Does CareCredit Report Authorized Users to Credit Bureaus?

Yes. CareCredit, which is issued by Synchrony Bank, does report authorized users to the credit bureaus. Once you’re added and verified on someone’s account, Synchrony sends the account’s data to Equifax, Experian, and TransUnion as part of its regular monthly reporting, and the tradeline shows up on your credit report along with the primary holder’s.

How the Reporting Works

After the primary cardholder adds you, the account typically starts appearing on your credit report within one to two billing cycles. Synchrony reports the payment history, current balance, credit limit, and account age. On your report, the account is labeled to identify you as an authorized user rather than the primary holder. Experian, for example, lists the “Responsibility” field as “authorized user,” which signals to any lender reviewing the file that you aren’t legally responsible for the debt.1Experian. Understanding Your Experian Credit Report

Because Synchrony furnishes information to the bureaus, it’s required under the Fair Credit Reporting Act to keep that information accurate.2Office of the Law Revision Counsel. 15 USC 1681b – Permissible Purposes of Consumer Reports If something on the tradeline looks wrong, such as a payment marked late that wasn’t, you can dispute it directly with the bureau reporting it.

How the Account Can Help or Hurt Your Credit

What appears on your report can move your score in either direction, depending entirely on how the primary cardholder handles the account.

Payment history is the biggest lever. It accounts for roughly 35% of a FICO Score, so on-time payments from the primary holder become part of your track record too. A missed or late payment posts the same way on your report as it does on theirs.3Experian. Will Being an Authorized User Help My Credit

Credit utilization is the next factor. The account’s limit and balance both feed into your overall utilization ratio. A $5,000 limit with a $500 balance adds a low-utilization line to your profile, which generally helps. A card carried near its limit drags in the other direction.3Experian. Length of credit history can matter as well. Some issuers backdate the authorized user tradeline to the date the account was originally opened rather than the date you were added. If the primary cardholder has held the CareCredit account for years, that can meaningfully extend the age of accounts on your file. Practices vary between issuers, though, and this isn’t guaranteed.

The Deferred Interest Problem

CareCredit is marketed heavily on its promotional financing, often written as “no interest if paid in full” within 6, 12, 18, or 24 months. The structure has a trap worth understanding as an authorized user. If the promotional balance isn’t paid off by the end of the promotional window, Synchrony charges interest retroactively from the original purchase date on the full original amount, not just on what remains.

On a 24-month offer for a $200-plus purchase, the entire balance must be cleared within those 24 months. If a small remainder is still sitting on the account when the clock runs out, interest is calculated back to the day of the charge. Minimum monthly payments alone are usually not enough to pay it off in time.

As an authorized user, you can make charges, but you have no control over whether the primary cardholder finishes paying by the deadline. If deferred interest hits and the balance jumps, the higher utilization shows up on your report too. That’s why authorized user status on a CareCredit account works best when there’s clear communication with the primary holder about how any promotional balance will be paid down.

A Boundary Worth Knowing: Mortgages

If you’re hoping the CareCredit tradeline will help you qualify for a mortgage, be careful. Under Fannie Mae’s guidelines for manually underwritten loans, authorized user tradelines generally can’t be counted in the underwriting decision. There are two exceptions: you can supply 12 months of documentation showing you were the one actually paying, or the account owner is your spouse and isn’t on the mortgage application. Loans processed through Fannie Mae’s Desktop Underwriter follow different automated rules.4Fannie Mae. If You’re a Spouse, Reporting Is Required

When the authorized user is a spouse, the Equal Credit Opportunity Act adds a specific requirement. Under Regulation B, if a creditor furnishes account information to a credit bureau and the account holder’s spouse is permitted to use the account, the creditor must report the information in a way that both spouses can access it on their individual credit reports. The regulation doesn’t require the creditor to distinguish between a spouse who is an authorized user and one who is contractually liable.5eCFR. 12 CFR Part 202 – Equal Credit Opportunity Act (Regulation B)

So if your spouse adds you to their CareCredit card, Synchrony is legally required to report it under your name. For non-spouse authorized users, the reporting still happens, but as industry practice rather than an ECOA mandate.5eCFR. 12 CFR Part 202 – Equal Credit Opportunity Act (Regulation B)

Getting the Account Off Your Report

If the account is hurting rather than helping, you don’t need the primary cardholder’s cooperation to get out. You can contact Synchrony directly to have yourself removed as an authorized user, and the primary cardholder can also call to make the same request.6Consumer Financial Protection Bureau. How Do I Remove an Authorized User From My Credit Card Account

Once you’re removed, the account should stop appearing on your credit report, and it will no longer influence your scores. If it keeps showing up after removal, dispute the tradeline with each credit bureau, explaining that you’re no longer an authorized user and asking for it to come off. The primary cardholder should also consider requesting a new card number, since the old one may still be stored in your records.6Consumer Financial Protection Bureau. If the Primary Cardholder Dies

When the primary CareCredit cardholder passes away, the account is generally closed by Synchrony once it’s notified. As an authorized user, you’re not on the hook for the balance. That obligation belongs to the deceased person’s estate.7Consumer Financial Protection Bureau. Am I Liable to Repay the Debt as an Authorized User If a debt collector tells you otherwise, you can ask for proof that you co-signed or were contractually liable.

The closed account may still appear on your credit report for a while. If it was in good standing, that’s usually harmless. If there was a delinquent balance at the time of death, contact the credit bureaus to dispute any negative marks against you, since authorized users aren’t responsible for the debt.
