Among the Citi AAdvantage card rental car insurance options, only two cards carry the benefit: the Citi / AAdvantage Globe Mastercard and the Citi / AAdvantage Executive World Elite Mastercard. Both provide secondary coverage for rentals inside the United States and primary coverage for rentals in other countries, up to $75,000 per incident.1Forbes. American Airlines Card Benefits The Platinum Select, MileUp, and AAdvantage Business cards do not include rental car insurance at all.
Which AAdvantage Cards Don’t Cover Rental Cars
Three cards in the lineup leave you to the rental counter’s own coverage:
- Platinum Select World Elite Mastercard. Citi removed rental car insurance on September 22, 2019, along with several other travel protections, and has not restored it. The card now offers a Turo statement credit instead, but no insurance.2The Points Guy. Citi Slashes Benefits on Cards3American Airlines. Citi Platinum Card American Airlines Direct
- AAdvantage MileUp. The no-annual-fee card has never carried rental car coverage.1Forbes. American Airlines Card Benefits
- AAdvantage Business World Elite Mastercard. It earns 2x miles at car rental merchants but includes no insurance on the rental itself.4Citi. Citi AAdvantage Business Credit Card
How to Activate the Coverage
The benefit on the Globe and Executive cards is called MasterRental Coverage and is administered through Mastercard. Two things have to happen for the coverage to apply. You must pay for the entire rental with the eligible card, and you must decline the rental company’s collision damage waiver (CDW or LDW).1Forbes. American Airlines Card Benefits Accepting even partial CDW from the agency voids the credit card benefit.
Primary Versus Secondary Coverage
For rentals outside the United States, MasterRental pays first, without any requirement that you file through a personal auto policy.1Forbes. American Airlines Card Benefits For rentals inside the United States, the coverage is secondary. If you have a personal auto policy, you file with that insurer first, and MasterRental picks up what remains, including the deductible and other unreimbursed charges.5WalletHub. Citi Credit Card Rental Car Insurance If you carry no personal auto insurance, MasterRental can function as your only coverage domestically, though its terms still classify it as secondary.
What the Coverage Pays For
MasterRental reimburses the cost to repair or replace a damaged or stolen rental vehicle. The payout is capped at the lesser of the actual cash value, the repair cost, the wholesale market value less depreciation, or the agency’s purchase price less depreciation, up to $75,000 per incident.6Citi. MasterRental Coverage Benefit Terms
Two additional charges are reimbursable within limits. Loss-of-use fees are covered up to $500, and only when the rental company substantiates them with a fleet utilization log. Reasonable towing is covered for up to two tows.6Citi. MasterRental Coverage Benefit Terms
What the benefit does not cover is just as important. Personal liability for injuries or damage you cause to other people or their property is not included. Neither are personal belongings left inside the car, nor diminished-value fees the rental company may assess after a repair.6Citi. MasterRental Coverage Benefit Terms If liability protection matters to you, add it through the rental agency or a separate travel policy while still declining the CDW.
Eligible Vehicles, Countries, and Rental Length
The coverage applies to four-wheeled passenger vehicles designed for eight or fewer passengers and intended for paved roads, including standard sedans, minivans, and SUVs.6Citi. MasterRental Coverage Benefit Terms Many common rental choices fall outside it:
- Trucks, pickups, and vehicles with open cargo beds
- Full-size vans built on truck chassis, campers, and recreational vehicles
- Motorcycles, mopeds, and anything with fewer than four wheels
- Trailers and limousines
- Antique cars (over 20 years old, or out of production for at least 10 years)
- Exotic and high-performance cars from makers such as Ferrari, Lamborghini, Porsche, Bentley, Aston Martin, Maserati, Lotus, and Rolls Royce
- Sport-utility trucks such as the Chevy Avalanche or Cadillac Escalade EXT
Vehicles used for rideshare driving, delivery, or any other hire are also excluded.6Citi. MasterRental Coverage Benefit Terms
The rental cannot exceed 31 consecutive days. Going over that voids the benefit for the entire rental, regardless of where you rented.6Citi. MasterRental Coverage Benefit Terms
Because MasterRental is a Mastercard program, it carries Mastercard’s country restrictions. Coverage may be unavailable in Australia, Ireland (both the Republic and Northern Ireland), Israel, Italy, Jamaica, and New Zealand.7Mastercard. MasterRental Insurance Program Some of those countries require CDW by law or have rules that conflict with how MasterRental works, so renting through the agency’s own coverage is the safer choice there.8Forbes. What Your Credit Card Rental Car Coverage Doesn’t Include
Situations That Will Get a Claim Denied
Even with an eligible card, car, country, and rental length, several circumstances will knock out coverage. Damage from off-road driving, racing, reckless operation, driving under the influence, or any illegal activity is not covered. Normal wear and tear, mechanical breakdowns, and tire or rim damage not tied to a collision are also excluded, and the benefit will not pay if the vehicle is confiscated by government authorities.6Citi. MasterRental Coverage Benefit Terms Only you and anyone listed as an authorized driver on the rental agreement are covered; letting someone else drive the car invalidates the benefit.9Mastercard. How to File a Claim
Notify the benefit administrator within 30 days of the incident, and submit the full claim with documentation within 180 days.9Mastercard. Master Rental Claims are handled by Sedgwick Claims Management Services on behalf of New Hampshire Insurance Company. Start the process by calling 1-866-918-4670 or by using the online portal at mycardbenefits.com.5WalletHub. Citi Credit Card Rental Car Insurance
Plan to provide:
- The completed claim form from the benefits portal
- A copy of the rental agreement
- The credit card statement showing the rental charge
- A police report or case number (expected for major accidents and often requested for claims above $500)
- Photos of the damage
- An itemized repair estimate or bill from the rental company
- A fleet utilization log from the agency if you are claiming loss-of-use charges
A few habits save headaches later. Photograph the car thoroughly before leaving the lot. Keep the rental agreement, receipts, and any communication with the rental company together. If something happens, get a police report or at least a case number on the scene. And before you decline the CDW, confirm you are renting an eligible vehicle in an eligible country for no more than 31 days.9Mastercard. Master Rental
Globe or Executive if You’re Choosing
If rental car insurance is part of why you’re picking a card, both the Globe ($350 annual fee) and the Executive ($595 annual fee) carry identical MasterRental terms: the same secondary-domestic and primary-international structure and the same $75,000 cap. They part ways on other perks. The Executive includes unlimited Admirals Club lounge access and up to $120 a year in Avis/Budget rental credits. The Globe offers four Admirals Club guest passes a year and up to $240 annually in Turo credits.10CNBC Select.
