GMC’s written warranty does not cover rental cars. The warranty booklet specifically disclaims liability for “vehicle rental expenses.” What does exist is a separate GM program called Courtesy Transportation, which provides loaner vehicles, third-party rentals, shuttle service, or ride reimbursement while your GMC is in the shop for a qualifying warranty repair. The practical answer to “does GMC warranty cover rental car costs” is yes in effect but no in contract: you can usually get transportation help, but it comes through a program GM can modify or end at any time, and availability depends heavily on the dealer.1NHTSA. GM Service Bulletin 07-00-89-037U
What the Courtesy Transportation Program Covers
The program runs during the standard warranty periods: 3 years or 36,000 miles bumper-to-bumper, 5 years or 60,000 miles powertrain, and 8 years or 100,000 miles for hybrid and EV propulsion components. It also applies to GM Certified Pre-Owned and CarBravo certified used vehicles when they’re in for covered repairs.1NHTSA. GM Service Bulletin 07-00-89-037U
GM’s internal guidelines spell out that Courtesy Transportation is “not part of or included in the coverage provided by the New Vehicle Limited Warranty.” GM reserves the right to change or discontinue it. That’s the legal hedge. In day-to-day practice, participating dealers administer it as a standard benefit.1NHTSA. GM Service Bulletin 07-00-89-037U
Same-Day Repairs
If the work can be completed the same day, GM’s preferred option is shuttle service, reimbursed to the dealer at up to $7.50 each way. When the vehicle is safe to drive, dealers are told to encourage you to take it home and return once parts arrive, rather than issue a loaner.1NHTSA. GM Service Bulletin 07-00-89-037U
Overnight Repairs: Loaners First
When your GMC has to stay overnight, the dealer should pull a vehicle from its own loaner fleet. The loaner is supposed to match your vehicle’s brand and segment, so a GMC SUV owner gets a GMC SUV or a comparable GM equivalent. If the dealer lacks an exact match, it should move you up a class rather than down. Loaner vehicles must be no older than two model years to qualify for GM reimbursement to the dealer.1NHTSA. GM Service Bulletin 07-00-89-037U
Third-Party Rentals
If no in-house loaner is available, the dealer can set you up at a rental agency. GM reimburses the dealer up to $44 per day for a GM-branded rental, or $47 per day for Cadillac customers in a Cadillac. High-cost cities add $5 per day (Boston, Chicago, Washington D.C., Los Angeles, Philadelphia) or $10 per day (San Francisco, Hawaii, parts of New York City). As of January 2025, non-GM branded rental vehicles are no longer reimbursable at all under the updated dealer guidelines.1NHTSA. GM Service Bulletin 07-00-89-037U2JL Warranty. Ride-Hailing, Transit, and Gas Money
When nothing on wheels is available from the dealer and your car has to stay overnight, GM will reimburse Uber, Lyft, or public transit at up to $38 per day, capped at $114 total. If a friend or family member drives you around, GM will cover fuel at up to $15 per day, capped at $45.1NHTSA. GM Service Bulletin 07-00-89-037U
What You Still Pay For
Even with a loaner or rental in your hand, several costs are yours:
- Fuel. You return the vehicle with a full tank.
- Insurance. Collision damage waivers and any optional coverage you accept at the rental counter.
- Taxes, airport surcharges, and licensing fees.
- Add-ons like satellite radio, navigation upgrades, or child seats.
Several repair categories also fall outside the program entirely: corrosion warranty work, non-federal emissions warranties, customer-pay maintenance, and goodwill or “policy” repairs made outside the warranty terms. If your repair is one of these, courtesy transportation does not apply.1NHTSA. GM Service Bulletin 07-00-89-037U
How Long You Can Keep It
Three calendar days is the baseline cap when the dealer is waiting on locally sourced parts. Five days applies when parts are express-shipped. Beyond seven days, the dealer must get GM authorization through its internal warranty system, and as of June 2025 that threshold tightened: claims for six or more rental days now require GM approval. Once the warranty repair is finished, further use of the loaner is on you.1NHTSA. GM Service Bulletin 07-00-89-037U2JL Warranty. GM Courtesy Transportation Updates
Why Availability Varies by Dealer
GMC’s warranty page states plainly that “rental/loaner cars vary by dealer.” GM’s internal bulletin adds that for non-Cadillac customers, loaners are “vetted on a case-by-case basis and not guaranteed for qualification.” Cadillac owners get preferential treatment, including same-day loaner eligibility. GMC, Chevrolet, and Buick owners face tighter restrictions on same-day loaners.3GMC. Warranty and Protection1NHTSA. GM Service Bulletin 07-00-89-037U
Some dealers maintain large loaner fleets and hand you keys without discussion. Others have nothing available and will offer a shuttle instead. Call before you schedule and ask what the dealer can provide for your specific repair.
