSA or FSA administrator decides whether to approve the reimbursement, and nothing legally obligates them to honor a third-party LMN. Some administrators scrutinize wearable claims more closely than other medical expenses.9Lifehacker. Use FSA HSA Funds to Get Your Next Smartwatch

Before you buy, call your plan administrator and ask whether they accept a third-party Letter of Medical Necessity for a fitness device. That one call can save you from paying full price and then finding out the claim will not go through. If a claim is denied after the fact, you can contact Truemed support at support@truemed.com, or ask your own primary care physician to write a separate LMN, which administrators are generally more used to seeing.

FSA and HSA Timing Differences

The qualification rules are the same for both account types. The difference is the clock. FSA funds usually expire at the end of the calendar year, so if you have a balance you’ll otherwise lose, the Garmin program can be a way to spend it down.10Garmin. Build in time. The health assessment, LMN issuance, and reimbursement processing together take several weeks, so starting in late December with FSA money about to expire is cutting it close.
