Yes. If you bought your tires at Costco and one of them picks up a nail, Costco’s tire warranty covers it. A standard tread puncture that can be safely patched is repaired free under the lifetime service package that comes with every tire purchase. If the nail ruined the tire beyond repair, the five-year Road Hazard Warranty pays a prorated credit toward a replacement based on how much tread life you had left.
When the Nail Puncture Is Repairable
Every set of tires bought from Costco comes with an installation package that bundles lifetime maintenance at no extra charge: rotations, balancing, inflation checks, and flat repairs.1Costco. Costco Advantage A nail in the tread falls squarely under the flat repair benefit, so the fix costs nothing out of pocket.
Costco follows United States Tire Manufacturers Association standards for what counts as repairable. A tire generally qualifies if the puncture is in the tread area, is smaller than 1/4 inch, and the tire was not driven on while completely flat. The technician dismounts the tire from the wheel, inspects the interior for hidden damage, and patches it from the inside. Costco tells customers to refuse plug-only repairs, describing them as unreliable and a blowout risk.2Costco. Tire Tips
One thing to avoid before you bring the tire in: aerosol sealants like Fix-a-Flat. Using one can make the tire non-repairable, so Costco recommends skipping them when possible.3Costco. Road Hazard Warranty Terms and Conditions
When the Nail Destroys the Tire
Some nail damage can’t be patched — a puncture too large, too close to the sidewall, or one that shredded the tire’s interior. That is what the Road Hazard Warranty is for. The warranty defines a road hazard failure as a tire that becomes unserviceable due to cuts, non-repairable punctures, or impact damage, and a nail that destroys a tire fits that definition.3Costco. Coverage runs 60 months (five years) from the date of purchase, or until the tread wears down to 2/32 of an inch, whichever comes first.3Costco. Road Hazard Warranty Terms and Conditions Like the flat repair, it’s bundled into the installation package at no extra cost.4Costco. Costco Tires
How the Prorated Credit Works
You do not get a free replacement tire. You get a credit sized to the tread life you still had. Costco defines usable tread as the tire’s original tread depth minus the 2/32-inch legal minimum. The credit equals the percentage of usable tread still remaining, multiplied by what you originally paid for the tire.3Costco. Road Hazard Warranty Terms and Conditions
A worked example: say the tire came with 10/32 inch of tread when new, and the nail hits when 6/32 is left. Total usable tread is 8/32 (10 minus 2). Remaining usable tread is 4/32 (6 minus 2). That’s 50 percent of the usable life still on the tire, so Costco credits 50 percent of the purchase price and you cover the other half of a replacement.3Costco. Road Hazard Warranty Terms and Conditions A nail in a nearly new tire produces a large credit. A nail in a tire already worn to 3/32 leaves most of the cost on you.
What Can Void the Warranty
The Road Hazard Warranty comes with maintenance strings attached. To keep coverage active, tires must be rotated and balanced on the vehicle manufacturer’s schedule, kept at proper inflation pressure, and installed on a vehicle in sound mechanical condition.3Costco. Road Hazard Warranty Terms and Conditions You also need to be the original purchaser, present your receipt, and bring the damaged tire to a Costco tire center.
The warranty does not cover:
- Vandalism or accident damage. A slashed tire is not a road hazard.
- Commercial, racing, or off-road use.
- Snow chain or stud damage.
- Tires that have been transferred to a different vehicle from the one they were originally installed on.
- Rapid or irregular wear caused by worn or improperly maintained suspension and alignment components.3Costco. Road Hazard Warranty Terms and Conditions
Booking the Repair
Schedule a flat repair appointment online at CostcoTireAppointments.com or by calling your local Costco Tire Center.5Costco. Tire Center FAQs Appointments are prioritized over walk-ins. Walk-in service is accepted when a bay is open, but on busy days you may be turned away or wait considerably longer.
Bring your Costco membership card (the digital card in the app works), your wheel lock key if your vehicle has locking lug nuts, and your appointment confirmation. With an appointment, plan on roughly 60 to 90 minutes at the shop. Walk-ins can run anywhere from one to three hours or more.6Costco Guides. Only Costco-Purchased Tires Qualify
Both the free flat repair and the road hazard warranty apply only to tires that a Costco member bought from Costco Wholesale. Costco’s policy states plainly that it will not service tires purchased by non-members, and installation is available only for tires bought at Costco.7Costco.