Arranging It Step by Step
- When you book the service appointment, say you’ll need alternate transportation and ask what the dealer will provide.
- Let the dealer diagnose the vehicle. The repair has to be confirmed as warranty-covered before courtesy transportation attaches. If it turns into a customer-pay job, the program doesn’t apply.
- If you’re given a loaner or placed in a third-party rental, you’ll sign a rental agreement. Keep a copy. Fuel, insurance, and extras are yours.
- If nothing is available and you use rideshare or transit, save every original receipt and give them to the dealer for reimbursement.
GM does not pay customers directly. Money flows from GM to the dealer, and the dealer handles rentals or reimburses you. The dealer needs the rental agreement showing start and end dates, the VIN, and your contact details, or original receipts attached to the repair order for rideshare and transit.1NHTSA. If a Dealer Says No
Start with the service manager, then the general manager or dealer owner. If that doesn’t move the needle, call the GMC Customer Assistance Center at 1-800-462-8782. Have your VIN, dealer name and location, service date, and current mileage on hand.3GMC. Recalls Are a Separate Question
If your GMC is in for a recall and still under its factory warranty, Courtesy Transportation applies normally. If the vehicle is outside warranty and in for a recall, there is no blanket policy. Some recall bulletins include transportation provisions; others don’t. When a bulletin is silent, the dealer can request pre-approval from GM on a case-by-case basis through its internal portal. A 2018 U.S. Senate staff report found that GM did not require dealers to provide loaners for the Takata airbag recalls, leaving the decision to dealer discretion.5NHTSA. If You Bought a GMC Protection Plan or CarBravo Vehicle
The extended GMC Protection Plan, sold through dealers, treats rental coverage differently than the factory program: it’s a written contract benefit, not a courtesy. All three tiers (Platinum, Silver, Powertrain) reimburse up to $40 per day for up to 10 days during a covered breakdown. Fuel, collision damage waivers, and optional insurance are excluded, and the claims team must authorize the rental in advance.7GMC. GMC Protection Plan8GM Financial. GM Protection Benefits
The Protection Plan also includes a Trip Interruption benefit for breakdowns more than 100 miles from home that require an overnight stay: up to $200 per day for lodging, meals, ground transportation, and rental, capped at $1,000 total. Claims go to Safe-Guard Products International within 30 days, with all paid receipts and your customer agreement.9MyGMCProtection. How to File a Claim
CarBravo certified used vehicles carry the same $40-per-day, 10-day rental benefit for covered mechanical breakdowns, with availability subject to vehicle stock at the dealer.10CarBravo. CarBravo Warranty Booklet
Repeat Repairs and Lemon Law Rentals
If your GMC keeps coming back for the same unresolved defect, state lemon laws may give you a stronger claim to rental reimbursement than the Courtesy Transportation Program alone. The rules vary. Michigan’s lemon law requires the manufacturer to pay “reasonable costs for a comparable rental vehicle” caused by the defect.11Michigan.gov. Lemon Law New York’s lemon law excludes “loss of use” expenses from the refund calculation.12New York Attorney General. New Car Lemon Law Guide In California, rental costs may be recoverable as consequential damages through the state’s third-party dispute resolution process.13CarLemon. California Lemon Law Texas does not mandate a rental during warranty repairs, though providing one can pause the 30-day repair clock in the manufacturer’s favor.14Texas DMV. Lemon Law
Federally, the Magnuson-Moss Warranty Act does not require rental cars during repairs, but it does allow consumers to recover “reasonable incidental expenses” when a warrantor fails to repair within a reasonable time or imposes unreasonable duties on the consumer. Whether a particular rental bill qualifies depends on the facts and on whether a court finds the delay unreasonable.15Office of the Law Revision Counsel. Magnuson-Moss Warranty Act, 15 U.S.C. § 2304
