Does Chase Credit Card Cover Turo? Coverage Rules and Alternatives

Chase credit cards do not cover Turo rentals. The auto rental collision damage waiver built into the Chase Sapphire Reserve, Sapphire Preferred, Freedom Flex, and Freedom Unlimited excludes vehicles booked through peer-to-peer car-sharing platforms, and Turo fits that exclusion. This isn’t a case-by-case call. Chase’s own benefits guides spell it out, and Turo tells guests the same thing.

What Chase’s Benefits Guides Say About Turo

The Chase Sapphire Reserve benefits guide, effective October 1, 2024, lists as an exclusion any situation where “the Rental Vehicle is rented through a car sharing company that allows individuals to rent out their own vehicle.”1Chase. Chase Sapphire Reserve Benefits Guide The Chase Sapphire Preferred guide uses the same language and adds a definition of an eligible “Rental Agency” as “a commercial rental company licensed under the laws of the applicable jurisdiction and whose primary business is renting automobiles.”2Chase. Chase Sapphire Preferred Benefits Guide A neighbor renting out a personal Camry through an app doesn’t meet that definition.

Chase’s consumer education page on Sapphire rental car insurance is blunter, listing “peer-to-peer and hourly car rentals” among the excluded categories alongside motorcycles, moving trucks, and vehicles more than ten years old.3Chase. Chase Sapphire Rental Car Insurance Guide

The Freedom Flex benefits guide carries the identical car-sharing exclusion: coverage does not apply where “the Rental Vehicle is rented through a car sharing company that allows individuals to rent out their own vehicle.”4Chase. Chase Freedom Flex Benefits Guide The Freedom Unlimited offers auto rental coverage on the same general structural terms as the Freedom Flex, and Chase’s education pages present the two cards’ rental benefits together.5Chase. Turo itself confirms the outcome. Its help center says credit card issuers are “unlikely” to insure damage to a vehicle booked through the platform and that, because Turo is a peer-to-peer car-sharing service rather than a traditional rental agency, credit card companies may offer “no protection” at all.6Turo. Does the Commercial Host Exception Help?

There is one narrow scenario. Not every Turo host is an individual: some are licensed commercial businesses that list fleet vehicles on the platform. Chase’s eligibility definition requires a “commercial rental company licensed under the laws of the applicable jurisdiction,” and a Chase benefits specialist reportedly indicated that coverage would not be automatically excluded for a Turo booking if the cardholder could produce “a car rental contract showing that you are renting from a commercial rental company and not from an individual.”7The Points Guy. In practice, that path is not reliable. When a booking goes through a commercial host, the host’s own insurance plan applies rather than Turo’s standard protection.8NerdWallet. Turo Car Insurance Whether a specific host meets a card issuer’s contractual definition of a rental agency is not something anyone can confirm before a claim. Travel journalists who have tested the question recommend calling the number on the back of the card before booking, while expecting a no.7The Points Guy. Turo Car Rental Insurance

Other Major Cards Take the Same Position

The exclusion isn’t a Chase quirk. The Platinum Card from American Express explicitly excludes “vehicle sharing or peer to peer arrangements which allow independent owners to rent personal vehicles,” and the Capital One Venture X likewise limits its coverage to traditional rental car agencies.9Thrifty Traveler. How to Actually Cover a Turo Rental

With credit cards off the table, two options are left: Turo’s protection plans or a personal auto policy.

Turo’s Protection Plans

Turo sells three tiers of protection that cap a guest’s financial responsibility for physical damage to the host’s vehicle. They are contracts between the guest and Turo rather than insurance policies, except in Washington state, where they are classified as insurance.10Turo. Summary and Cost of Protection Plans for US Guests

  • Premier: the guest owes nothing for eligible physical damage. Not available to drivers aged 18–20 or for certain high-value vehicles, generally those worth more than $60,000, or more than $25,000 in some cases.11Turo. Protection Plans Including Insurance for US Guests
  • Standard: financial responsibility for physical damage is capped at $500.
  • Minimum: financial responsibility for physical damage is capped at $3,000.

Declining protection is allowed, but then the guest is on the hook for the full cost of repairs, or the vehicle’s actual cash value in a total loss, plus related costs such as towing, storage, and a claims processing fee of up to $150.11Turo. Protection Plans Including Insurance for US Guests None of the plans cover interior or mechanical damage; the guest is always responsible for those.

Every Turo trip also includes third-party liability coverage through Travelers Excess and Surplus Lines Company, meeting state-mandated minimum limits and sitting secondary to any personal auto insurance the guest carries.11Turo. Personal Auto Insurance

A personal auto policy may extend to a Turo rental, but it isn’t automatic. Progressive has said personal auto insurance “will typically extend to cars you rent,” including peer-to-peer bookings, with the policyholder’s existing coverages, limits, and deductibles applying.12Progressive. Peer-to-Peer Car Insurance Not every insurer takes that position, and Turo warns guests not to assume a personal policy treats car-sharing the way it treats a traditional rental.11Turo. There’s a downside worth weighing: a claim filed on a personal policy for a Turo accident goes on the insurance record and can affect rates. Turo’s protection plans are secondary to personal insurance, so Turo expects a guest’s own coverage to respond first before the plan pays.8NerdWallet.
