The Capital One Venture X does not cover Turo. The card’s auto rental collision damage waiver, provided through Visa Infinite, applies only to vehicles rented from a traditional rental car agency, and Turo’s peer-to-peer car-sharing marketplace does not qualify. If you book a Turo trip, you’ll need to arrange protection another way.
Why the Venture X Excludes Turo
Venture X cardholders get Visa Infinite’s primary auto rental collision damage waiver, which covers theft and collision damage on vehicles valued up to $75,000, along with loss-of-use charges, towing, and administrative fees.1Capital One. Visa Infinite Guide to Benefits2Capital One. Rental Car Insurance The benefit is real, but it’s tightly scoped. Eligibility is limited to vehicles obtained from a “rental car agency,” and a claim requires a formal rental agreement from an “auto rental company.”
Turo does not describe itself that way. The company identifies as a peer-to-peer car-sharing marketplace, not a rental agency.3Turo. Insurance or Coverage via a Credit Card One travel site reported that it confirmed the exclusion directly with a Capital One contact, which stated that “Turo is not covered per the terms of Visa Infinite’s rental car protections benefits.”4Miles to Memories. Capital One Insurance on Turo Rentals A separate travel rewards analysis grouped the Venture X with premium cards that “generally fail to trigger rental car coverage for Turo.”5Thrifty Traveler. The Visa Infinite guide doesn’t use the phrase “peer-to-peer” or name Turo. It doesn’t need to. A Turo booking produces no rental agreement from a commercial agency, so it can’t clear the paperwork the claims process requires.1Capital One. Visa Infinite Guide to Benefits
The Commercial Host Exception
One narrow scenario is worth flagging. Some Turo listings come from commercial hosts, which are businesses operating as licensed car rental companies rather than individual owners sharing personal cars. Chase and American Express have suggested coverage might apply if a renter books through a commercial host and can produce a formal rental contract showing the transaction was with a licensed commercial entity.6The Points Guy. Turo Car Rental Insurance Whether Capital One would treat a commercial host booking as eligible has not been publicly confirmed. And when you rent from a commercial host, that host’s own commercial insurance typically applies instead of Turo’s protection plans anyway.7NerdWallet. Turo Car Insurance
Other Premium Cards Won’t Help Either
Switching cards is not the fix. No major credit card has been confirmed to cover standard Turo bookings.
- Chase Sapphire Reserve’s benefit guide excludes vehicles not rented from a rental agency, and the card explicitly lists Turo and Zipcar as excluded services.6The Points Guy. Turo Car Rental Insurance8Upgraded Points. Chase Sapphire Reserve Car Rental Insurance Benefits
- American Express Platinum’s terms exclude “vehicle sharing or peer to peer arrangements which allow independent owners to rent personal vehicles,” and an Amex agent confirmed standard coverage would not apply to Turo.6The Points Guy. Turo Car Rental Insurance
NerdWallet described credit card coverage as “typically address[ing] rentals from traditional car-rental companies, not car-sharing services.”9NerdWallet. Credit Card Rental Car Coverage Turo itself tells guests that credit card issuers are “unlikely” to provide any insurance for damage to a vehicle booked through the platform and advises against assuming the card will pay out.3Turo. How To Actually Cover a Turo Trip
With the card benefit out of the picture, you have two real options: Turo’s protection plans and your personal auto insurance.
Turo’s Protection Plans
Turo sells its own protection plans to U.S. guests. These are contracts limiting your out-of-pocket responsibility for physical damage to the host’s vehicle, classified as protection plans rather than insurance except in Washington state.10Turo. Protection Plans Including Insurance for US Guests There are three tiers:
- Premier: $0 out-of-pocket for eligible physical damage, third-party liability up to $750,000, priced at 100% of the trip cost with a $14-per-day minimum. Not available to guests aged 18 to 20 or on certain high-value vehicles.10Turo. Protection Plans Including Insurance for US Guests
- Standard: responsibility capped at $500, third-party liability at state minimums, roughly 40% of the trip price with a $12-per-day minimum.11The Zebra. Turo Car Insurance
- Minimum: responsibility capped at $3,000, third-party liability at state minimums, 15% to 25% of the trip price with a $10-per-day minimum.11The Zebra. Turo Car Insurance
Third-party liability under all three plans is provided through Travelers. None of the plans cover interior damage or mechanical damage. Regardless of which plan you pick, you can still be charged claims processing fees of up to $150 plus towing and storage costs. In some states, Turo also offers optional Supplemental Liability Insurance through Mobilitas Insurance Company with limits up to $300,000.10Turo. Protection Plans Including Insurance for US Guests
Your Personal Auto Insurance
Your own auto policy may extend to a Turo rental, but coverage varies widely by insurer and is not guaranteed. Auto insurance generally follows the vehicle rather than the driver, which complicates matters when the vehicle belongs to a stranger on a peer-to-peer platform.11The Zebra. Turo Car Insurance Some policies extend comprehensive and collision coverage to rentals; others treat peer-to-peer services differently than traditional agencies.
If you do carry coverage that extends to the trip, Turo treats it as primary. You’d file with your own insurer first, and Turo’s protection plan sits behind it.10Turo. Protection Plans Including Insurance for US Guests That means the incident goes on your record and you pay your policy’s deductible.11The Zebra. Turo Car Insurance
Call your insurer before you book, and ask specifically about peer-to-peer car sharing. The answer for a Hertz reservation isn’t necessarily the answer for Turo.
