Does Etsy Send You a Tax Form? 1099-K Rules and Deductions

Etsy does send you a tax form, but only if your shop crosses specific thresholds. For the federal 1099-K, you need more than $20,000 in gross payments and more than 200 transactions in the same calendar year. A handful of states set much lower floors, so you could get a state-level 1099-K on far smaller sales. And here’s the part that catches people: whether or not a form arrives, you still owe tax on every dollar of profit your shop earns.

When Etsy Issues a Federal 1099-K

Etsy is a third-party settlement organization under Internal Revenue Code Section 6050W, which is what obligates it to report seller payments to the IRS.1Office of the Law Revision Counsel. 26 USC 6050W – Returns Relating to Payments Made in Settlement of Payment Card and Third Party Network Transactions In 2025, Congress permanently restored the original reporting threshold through the One, Big, Beautiful Bill Act, ending years of uncertainty over a proposed $600 rule.2Internal Revenue Service. Both conditions have to be true. If you took in $25,000 across 150 transactions, no federal form. If you had 300 sales but only $15,000 in gross payments, still no federal form.3eCFR. 26 CFR 1.6050W-1 – Information Reporting for Payments Made in Settlement of Payment Card and Third Party Network Transactions

State Thresholds Are Often Much Lower

Maryland, Massachusetts, Vermont, and Virginia require reporting at $600 with no transaction minimum. New Jersey uses $1,000. If you sell from one of those states, Etsy may issue a state 1099-K even when your sales look nowhere near the federal trigger. Check your state’s department of revenue for the number that applies to you.

Running More Than One Shop

If you operate multiple shops under the same Social Security Number or Employer Identification Number, Etsy combines the sales across all of them when checking against the thresholds.4Etsy Help Center. What the Form Actually Says

The number on the 1099-K is your gross payment volume. It includes the item price, shipping paid by buyers, and even amounts you later refunded. It does not subtract Etsy’s fees, advertising, or any of your costs.5IRS. Instructions for Form 1099-K

One thing the form excludes: sales tax that Etsy collected directly from buyers as a marketplace facilitator. Etsy remits that money to the state without it ever passing through your account, so it doesn’t show up in the total.6Etsy Help Center. How Is the Total on My 1099-K Calculated

The gap between the reported figure and your real profit is usually large. A shop with $22,000 in gross payments might have spent $8,000 on materials, $2,500 on Etsy fees, $1,200 on shipping supplies, and issued $1,500 in refunds. The form still says $22,000. You reconcile the difference on your return.

You Owe Taxes Even Without a Form

This is the single biggest misunderstanding among Etsy sellers. The 1099-K is an information return that helps the IRS match reported income to filers. It is not what creates your tax obligation. The IRS is direct on this point: all income from your shop must be reported whether or not a platform issues you a form.7Internal Revenue Service. Understanding Your Form 1099-K

Once your net earnings from self-employment reach $400 in a year, you must file a return and pay self-employment tax. That tax covers Social Security and Medicare and runs 15.3% of your net profit, on top of regular income tax.8Internal Revenue Service. Self-Employment Tax (Social Security and Medicare Taxes) A seller with $8,000 in net profit and no 1099-K still owes income tax plus roughly $1,224 in self-employment tax.

Deductions That Shrink the Gross Number

Etsy sellers report income and expenses on Schedule C (Form 1040), where you subtract legitimate business costs from the gross figure to get to actual taxable profit.9Internal Revenue Service. Instructions for Schedule C (Form 1040) Common deductions for a typical shop include:

  • Materials and supplies: raw materials, packaging, and labels.
  • Platform fees: Etsy listing, transaction, payment processing, and advertising charges, reported on the “Commissions and fees” line.
  • Shipping: postage, shipping supplies, and carrier charges you paid.
  • Home office: a portion of rent, utilities, and insurance for a dedicated workspace, using either actual expenses or the simplified method at $5 per square foot up to 300 square feet.
  • Vehicle mileage: trips to the post office, supply store, or craft fairs, deductible at actual cost or the standard rate of 72.5 cents per mile for 2026.
  • Professional services: accounting or tax preparation fees for the business.
  • Equipment depreciation: cameras, printers, sewing machines, and other tools that last longer than one year.

A seller with $22,000 in gross payments and $12,000 in legitimate expenses owes tax on $10,000, not $22,000. Track expenses as you go. Reconstructing a year of receipts in March is where sellers overpay or leave real money on the table.

Quarterly Estimated Payments

Etsy doesn’t withhold income or self-employment tax from your sales. If you expect to owe $1,000 or more when you file, the IRS generally requires quarterly estimated payments during the year.10Internal Revenue Service. Estimated Taxes The 2026 deadlines are April 15, June 15, September 15, and January 15, 2027.

You avoid the underpayment penalty by paying at least 90% of your current year’s tax or 100% of last year’s tax (110% if your adjusted gross income exceeded $150,000).11Internal Revenue Service. Underpayment of Estimated Tax by Individuals Penalty A common approach is to move 25% to 30% of each month’s net profit into a separate account and pay from there.

Getting Your Form From Etsy

Etsy has to furnish 1099-Ks by January 31 of the following year.12Internal Revenue Service. Form 1099-K FAQs – Third Party Filers of Form 1099-K Electronic copies usually appear in Shop Manager during the last couple of weeks of January under Finances, then Legal and Tax Information. Paper copies take a bit longer to arrive by mail. The mobile app does not give full access to tax documents, so use a desktop browser.4Etsy Help Center. Etsy also needs a correct taxpayer identification number (SSN, ITIN, or EIN) on file. A missing or mismatched number can trigger backup withholding at 24% of your gross payments, which you eventually recover on your return but which locks up serious cash in the meantime.13Internal Revenue Service. If the Form Is Missing

If mid-February passes with no form, contact Etsy through the help portal and verify your address and email are current. If nothing arrives by the end of February, you can call the IRS at 800-829-1040 and they will reach out to Etsy on your behalf.14Internal Revenue Service. What to Do When a W-2 or Form 1099 Is Missing or Incorrect Don’t let a missing form delay your return; you can file from your own Etsy dashboard records and reconcile if a corrected form shows up later.

If the Form Is Wrong

Only Etsy can correct a 1099-K it issued. Contact Etsy for a corrected form; the IRS cannot fix it for you.15Internal Revenue Service. Form 1099-K FAQs – What to Do if You Receive a Form 1099-K If you can’t get a correction before filing, report the incorrect amount on Schedule 1 (Form 1040), Line 8z as “Form 1099-K received in error,” then enter an identical offsetting adjustment on Line 24z. The two cancel out, keeping your adjusted gross income clean.

What Happens If You Don’t Report

The IRS gets its own copy of every 1099-K, and its matching system flags returns where the income doesn’t show up. The accuracy-related penalty for negligence is 20% of the underpaid tax, plus interest that keeps running until the balance is cleared.16Internal Revenue Service. Accuracy-Related Penalty Skipping quarterly payments adds a separate underpayment penalty on top. A strong sales year followed by a silent April is how sellers end up with tax bills that dwarf what they actually owed on the profit itself.
