Chase Sapphire cards do cover Airbnb in the ways most travelers care about: the trip cancellation and interruption insurance treats private-residence rentals as covered lodging, the trip delay benefit will reimburse an Airbnb booked while you’re stranded, the Sapphire Reserve’s $300 annual travel credit applies to Airbnb charges, and the Sapphire Preferred earns 3x points on direct Airbnb bookings. The coverage has real conditions, though, and a few benefits do not extend to vacation rentals at all.
Trip Cancellation and Interruption Insurance
This is the coverage most cardholders are asking about, and both the Sapphire Preferred and Sapphire Reserve include it. The benefit reimburses up to $10,000 per covered traveler and $20,000 per trip for prepaid, nonrefundable travel expenses when a covered reason forces you to cancel or cut a trip short.1Chase. Chase Sapphire Travel Insurance Guide
Airbnb qualifies as covered lodging because of how the benefits guide defines it. The Sapphire Preferred’s guide lists a “Provider of Lodging” as “a hotel, inn, motel, bed and breakfast, or hostel” along with “non-commercial time shares, condominiums, or rentals of a private residence.”2Upgraded Points. Chase Sapphire Preferred Travel Insurance FAQ That phrase, “rentals of a private residence,” is what pulls Airbnb inside the policy. The insurance also covers costs charged by a “Travel Supplier,” which includes any Provider of Lodging.3The Points Guy. Proof Needed for Chase Trip Insurance
The reason for your cancellation is what determines whether the claim pays. Covered reasons include accidental illness or injury to the traveler, a traveling companion, or an immediate family member; severe weather that prevents travel; a change in military orders; quarantine imposed by a physician; the traveler’s primary home becoming uninhabitable; and jury duty.4NerdWallet. Trip Delay Reimbursement
If a flight, train, or ferry is delayed long enough to strand you overnight, the Sapphire cards will reimburse reasonable meals and lodging up to $500 per covered traveler.1Chase. Because the benefits guide’s definition of lodging includes private residence rentals, an Airbnb booked while you’re stuck should qualify as a reimbursable expense, as long as you keep itemized receipts and the amount is reasonable.3The Points Guy. Earning Points on Airbnb
The Sapphire Preferred earns 3x Ultimate Rewards points per dollar on vacation home rentals booked directly through Airbnb, Vrbo, Plum Guide, HomeAway, Homestay.com, and Vacasa, effective June 15, 2026 for new cardholders and October 15, 2026 for existing ones.7Chase Media. The Sapphire Reserve has no dedicated vacation home category. Direct Airbnb bookings on the Reserve earn 1x per dollar, but the same booking made through the Chase Travel portal earns 8x.6Frequent Miler. Chase Sapphire Reserve vs Preferred
One point of confusion worth clearing up: Chase explicitly states that vacation home rentals and homestays from merchants like Airbnb, Vrbo, and Vacasa do not qualify as “hotel stays” for the hotel bonus category. The Preferred’s 3x rate comes from the separate vacation homes category, not from hotels. Rewards eligibility ultimately depends on the merchant category code, and Chase warns that a merchant “may not have a merchant code in that category” even when the fit seems obvious.9Chase. Rewards Category FAQ Airbnb generally codes under MCC 7011 (hotels and motels), though that coding has been inconsistent across transactions.10NerdWallet. How Credit Card Issuers Define Travel
The $300 Travel Credit on the Reserve
The Sapphire Reserve’s $300 annual travel credit applies automatically to purchases coded as travel, and Airbnb typically qualifies. Chase defines travel broadly for this credit, including home rental platforms like Airbnb and Vrbo alongside airlines, hotels, car rentals, rideshare services, and campgrounds. You don’t have to route the booking through the Chase Travel portal; direct Airbnb charges are eligible.11AwardWallet. Chase Sapphire Reserve Travel Credit
The Sapphire Preferred has no equivalent. Its $100 annual credit applies only to prepaid hotel bookings made through Chase Travel, so a direct Airbnb booking will not draw against it.12The Points Guy. Chase Sapphire Preferred vs Chase Sapphire Reserve
What Sapphire Does Not Cover for Airbnb
Chase’s purchase protection benefit, which covers theft of or damage to newly purchased items, does not apply to Airbnb stays. It is designed for physical retail goods like electronics and does not extend to service transactions such as lodging.13Chase. Chase Purchase Protection — What to Know If a property is materially different from what was advertised, your options are Airbnb’s own resolution process or a standard credit card chargeback.
Emergency evacuation coverage, now up to $100,000 on both cards after the June 2026 Preferred refresh,14CNBC Select. Chase Sapphire Preferred New Benefits may not apply to a standalone Airbnb booking. The Sapphire Reserve benefits guide defines a “Covered Trip” for this benefit as “prepaid travel arrangements booked through a commercial licensed travel establishment consisting of travel agencies and/or common carrier organizations.” An Airbnb booking on its own likely does not meet that definition; the trip needs to include a flight or other common carrier travel charged to the card. The trip must also be at least five days long, more than 100 miles from home, and no more than 60 days.15Chase. Chase Sapphire Reserve Benefits Guide
