DoorDash does not pay for tolls. Bridge fees, tunnel charges, and express-lane costs all come out of the Dasher’s pocket, because DoorDash treats its drivers as independent contractors and puts vehicle-related costs on them.1DoorDash. DoorDash Statement on the Department of Labor’s Final Worker Classification Rule There is no expense portal, no receipt upload, and no way to request a toll refund after a delivery. What you can do is deduct tolls at tax time and be selective about which offers you accept.
What Contractor Status Means for Toll Costs
Because Dashers are contractors, tolls sit in the same bucket as gas, insurance, and maintenance: your business, your cost. Every toll you hit during a shift reduces your take-home pay dollar for dollar. A $5 toll on a $9 delivery cuts your effective earnings nearly in half before you account for fuel and wear on your car.
How Tolls Change the Math on an Offer
DoorDash base pay for each delivery ranges from $2 to $10 or more, calculated on estimated time, distance, and desirability.2DoorDash. How Dasher Pay Works The offer screen does not break out a line for tolls, and DoorDash has never said toll routes specifically bump base pay. You have roughly 30 seconds to decide.
So the mental math is on you. If the route crosses a $6 bridge and the offer pays $8, that’s $2 before gas. Dashers in toll-heavy metros often decline any offer that requires a toll unless the payout leaves a real margin after the crossing.
Deducting Tolls on Your Taxes
Federal tax law lets you deduct ordinary and necessary business expenses, and tolls paid during active deliveries qualify.3Office of the Law Revision Counsel. 26 USC 162 – Trade or Business Expenses You report them on Schedule C (Form 1040), Line 9, under car and truck expenses.4Internal Revenue Service. Instructions for Schedule C (Form 1040)
Here is the part most Dashers miss. Tolls are deductible on top of the standard mileage rate. The IRS specifically allows business parking fees and tolls to be claimed in addition to per-mile deductions.5Internal Revenue Service. Publication 463 (2025), Travel, Gift, and Car Expenses For 2026, the standard mileage rate is 72.5 cents per mile.6Internal Revenue Service. 2026 Standard Mileage Rates Drive 100 miles on deliveries and pay $12 in tolls, and you deduct $72.50 plus $12. Leaving tolls off the return means paying tax on money that was never really yours.
You can instead deduct actual car expenses, meaning the business share of gas, insurance, repairs, depreciation, and tolls. Most Dashers find standard mileage plus tolls simpler and often more generous, but running both calculations at tax time is worth the few minutes.
What the Deduction Saves You
Toll deductions lower your net profit on Schedule C, which reduces both income tax and self-employment tax. The self-employment tax rate is 15.3%, covering Social Security at 12.4% and Medicare at 2.9%.7Internal Revenue Service. Self-Employment Tax (Social Security and Medicare Taxes) Deducting $600 in tolls over a year saves about $92 in self-employment tax alone, before income tax.
Business Tolls Only
A toll on the way to a pickup or drop-off is a business expense. A toll paid on the way to your favorite dashing zone before you accept anything is commuting, and commuting is not deductible. The rule tracks the same clock as mileage: the business purpose starts when you accept a delivery and ends when it’s complete, unless another delivery keeps it running. The IRS looks at this distinction closely for gig workers, so keep it clean.
Records That Hold Up in an Audit
The IRS wants four things for each toll: the amount, the date, the business purpose, and the destination.5Internal Revenue Service. Publication 463 (2025), Travel, Gift, and Car Expenses Estimates don’t work. A toll transponder account is the easiest fix because it prints itemized statements with date, location, and charge for every crossing.
Receipts are not required for non-lodging expenses under $75, and nearly every toll falls under that.5Internal Revenue Service. Publication 463 (2025), Travel, Gift, and Car Expenses You still need a written log of amount, date, and business purpose. A spreadsheet or notes app is enough. Cross-reference your transponder statement against your DoorDash delivery history: a toll at 12:34 PM lining up with a nearby delivery completed at 12:40 PM is the kind of match that survives scrutiny.
Avoiding Tolls Without Getting Deactivated
Google Maps and Waze both have an “Avoid Tolls” setting, and you can select your preferred navigation app inside DoorDash under Account and Settings. Turn it on before your shift and the app defaults to free routes.
The tradeoff is time. Toll-free routes are usually longer, and DoorDash expects deliveries completed in a safe and timely manner. Consistent lateness can trigger warnings and, in serious cases, account deactivation, though deactivation is typically reserved for repeated issues after prior notifications rather than a single slow run.8DoorDash. How We’re Enforcing Our Policies Fairly and Proportionately If the free route adds 15 minutes to a delivery estimated at 10, you risk a poor customer rating and a late flag.
A selective approach usually beats a blanket rule. Decline low-paying offers that require a toll. Accept the high-paying ones where the toll is a small share of the payout. Deduct every business toll you do pay so at least part of the cost comes back at tax time.
