Does Credit Karma Lower Your Score? Soft vs. Hard Inquiries

Checking your own credit on Credit Karma does not lower your score. Every login triggers what the credit industry calls a soft inquiry, which scoring models ignore and lenders never see.1Consumer Financial Protection Bureau. What Happens When a Mortgage Lender Checks My Credit Check it daily if you want. The score risks people worry about come from hard inquiries and specific financial behaviors, not from monitoring apps.

Soft Inquiries Versus Hard Inquiries

The Fair Credit Reporting Act sorts credit report access by who is asking and why.2Federal Trade Commission. Fair Credit Reporting Act When you look at your own credit through Credit Karma, a bank app, or a bureau directly, the check is a consumer disclosure. Scoring formulas, both FICO and VantageScore, ignore it entirely.1Consumer Financial Protection Bureau. What Happens When a Mortgage Lender Checks My Credit Pre-approval screenings and account reviews by your current creditors are soft inquiries too. They appear only on the private version of your report that you can see and lenders cannot.

A hard inquiry is different. It happens when you formally apply for credit, such as a mortgage, auto loan, credit card, or personal loan. The lender pulls your full report, and that pull is visible to other lenders. According to FICO, a single hard inquiry typically lowers your score by five points or less.3myFICO. Does Checking Your Credit Score Lower It The hit is small, but a cluster of applications in a short window can add up.

Hard inquiries stay on your credit report for two years. FICO scores only factor in hard inquiries from the previous 12 months, and even inside that window the effect fades within a few months.4Experian. How Long Do Hard Inquiries Stay on Your Credit Report

Rate Shopping Does Not Multiply the Damage

If you are comparing offers on a mortgage, auto loan, or student loan, each lender’s pull does not count separately. FICO treats all hard inquiries for the same type of loan within a 45-day window as one inquiry. VantageScore uses a 14-day window for the same purpose.5TransUnion. How Rate Shopping Can Impact Your Credit Score Do your shopping inside that timeframe and the score impact is essentially the same as a single application.

Why Your Credit Karma Number May Not Match a Lender’s

If you check Credit Karma and see a number lower than you expected, the app is not the reason. Two things explain the gap.

First, Credit Karma pulls your file from two of the three major bureaus: TransUnion and Equifax. It does not include Experian data.6Intuit Credit Karma. The Ins and Outs of Credit Scores An error or late payment reported only to Experian will not show up in Credit Karma, and a positive account reported only to Experian will not lift your Credit Karma number.

Second, Credit Karma displays your VantageScore 3.0, a model developed jointly by TransUnion, Equifax, and Experian.6Intuit Credit Karma. The Ins and Outs of Credit Scores Most lenders use one of several FICO models. For conventional mortgages, Fannie Mae currently requires specific older FICO versions.7Fannie Mae. General Requirements for Credit Scores Both FICO and VantageScore use the 300 to 850 range, but they weigh credit factors differently, so the same underlying data can produce meaningfully different numbers. Treat your Credit Karma score as a good trend indicator, not the exact figure a lender will see.

What Actually Drops a Score

When your Credit Karma number falls, look at what got reported to the bureaus between checks. A few things do most of the damage.

High Credit Utilization

Your credit utilization ratio is the share of your available revolving credit you are currently using. It is one of the largest score drivers, and the negative effects become more pronounced once utilization crosses roughly 30 percent of your total limit.8Experian. What Is a Credit Utilization Rate People with scores in the 800 to 850 range tend to keep utilization in the single digits.

Late Payments

Payment history carries more weight than any other factor in both FICO and VantageScore. A payment 30 or more days past due can be reported to the bureaus and, depending on your starting score and profile, can cost more than 100 points. A payment a day or two late generally is not reported and usually will not affect your score.

Other Common Causes

  • Closing an old account, which can shorten your average account age and reduce total available credit.
  • Opening several new accounts at once, which stacks hard inquiries and lowers average account age.
  • Rising total debt across your accounts, which signals higher risk.
  • Bankruptcy, which stays on your report for 10 years for Chapter 7 and 7 years for Chapter 13.

One old worry no longer belongs on this list. The three major bureaus removed all civil judgments from credit reports in 2017 and removed all remaining tax liens by April 2018.9Experian. Getting the Full Picture and Fixing Errors

Credit Karma is useful for tracking trends and spotting changes, but it is not a substitute for a full credit report. A complete report includes detailed payment history, every open and closed account, all hard inquiries from the past two years, and public records such as bankruptcies. Federal law requires each of the three nationwide bureaus to provide you with a free credit report every 12 months through a centralized source.11Office of the Law Revision Counsel. 15 USC 1681j – Charges for Certain Disclosures That source is AnnualCreditReport.com, the only federally authorized site for free annual reports.12Annual Credit Report. Your Rights to Your Free Annual Credit Reports Requesting your report there is also a soft inquiry and will not affect your score.

If Credit Karma or your full report shows an error, such as a balance you do not owe, an account you did not open, or a late payment that was on time, you have the right to dispute it directly with the bureau reporting the mistake. The bureau must investigate and respond.13Consumer Financial Protection Bureau. How Do I Dispute an Error on My Credit Report You can file online, by phone, or by mail. A written dispute should include your contact information, a description of the error, why it is wrong, and copies of supporting documents. Certified mail gives you proof of delivery. A dispute filed with one bureau only corrects that bureau’s report, so if the same error appears on the other two, file separately with each.
