Does Cash App Ask for Your Social Security Number?

Yes. Cash App does ask for your Social Security number, or an Individual Taxpayer Identification Number, once you try to use features beyond basic peer-to-peer transfers. The request comes from inside the app itself, never through a text, email, or phone call, and it exists because federal law requires payment platforms to verify who their users are.

A brand-new account can send and receive small amounts without an SSN, but the caps are tight: up to $1,000 combined in a rolling 30-day period, with a $1,500 lifetime ceiling on unverified accounts. Most people hit the prompt fairly quickly.

When the App Triggers the Request

Cash App asks for the last four digits of your SSN or ITIN when you try to unlock any of the following:

  • Buying Bitcoin or stocks. Any investment activity requires identity verification before your first trade.
  • Ordering a Cash Card, the physical debit card linked to your Cash App balance.
  • Raising your sending or receiving limits above the unverified caps.
  • Setting up direct deposit to route a paycheck into your Cash App balance.

In some cases the app follows up for more: your full nine-digit SSN or ITIN, a residential address, an unexpired government-issued photo ID, or income verification. Business accounts that accept customer payments need a tax identification number too, which can be an SSN, ITIN, or Employer Identification Number depending on your tax designation.

Why Cash App Is Required to Ask

Cash App is classified as a money services business under federal law, so it follows the same identity rules that apply to banks. Two laws drive the request.

The Bank Secrecy Act requires every money services business to run an anti-money laundering program, and the implementing regulations require procedures to verify user identity and collect identifying information, including name, date of birth, address, and an identification number such as an SSN.

The USA PATRIOT Act layered on a Customer Identification Program requirement, codified at 31 U.S.C. ยง 5318, that requires financial institutions to verify each customer’s identity when the account is opened. Together these rules are commonly called “Know Your Customer” requirements. A money services business that fails to comply faces civil penalties of $5,000 per violation and can lose its ability to operate.

What You’ll Need to Provide

Have these ready before you start:

  • Your full legal name, exactly as it appears on your government-issued ID.
  • Your date of birth, matching your official records.
  • The last four digits of your SSN or ITIN at minimum. Cash App may request the full number if initial verification is unsuccessful or if the feature you want requires it.
  • An unexpired government-issued photo ID: driver’s license, state ID, or passport.

If You Don’t Have an SSN

Cash App accepts an ITIN in place of an SSN. If you have neither, the app allows verification through other means, such as a government-issued ID alone. Noncitizens and others without a Social Security number can still reach the verified feature set.

How to Tell a Real Request From a Scam

This is where people get burned. Cash App will only ask for your SSN or ITIN inside the app. Cash App service representatives will never ask for your Social Security number by phone, email, social media, or text.

Real support may ask for basic account details to confirm they’re helping the right person, like your legal name, email, phone number, or the last few digits of a linked bank card. They will never ask for your full debit card number, PIN, bank account number, sign-in code, or SSN through any channel outside the app. If a caller or message claims to be Cash App and asks for your SSN, it’s a scam. You can reach real support by opening the profile icon in the app and selecting “Support,” or by calling 1-800-969-1940.

Cash App encrypts information you submit before it leaves your device, and it may share identity information with third-party service providers that help with fraud prevention and identity verification, as outlined in its Privacy Notice.

What Verification Unlocks

The gap between unverified and verified accounts is wide. Unverified users are capped at $1,000 sent and received combined in a rolling 30-day window, with a $1,500 total account ceiling. That’s fine for trying the platform and impractical for regular use.

After verification, the sending limit rises to up to $40,000 on a rolling 30-day period. Receiving limits are set on an individual account basis and appear under the “Limits” tab in your account settings. You also get an unlimited Cash App balance, Bitcoin and stock trading, and the Cash Card.

Processing typically runs from a few hours to several business days after you submit your information. The verification section in your profile will show “Verified” once it’s done.

What Happens If You Refuse

If you decline to provide the information, or if Cash App can’t verify your identity, the account stays restricted. Cash App’s Terms of Service also reserve the right to downgrade, suspend, or terminate accounts that provide inaccurate or incomplete information, and users agree not to refuse cooperation with identity confirmation requests when they create an account. Refusing isn’t a workaround; it’s a ceiling.
