How To Read the Panel in the Store

Turn the package over and find the bordered box near the ingredients. If the header says “Nutrition Facts,” it is EBT-eligible. If it says “Supplement Facts,” it is not. Two powders with nearly identical ingredients can end up on opposite sides of this line. Products sold in small doses with daily-intake instructions tend to be classified as supplements.

Electrolyte Powders That Are EBT-Eligible

Amazon marks eligible products with a “SNAP EBT eligible” tag near the product name, but only items shipped and sold by Amazon.com, Amazon Fresh, or fulfilled by Whole Foods Market qualify. Third-party seller listings generally do not.11Amazon. SNAP EBT on Amazon

When an Electrolyte Powder Is Not Eligible

A powder with a Supplement Facts panel cannot be bought with SNAP, period. This is common for products positioned as fitness or health supplements. The FDA’s labeling guide notes that electrolytes like sodium, potassium, and chloride must be grouped with vitamins and minerals on a Supplement Facts panel when the product is classified as a dietary supplement.12U.S. Food and Drug Administration. The National Council on Aging makes the same point about sports and energy drinks: those with only a Supplement Facts label are ineligible, while those with a Nutrition Facts label can meet SNAP guidelines.13National Council on Aging. State Waivers That Add a Second Filter in 2026

Starting in 2026, more than a dozen states have USDA-approved “healthy food” waivers that restrict SNAP purchases of sweetened beverages, candy, and in some cases sports drinks.15USDA Food and Nutrition Service. Under Texas Senate Bill 379, effective April 1, 2026, SNAP benefits in Texas cannot be used for nonalcoholic beverages with five or more grams of added sugar per serving or any amount of artificial sweetener. The law carves out an exception for “medical-grade electrolyte drinks used to treat dehydration,” so long as they are not labeled as sports drinks.16Texas Health and Human Services. Indiana’s “Smart SNAP” program, effective January 1, 2026, restricts sports and energy drinks as “sugary drinks,” defined as non-alcoholic beverages containing natural or artificial sweeteners.18Indiana Family and Social Services Administration. Smart SNAP Colorado’s pending waiver restricts ready-to-drink sweetened sports and electrolyte drinks but specifically allows “electrolyte or other drink packets that you mix yourself.”19Colorado Department of Human Services. Other states with waivers in various stages include Arkansas, Florida, Montana, Nebraska, North Dakota, Ohio, South Carolina, Tennessee, Virginia, Wyoming, and Nevada. Quick Checks Before You Buy

  • Read the facts panel. Nutrition Facts is eligible. Supplement Facts is not.
  • Shop where items are tagged. Walmart and Amazon flag SNAP-eligible products in their listings, letting you filter before checkout.
  • Know your state’s rules. In a state with a healthy food waiver, some sweetened sports drinks may be blocked even with a Nutrition Facts label. Unsweetened or low-sugar powders you mix at home are generally not affected.
