Does Capital One Auto Loan Have a Prepayment Penalty?

Capital One Auto Finance does not charge a prepayment penalty on its auto loans. You can pay off the balance early, in part or in full, without owing any extra fee for doing so.1Capital One. Auto Refinancing FAQs Because Capital One calculates interest on a simple-interest basis, paying early also means less interest accrues, so the total you pay is lower than if you followed the original schedule.

Why Paying Early Actually Saves You Money

Capital One auto loans use simple interest. Interest is calculated daily against your remaining principal rather than fixed at the start of the loan.2Capital One. Simple-Interest Car Loans: What You Need to Know Each payment covers the interest that has built up since your last one, then the rest reduces principal. Shrink the principal and the daily interest shrinks with it.

That is what makes early payoff worth doing. With no penalty on the back end and interest calculated day by day, every extra dollar you send goes straight to principal and cancels out interest that would have accrued over the remaining months.1Capital One. Auto Refinancing FAQs

Confirm the Terms in Your Own Contract

The policy is straightforward, but it is still worth reading your signed loan agreement. Federal law requires every closed-end auto loan contract to state clearly whether a prepayment penalty applies. A lender cannot leave the question open; if there is no penalty, the contract has to say so.3Consumer Financial Protection Bureau. 12 CFR 1026.18 – Content of Disclosures

Look for a section labeled “Prepayment” in the disclosure box near the front of the contract. For a simple-interest loan, that box will state whether a charge applies for paying all or part of the principal early.3Consumer Financial Protection Bureau. 12 CFR 1026.18 – Content of Disclosures

How to Request a Payoff Quote

Before you send a final payment, ask Capital One for a formal payoff quote. The payoff figure is not the same number that shows up as your current balance on your statement. It includes the interest that will accrue between today and the day the payment posts.4Consumer Financial Protection Bureau. What Is a Payoff Amount and Is It the Same as My Current Balance

On a simple-interest loan, daily interest (per diem) is your annual rate divided by 365, multiplied by the remaining principal. A $30,000 balance at 7% runs about $5.75 a day. A few days’ difference in when the payment arrives changes what you owe. The payoff quote lists a “good through” date, typically about ten days out. If your payment lands after that date, you may owe a small amount to cover the extra days.

You can get the quote by logging into your Capital One account online, using the mobile app, or calling customer service at 1-800-227-4825.5Capital One. Call Capital One Customer Service Have your account number and the date you plan to pay ready.

Submitting the Final Payment

Capital One accepts payoffs online, through the mobile app, or by mail. If you are mailing a check, the addresses are:

  • Standard mail: Capital One Auto Finance, P.O. Box 60511, City of Industry, CA 91716
  • Overnight delivery: Capital One Auto Finance, Attn: Payment Processing, 2525 Corporate Place, 2nd Floor Suite #250, Monterey Park, CA 91754

Confirm the correct address against your most recent statement, since processing locations can change.5Capital One. Call Capital One Customer Service Online payment is generally the fastest option because it removes mail transit time, and daily interest keeps accruing until the money posts.

Once the final payment clears, Capital One releases the lien on your vehicle. In states that use Electronic Lien and Title systems, that release moves digitally between the lender and the motor vehicle agency. In paper-title states, Capital One mails the title after removing the lien. The process generally takes up to 30 days from when the payment clears.

Getting Refunds on GAP and Extended Warranties

If your loan included optional products like GAP insurance or an extended warranty, paying off early may entitle you to a pro-rated refund for the unused coverage. These products are priced over the full loan term, so cutting the loan short leaves you paying for protection you no longer need.

For GAP insurance, check the terms of your policy or certificate. Many contracts allow cancellation and a refund of the unused premium, particularly if no claim has been filed. Contact whoever issued the GAP policy, which could be the dealer, a third-party insurer, or Capital One, depending on how it was sold.

For an extended warranty or vehicle service contract, read the cancellation terms first to check for any cancellation fee. Then contact the issuing company or the dealership’s finance office to request cancellation. Get written confirmation, and follow up with Capital One to verify how any refund was handled. If the cost was rolled into the loan balance, the refund typically reduces the principal rather than arriving as a separate check.

Expect a Small Dip in Your Credit Score

Paying off an auto loan early is a solid financial move, but it can cause a small, temporary drop in your credit score. Closing the loan trims your credit mix, which counts for about 10% of a FICO score. If the auto loan was your only installment account, your report will show only revolving accounts afterward, and that shift can nudge the score down.6Experian. Will Paying Off a Loan Improve Credit

The dip is usually modest and short-lived. Payment history is the biggest factor in your score at 35%, and every on-time payment you made on the loan stays on your report. Over time, the interest you save easily outweighs a brief score adjustment, especially if you are not planning to apply for new credit soon.

If You Are on Active Duty

The Servicemembers Civil Relief Act caps interest at 6% per year on debts taken out before you entered military service.
