Does FAFSA Ask for Parents’ Income? Income, Assets, and Exceptions

Yes, the FAFSA does ask for parents’ income if you are classified as a dependent student, and most undergraduates under 24 are dependent under federal rules regardless of whether their parents actually help pay for school. The dependency test is set by federal law, and your financial aid office cannot waive it just because your parents are uninvolved or refuse to contribute. If none of the independence criteria apply to you, parental income and asset data must be on the form before the system will produce a Student Aid Index.

Who Counts as a Dependent Student

You are classified as independent for the 2026–2027 award year, and therefore do not need to report parent information, if at least one of the following applies:

  • You are 24 or older by December 31, 2026.
  • You are married and not separated.
  • You are enrolled in a master’s or doctoral program.
  • You are a veteran or currently serving on active duty for purposes other than training.
  • At any time since you turned 13, you were an orphan, a ward of the court, or in foster care.
  • You were legally emancipated or placed in a legal guardianship by a court before turning 18.
  • You have children or other dependents who receive more than half their support from you.
  • You are an unaccompanied homeless youth or at risk of homelessness and self-supporting.

These criteria come directly from the Higher Education Act.1Office of the Law Revision Counsel. 20 USC 1087vv – Definitions If none of them describes you, you are dependent, and the FAFSA will require parent data.

One point that catches people out: a student who is separated from a spouse is treated as unmarried for FAFSA purposes starting with the 2024–2025 award year, and reverts to dependent status unless another criterion applies.2FSA Partner Portal. Which Parent Has To Report

If your parents are married and living together, both of them report their combined finances. When parents are divorced, separated, or were never married, the reporting parent is the one who provided the greater share of your financial support over the prior 12 months. That replaced the older rule based on which parent you lived with most.2FSA Partner Portal. FAFSA Simplification Act Changes for Implementation 2024-25 If support was equal, the parent with the higher income and assets reports. If the reporting parent has remarried, the stepparent’s income and assets get included too.

Federal rules define a parent, for FAFSA purposes, as a biological parent, an adoptive parent, or a stepparent currently married to the reporting parent. Grandparents, aunts, uncles, and foster parents do not count unless they have legally adopted you. A legal guardian is not treated as a parent either, even when they fully support you.

What Parents Report on the Form

Income

The FAFSA uses tax data from two years before the award year starts. For the 2026–2027 application, that means parents’ 2024 federal return.3FSA Partner Portal. 2026-2027 Award Year FAFSA Information To Be Verified and Acceptable Documentation The main figure is adjusted gross income from line 11 of Form 1040. Beyond AGI, the form captures items that do not appear there, including tax-exempt interest and the untaxed portion of IRA distributions.4FSA Handbook. Chapter 2 – Filling Out the FAFSA Form

Most of this data now transfers directly from the IRS through the FUTURE Act Direct Data Exchange, so parents usually do not type income figures in by hand. When the transfer succeeds, those numbers are treated as verified and the school does not have to ask for further documentation.3FSA Partner Portal. 2026-2027 Award Year FAFSA Information To Be Verified and Acceptable Documentation

Assets

Parents also report the current value of certain assets:

  • Combined balances of checking and savings accounts.
  • Investments, including stocks, bonds, mutual funds, 529 plans, and real estate other than the family’s primary home.
  • Net worth of a family business or farm. For 2026–2027, a family-owned business with 100 or fewer full-time or full-time-equivalent employees is excluded.5Federal Student Aid. 2026-27 FAFSA Form and Pell Grant Eligibility Updates

Several common assets are not reported. The family’s primary residence is excluded, as are retirement accounts such as 401(k) plans, pensions, annuities, and IRAs.6Federal Student Aid. Current Net Worth of Investments, Including Real Estate Life insurance policies are also excluded.

Under the FAFSA Simplification Act, child support received is now reported as an asset rather than as untaxed income. The parent who received it reports the total from the last complete calendar year.7U.S. Department of Education. If You Can’t Get Parent Information

Unusual Circumstances

Federal law offers a narrow path for dependent students who genuinely cannot obtain parent data. Circumstances that can qualify include parental abandonment, estrangement, incarceration, human trafficking, or refugee or asylum status. You indicate on the FAFSA that unusual circumstances prevent you from including parent information, and the system assigns you provisional independent status and a provisional SAI while your school reviews the situation.8FSA Partners. Chapter 5 Special Cases

The financial aid office will ask for supporting documentation. That can include court orders, a statement from a social worker or welfare agency, documentation from a TRIO or GEAR UP program representative, or utility bills and other records showing you live independently from your parents.9Federal Student Aid Handbook. Special Cases The aid administrator makes the final call on whether to grant a full dependency override.

If Your Parents Just Refuse

Parents being reachable but unwilling to file the FAFSA is not grounds for a dependency override. In that case, your financial aid office can document the refusal and let you take out a Federal Direct Unsubsidized Loan at the dependent student borrowing limit.8FSA Partners. Chapter 5 Special Cases You would not qualify for Pell Grants, subsidized loans, or other need-based aid, because no SAI can be calculated without parent data.

If Parent Income Has Dropped Since the Tax Year

Because the FAFSA pulls tax data from two years back, the numbers on your form may not reflect where your family stands now. If a parent has lost a job, divorced, died, or lost benefits since the reported tax year, you can ask your school’s financial aid office for a professional judgment review. Under Section 479A of the Higher Education Act, aid administrators can adjust the data on a case-by-case basis when documented special circumstances warrant it.

To request one, contact the aid office directly. Expect to provide documentation such as a termination letter, unemployment records, a death certificate, or a divorce decree, together with an estimate of current-year income. Consumer debt like credit card balances or car payments generally will not qualify as a basis for adjustment. Each school handles these reviews independently, and a professional judgment decision cannot be appealed to the Department of Education.
