Does Chase Cover Rental Car Damage? Cards, Rules & Claims

Chase does cover rental car damage on most of its credit cards, reimbursing you for collision damage to or theft of the rental vehicle itself, provided you paid for the entire rental with the Chase card and declined the rental counter’s own collision damage waiver. The size of the benefit and whether it pays before or after your personal auto insurance depends on which Chase card you used.

What the Benefit Actually Pays For

The coverage is a collision damage waiver, not a full auto insurance policy. On every eligible Chase card it reimburses the same categories: physical damage to the rental car from a collision, theft of the vehicle, loss-of-use charges the rental company bills while the car is being repaired, administrative fees, and reasonable towing to the nearest repair facility.1Chase. Chase Sapphire Reserve Guide to Benefits Loss-of-use charges have to be “imposed and substantiated by the rental agency” to qualify.2Chase. Chase Sapphire Preferred Guide to Benefits

What the benefit does not cover is just as important. It will not pay for injuries to other people, damage to other vehicles or property, personal belongings taken from the car, medical bills, or lawsuits that follow an accident.3Chase. Credit Card Rental Car Insurance For that kind of liability protection you need a personal auto policy that extends to rentals, or you need to buy liability coverage from the rental company or a third party.

Primary or Secondary Depends on the Card

Whether Chase pays first or waits in line behind your own insurance comes down to which card is in your wallet.

Cards That Pay First

The Chase Sapphire Reserve reimburses up to $75,000 and the Chase Sapphire Preferred up to $60,000, both as primary coverage. A claim goes straight through the card benefit, and your personal auto insurer is never involved.4Chase. Chase Sapphire Rental Car Insurance Guide That matters because a claim never reported to your insurer cannot affect your premiums.

Several co-branded Chase cards also carry primary coverage. The United Explorer Card and United Quest Card each reimburse up to $60,000, with an exclusion for vehicles whose manufacturer’s suggested retail price exceeds $125,000.5Chase. Cards That Pay After Your Insurance

The Chase Freedom Flex, Chase Freedom Unlimited, and original Chase Freedom all offer secondary coverage on domestic rentals, with a $60,000 limit.8Chase. Chase Freedom Unlimited and Chase Freedom Guide to Benefits Secondary means you file a claim with your own auto insurer first and the card picks up what the policy doesn’t, including your deductible. If you don’t carry personal auto insurance at all, the secondary benefit effectively acts as primary.9NerdWallet. Rentals and Vehicles Chase Won’t Cover

The exclusions are broad enough that it’s worth checking before you assume you’re protected.

On the vehicle side, Chase excludes motorcycles, mopeds, recreational vehicles, limousines, cargo vans, trucks other than pickups, and passenger vans built for more than twelve people.1Chase. Chase Sapphire Reserve Guide to Benefits Antique vehicles, meaning cars over twenty years old or out of production for ten or more years, are out. Most Chase cards also exclude exotic and expensive vehicles by brand (Aston Martin, Bentley, Ferrari, Lamborghini, Maserati, McLaren, Porsche, Rolls Royce, and Tesla) and any vehicle with an MSRP over $125,000.13Chase. Chase Slate Guide to Benefits The Chase Sapphire Reserve is the one notable exception; it does not exclude exotic or high-value vehicles.4Chase. Peer-to-peer car-share rentals through platforms like Turo or Getaround are not covered. Chase defines an eligible rental agency as a “commercial rental company licensed under the laws of the applicable jurisdiction and whose primary business is renting automobiles,” and peer-to-peer hosts do not fit.14The Points Guy. Other exclusions worth knowing: rentals over 31 consecutive days, damage from off-road driving, damage caused by driving under the influence, intentional damage, ordinary wear and tear, and vehicle depreciation or “diminished value.”2Chase. If You Live in New York

New York residents should know about a change that took effect in October 2024. Chase’s updated Guides to Benefits state that for a New York resident renting inside the United States, coverage that would otherwise be primary becomes “excess” if the cardholder has personal auto insurance.1Chase. Chase Sapphire Reserve Guide to Benefits You file with your own insurer first and Chase reimburses the remainder. The change applies to the Sapphire Reserve, Sapphire Preferred, United Club, and several other cards, and coincided with Chase’s switch to Assurant as its benefits administrator.16Doctor of Credit. Changes on Chase Sapphire Reserve Car Insurance Benefit New York residents who don’t carry personal auto insurance, or who are renting outside the United States, still receive primary coverage.

International Rentals

Chase describes its auto rental coverage as available worldwide, with primary coverage both inside and outside the United States.1Chase. Chase Sapphire Reserve Guide to Benefits The reality has edges. The Visa network itself excludes Northern Ireland, the Republic of Ireland, Jamaica, and Israel from auto rental coverage. Chase has said its own benefit may extend to those countries, but its guides use the qualifier “where this benefit is available” without naming the exceptions.17FlyerTalk. Some countries require renters to carry insurance from the rental agency. Where you can’t decline the agency’s coverage, the Chase benefit falls to secondary behind whatever the agency provides.1Chase. Chase Sapphire Reserve Guide to Benefits Chase advises international travelers to call before leaving, and if the rental company or country wants proof of insurance, you can request a letter of coverage through chasecardbenefits.com.4Chase. Filing a Claim After Damage

Claims go through Chase’s benefits administrator, currently Assurant, which runs the eclaimsline.com portal. The sequence looks like this:

  • Report the incident within 100 days, either online at eclaimsline.com or by calling the benefits administrator number in your card’s Guide to Benefits. Sapphire Preferred uses 1-800-350-1362; Sapphire Reserve uses 1-800-350-1697.11CNBC Select. Chase Sapphire Rental Car Insurance
  • Gather your documentation: the rental agreement, the credit card statement showing the charge, the repair estimate and itemized bill, a demand letter from the rental company showing what you owe, an accident report, and if available a police report and photos of the damage.18NerdWallet. Chase Rental Car Insurance Guide
  • Submit all supporting documents postmarked within 365 days of the incident.13Chase. Chase Slate Guide to Benefits
  • Once the claim is approved, Chase pays the rental car company directly rather than reimbursing you.18NerdWallet. Chase Rental Car Insurance Guide

Cardholder reports suggest timelines vary. One claim was settled in under three weeks once documentation was complete; another took roughly nine months because of paperwork issues with the third-party processor.19Points With a Crew. Chase Sapphire Reserve Car Insurance Claim Saved Nearly $900 The usual bottleneck is getting the damage estimate and demand letter out of the rental company. In one case involving about $16,000 in damage, the administrator settled directly with the rental agency around three months after the claim was filed.20Miles Earn and Burn.
