Does FSA Cover Peloton Membership? The Truemed and LMN Route

A Peloton membership is not automatically covered by a Flexible Spending Account, but FSA funds can pay for it in one specific situation: a licensed healthcare provider determines the membership is medically necessary to treat a diagnosed condition, issues a Letter of Medical Necessity, and your FSA administrator approves the reimbursement claim. Without that medical link, the monthly subscription comes out of your after-tax money.

Why Fitness Subscriptions Are Not FSA-Eligible by Default

The IRS treats general fitness spending and medical spending as separate categories. Under Section 213 of the Internal Revenue Code, an expense qualifies for FSA reimbursement only if it is “primarily to alleviate or prevent a physical or mental disability or illness.” Costs “merely beneficial to general health” do not qualify.1IRS. Frequently Asked Questions About Medical Expenses Related to Nutrition, Wellness, and General Health A gym membership, fitness class, or digital workout subscription bought to stay in shape does not qualify, even when a doctor recommends exercise in general terms.2Fidelity. HSA and FSA Eligible Expenses

FSAFEDS, the program that administers FSAs for federal employees, applies the same standard. It lists “exercise equipment or program (as treatment for a medical condition)” as eligible only with a Letter of Medical Necessity signed by a doctor and a detailed receipt.3FSAFEDS. The Medical Necessity Exception

The one route to FSA eligibility runs through medical necessity. The IRS allows a gym membership or fitness program as a medical expense when it is purchased “for the sole purpose of treating a specific disease diagnosed by a physician (such as obesity, hypertension, or heart disease).”1IRS. Frequently Asked Questions About Medical Expenses Related to Nutrition, Wellness, and General Health The phrase “sole purpose” matters. A membership that also serves general fitness goals does not meet the standard.

The paperwork that documents this is a Letter of Medical Necessity, or LMN. It is a formal document from a licensed provider that must include the patient’s diagnosis with an ICD-10 code, a clinical justification connecting the diagnosis to the specific service, and the provider’s credentials and signature.4Truemed. Letter of Medical Necessity Example Generic wording about improving health is not enough. The letter has to draw a direct line from the condition to the Peloton membership as a treatment.

How the Peloton and Truemed Pathway Works for the Membership

Peloton has partnered with Truemed, a platform that connects consumers with licensed providers who evaluate whether a purchase qualifies as medically necessary. For the monthly All-Access Membership, this pathway does not include a direct-pay option. You cannot charge the subscription to an FSA card through Peloton’s checkout.5Peloton. Truemed

Instead, you complete a Truemed health survey, and a licensed provider reviews it. If you qualify, the provider issues an LMN. Peloton states that with that letter in hand, “you may be able to apply your HSA/FSA funds to the cost of a Peloton Membership while the LMN is valid.”5Peloton. Truemed The process is pay-first, reimburse-later: your card is charged for the membership each month, and you file with your FSA administrator to get the money back.

The hardware works differently. Peloton’s Bike, Bike+, Tread, Tread+, and Row can be purchased directly with an HSA or FSA card through the Truemed checkout integration if you qualify after the survey. Peloton rentals and return shipping fees are not HSA/FSA eligible at all.5Peloton. Truemed

Filing a Monthly Reimbursement Claim

Once you have an LMN, each monthly charge needs its own claim. Truemed’s guidance lists two items per submission: the LMN, which is reusable for qualifying purchases within its 12-month validity window, and a receipt for the specific monthly charge showing the amount, merchant name, and transaction date. Claims go through your administrator’s online portal and typically process in seven to ten business days.6Truemed. How to Submit Your HSA/FSA Reimbursement

Timing matters. FSAFEDS notes that IRS rules prohibit reimbursement for expenses that will be incurred in the future, so a claim has to be filed after the month of service has ended, not before.7FSAFEDS. Frequently Asked Questions

An LMN Does Not Guarantee Approval

Having an LMN is necessary, but it is not sufficient. Peloton’s own site states that “reimbursement eligibility is determined by the HSA/FSA administrator and is not guaranteed” and that specifics “can vary based on individual plans and providers.”5Peloton. Truemed Truemed similarly notes that while it issues the letter, the administrator has final authority.8Truemed. Eligibility and Qualification Overview

Denials happen for a few common reasons. The administrator may treat the expense as general wellness rather than treatment for the diagnosed condition. The LMN may lack sufficient clinical detail or fail to link the diagnosis clearly to the specific service. Documentation errors, such as a letter dated after the purchase or missing fields, also lead to rejection. If your claim is denied, you can request a formal explanation and appeal, usually by submitting additional supporting documentation from your provider.9GoodRx. Medical Letter of Necessity

What Kinds of Conditions Might Qualify

Eligibility depends on a diagnosed condition for which a provider considers structured exercise a necessary treatment. The IRS names obesity, hypertension, and heart disease as examples where a gym membership could qualify.1IRS. Frequently Asked Questions About Medical Expenses Related to Nutrition, Wellness, and General Health Truemed’s qualification process flags cardiovascular disease and metabolic conditions as situations that may qualify for fitness equipment or memberships, and musculoskeletal issues or chronic pain as situations that may qualify for recovery-oriented tools.8Truemed. Eligibility and Qualification Overview

General wellness goals fall outside the rule. Wanting to get in better shape, feel less stressed, or improve overall fitness is not a diagnosed condition, and the LMN process screens for that distinction: the reason must be tied to a documented health condition, not preference.8Truemed. The PHIT Act Has Not Changed This

Legislation has been proposed that would make fitness spending broadly FSA-eligible. The Personal Health Investment Today (PHIT) Act would allow individuals to use up to $500 per year, or $1,000 for families, in pre-tax funds for physical activity expenses such as gym memberships, fitness classes, and youth sports fees.10Health and Fitness Association.
