Does FanDuel Report Winnings to the IRS? W-2G, Withholding, and Losses

Yes. FanDuel does report winnings to the IRS, but only when a payout crosses a federal reporting threshold tied to the type of bet. For 2026, that threshold is generally $2,000, up from $600, under a new inflation-adjustment provision that took effect for payments made after 2025.1Internal Revenue Service. Instructions for Forms W-2G and 5754 (01/2026) Whether or not FanDuel files a form on a given payout, every dollar you win is taxable income you’re responsible for reporting.

When FanDuel Files a W-2G

FanDuel files Form W-2G with the IRS, and sends you a copy, whenever a single payout meets the federal reporting rules for that type of wager. The thresholds sit at the individual-payout level, not your yearly total. Winning $500 on four separate bets doesn’t produce a W-2G, even though you netted $2,000 across them.

For 2026, the triggers by gambling type are:

  • Sports betting and parimutuel wagers (like horse racing): $2,000 or more in winnings and a payout of at least 300 times the wager. Both conditions must be met.1Internal Revenue Service. Instructions for Forms W-2G and 5754 (01/2026)
  • Slots and bingo: $2,000 or more, no odds requirement.
  • Keno: $2,000 or more, after subtracting the cost of the wager.
  • Poker tournaments: $2,000 or more, after subtracting the buy-in.

That 300-to-1 ratio is why routine sports betting almost never generates a form. A $10 bet would need to pay out $3,000 or more before FanDuel has any obligation to report it. Most parlays and straight bets settle well below that line.

Daily Fantasy and Picks

Daily fantasy sports work differently. FanDuel issues a Form 1099-MISC when your annual net profit from DFS and Picks products reaches $600 or more.2FanDuel. Taxes with FanDuel Fantasy and FanDuel Picks The 1099-MISC reflects your aggregate results for the year, not any single contest. A DFS payout that also happens to meet the W-2G criteria is reported on the W-2G instead.

Online Table Games

If you play blackjack, roulette, or baccarat in FanDuel’s online casino, those table games are generally exempt from automatic W-2G reporting. You still owe tax on any winnings, but no form is generated the way it would be for a qualifying slot jackpot. Your own records become the only record.

Reporting Is Not the Same as Withholding

A W-2G means FanDuel told the IRS about the payout. It doesn’t necessarily mean any tax was taken out. Mandatory federal withholding kicks in at a higher bar: net winnings above $5,000 and a payout of at least 300 times the wager for most bet types.3Office of the Law Revision Counsel. 26 USC 3402 – Income Tax Collected at Source When both conditions are met, FanDuel withholds 24% and sends it to the IRS.

A separate rule applies if you never gave FanDuel a valid taxpayer identification number. In that case, backup withholding of 24% applies to any reportable payout, regardless of amount.4Internal Revenue Service. Backup Withholding Anything withheld shows up on your W-2G and counts as a credit when you file.

Withholding is a prepayment, not a settlement. If your overall bracket is higher than 24%, you’ll owe more at filing. If it’s lower, you’ll get some back.

You Owe Tax Even Without a Form

The IRS position is clear: all gambling winnings are fully taxable and must appear on your return.5Internal Revenue Service. Topic No. 419, Gambling Income and Losses The W-2G is a reporting convenience for the IRS. It is not what creates your tax obligation.

Gambling income goes on Schedule 1 of Form 1040 under “Other income.”6Internal Revenue Service. Form W-2G (Rev. January 2026) That includes every winning sports bet, casino session, and DFS contest, whether the payout was $20 or $20,000. Someone who wins $100 on twenty-five separate bets over the year has $2,500 in taxable gambling income even if no form is ever generated.

To report accurately when you haven’t received forms, keep a contemporaneous log: the date of each wager, the type of bet, the amount won or lost, and the platform. FanDuel’s transaction history is a solid starting point, but your own records back it up and make year-end totals easier.

What Happens If You Skip the Unreported Winnings

FanDuel files every W-2G and 1099 electronically. The IRS feeds those forms into its Automated Underreporter system, which matches income reported by payers against what appears on your return. A W-2G with no corresponding entry on your Schedule 1 flags the account.

The usual result is a CP2000 notice, which arrives 12 to 18 months after filing and proposes additional tax based on the unreported winnings. There’s a catch worth understanding. The IRS system only sees the winning side. It doesn’t know about your losses. So the proposed bill often overstates the actual tax you owe. You generally have 30 days to respond with documentation of offsetting losses, and substantiated losses can reduce or eliminate the assessment.

Ignoring the notice is where it gets expensive. The IRS will assess the full proposed amount plus interest and possibly accuracy-related penalties. The underpayment interest rate for early 2026 is 7%.7Internal Revenue Service. Interest Rates Remain the Same for the First Quarter of 2026

Offsetting Winnings With Losses

You can deduct gambling losses, but three constraints matter:

  • Losses can only reduce gambling income to zero. They can’t shelter wages, investment income, or anything else.
  • Starting in 2026, only 90% of your gambling losses are deductible, not the full amount. This cap was enacted as part of the One Big Beautiful Bill Act, signed in mid-2025.8Office of the Law Revision Counsel. 26 USC 165 – Losses
  • Gambling losses are an itemized deduction on Schedule A. You have to give up the standard deduction to claim them.5Internal Revenue Service. Topic No. 419, Gambling Income and Losses

The 90% cap changes the math when your losses are close to your winnings. Say you won $15,000 and lost $14,000 on FanDuel during 2026. You can deduct only $12,600 (90% of $14,000), leaving $2,400 in taxable gambling income even though your actual net profit was $1,000.8Office of the Law Revision Counsel. 26 USC 165 – Losses Leftover losses cannot be carried into future years.

The IRS will disallow loss deductions you can’t substantiate. Records need to show the date, type, amount, and platform for each wager. Bank statements and the FanDuel transaction log corroborate your own log, but the burden of proof sits with you.

State Taxes Are a Separate Bill

Federal reporting isn’t the whole story. Most states with an income tax also tax gambling winnings, and some require FanDuel to withhold state tax on top of the federal amount. State withholding rates range from roughly 1% to over 10%. Most states follow the federal $5,000 withholding threshold, though some set their own lower triggers. A few states don’t allow any deduction for gambling losses on the state return, so you can end up owing state tax on gross winnings with no offset. Your state’s rules can materially change what you keep.
