Cash App does not send a 1099 for personal accounts used only for non-business transfers. Splitting rent with a roommate, paying a friend back for dinner, or receiving a birthday gift through the app are not taxable events, and no tax form is generated for them. The IRS only requires payment platforms to report money received for goods and services, so personal transfers between friends and family sit outside the reporting rules entirely.1Cash App. Form 1099-K
That said, the type of payment matters more than the type of account. A personal account can still produce other tax forms in a few specific situations, and it’s worth knowing which ones.
Why Personal Transfers Aren’t Reported
The IRS draws a hard line between personal payments and business income. Money moved between friends and family doesn’t represent income to anyone, so no form is required and nothing needs to appear on your return.
The catch is that the nature of the payment controls, not the label on your account. If you sell handmade jewelry or do freelance work and accept payment through a personal Cash App account, those payments are still business income in the eyes of the IRS, even if no 1099-K ever arrives. The tax obligation exists whether a form shows up or not. Cash App offers a dedicated business account, marked with a green badge on your profile, that keeps commercial activity separate from personal transfers and makes recordkeeping cleaner at tax time.2Cash App. Create a Cash App Business Account
When a 1099-K Would Apply
Cash App issues a Form 1099-K when a business account crosses the federal reporting threshold: more than $20,000 in gross payments and more than 200 transactions in a calendar year. Both conditions have to be met.3Internal Revenue Service. Understanding Your Form 1099-K At $25,000 across 150 transactions, no federal 1099-K is triggered because the transaction count falls short.
If you’ve seen posts claiming the threshold dropped to $600 or $5,000, there’s a reason for the confusion. The American Rescue Plan Act of 2021 lowered the threshold to $600 with no transaction minimum, and the IRS had planned a $5,000 phase-in figure for 2024. None of that took effect. The One Big Beautiful Bill Act, signed in 2025, restored the original $20,000-and-200-transaction standard retroactively to 2022.4Internal Revenue Service. States can set their own, lower thresholds. Massachusetts, Vermont, Virginia, Maryland, Montana, North Carolina, and the District of Columbia require reporting at amounts as low as $600. Illinois sets its threshold at $1,000 with a minimum of four transactions. If you run any kind of business activity in one of these states, a 1099-K may arrive even when the federal rule wouldn’t have required one. Check your state revenue department for the specific figure that applies.
Other Forms a Personal User Might Still Receive
A personal account can still generate a tax form if you use certain features of the app. None of these have anything to do with the 1099-K, and most are triggered by small dollar amounts.
Form 1099-INT for Savings Interest
If you use Cash App’s savings feature, interest earned on your balance is taxable. Cash App issues a Form 1099-INT when you earn $10 or more in interest during a calendar year.6Cash App. Savings and Taxes FAQ Interest under $10 is still taxable, you just won’t get a form.
Form 1099-MISC for Referral Bonuses
Cash App occasionally runs promotions that pay you for inviting new users. Those bonuses are taxable, and if they total $600 or more in the year, Cash App is required to send a Form 1099-MISC reporting them as prize or award income.7Internal Revenue Service. Investment Forms for Stocks and Bitcoin
If you also use Cash App Investing or buy and sell Bitcoin through the app, those are separate from your personal transfers and generate their own forms. Selling stocks produces a Composite Form 1099-B, and the same form arrives if you earn $10 or more in stock dividends during the year.8Cash App. Tax Reporting with Cash App Investing: B-Notices For digital asset sales made after 2025, brokers report on the new Form 1099-DA rather than the 1099-B, so Bitcoin sales on Cash App during 2026 should produce a 1099-DA.9Internal Revenue Service. If a 1099-K Shows Up by Mistake
Personal payments sometimes get miscoded as business transactions, and a 1099-K arrives for income that isn’t really income. The IRS treats this as a known issue with payment apps and has a specific fix.
First, contact Cash App and request a corrected form. Keep records of the request and any response. If a corrected 1099-K comes back, use that version when you file.
If you can’t get a corrected form in time, file your return anyway and zero out the error on Schedule 1 of Form 1040 using two matched entries:11Internal Revenue Service. Actions to Take if a Form 1099-K Is Received in Error or With Incorrect Information
- Part I, Line 8z (Other Income): enter the erroneous amount with the description “Form 1099-K received in error.”
- Part II, Line 24z (Other Adjustments): enter the same amount with the same description.
The two entries cancel out, leaving no net effect on your adjusted gross income. The IRS sees that the 1099-K was reported and addressed, which keeps a mismatch notice from being generated later.
