Does AppleCare Cover a Lost Apple Pencil? Coverage, Costs, and Insurance

AppleCare does not cover a lost Apple Pencil. Standard AppleCare+ for iPad handles accidental damage but not loss, and the upgraded AppleCare+ with Theft and Loss plan explicitly excludes the pencil. The terms state that “Theft and Loss coverage does not apply to iPad Input Devices and no replacement iPad Input Devices will be provided for approved iPad theft or loss claims.”1Apple. AppleCare+ Terms and Conditions If your pencil is gone, you’re buying a new one.

Why Loss Is Excluded

Apple groups the Apple Pencil, Apple Pencil Pro, and Apple-branded iPad keyboards together as “iPad Input Devices.” The Theft and Loss tier of AppleCare+ will replace a stolen or lost iPhone, iPad, or Apple Watch, but input devices are carved out of that promise. The contract language is direct and leaves no interpretive room.1Apple. AppleCare+ Terms and Conditions

The exclusion still applies when the pencil disappears alongside the iPad. Apple grants a narrow exception for Apple Watch bands lost or stolen with a watch, but no equivalent exists for the Apple Pencil.1Apple. AppleCare+ Terms and Conditions Some users have reported Apple Store employees making exceptions in concurrent-loss situations, but nothing in the written terms supports that as policy.2MacRumors. AppleCare One, Apple’s multi-device subscription, follows the same rule. It extends accidental damage protection to a pencil paired with a covered iPad, but theft and loss claims under AppleCare One are limited to iPhones, iPads, and Apple Watches.3Apple. AppleCare

What AppleCare+ Does Cover on the Pencil

With an active AppleCare+ or AppleCare One plan on your iPad, the pencil is covered for hardware defects after the one-year warranty and for accidental damage from handling, such as drops or a cracked housing.3Apple. AppleCare Accidental damage claims carry a $29 service fee per incident, with unlimited incidents allowed while the plan is active. The Apple Pencil Pro and earlier models share the same terms and the same fee.1Apple. AppleCare+ Terms and Conditions

A damage claim on the pencil counts as its own service event, separate from any claim on the iPad, even when both were damaged in the same mishap.4Apple. AppleCare+ for Education Terms The pencil also does not have to have been purchased alongside the iPad. Apple loosened that requirement in 2019, so any pencil you own is eligible for accidental damage coverage as long as your iPad’s AppleCare+ plan is active.5MacRumors. Try to Find It First

Before you give up and buy a replacement, see if the pencil can be located. The Apple Pencil Pro works with the Find My app on your iPad. The app gives proximity-based guidance, showing whether the pencil is far away, nearby, or within reach, and the pencil will play an alert sound once you’re close.6Apple. Locate Your Apple Pencil Pro For this to work, you need to have added the pencil to Find My beforehand, and the pencil has to be charged and awake. The tracking is not as precise as an AirTag.7wikiHow. Find My Apple Pencil

Older Apple Pencil models have no Find My support. Your only built-in option is checking the iPad’s Bluetooth settings: if the pencil shows as “Connected,” it’s within roughly 30 to 40 feet, and you can narrow things down from there.8Apple Discussions. Find a Lost Apple Pencil Third-party apps that estimate proximity from Bluetooth signal strength can help with the search.

Replacement Prices

If the pencil is truly gone, you’re paying retail. Current pricing:

  • Apple Pencil Pro: $129
  • Apple Pencil (2nd generation): $129
  • Apple Pencil (1st generation): $99
  • Apple Pencil (USB-C): $79

These reflect Apple’s retail listings.9Macworld. Apple Pencil Compared Once you buy the replacement, it falls under your existing iPad AppleCare+ plan for accidental damage going forward.

Will Homeowners or Renters Insurance Pay?

Probably not. Standard homeowners and renters policies generally do not cover items that are simply lost or misplaced. They cover named perils like theft and fire, and a pencil that vanished on its own won’t qualify.10Progressive. Home Insurance Cover Lost Items Some insurers sell electronics endorsements that include “mysterious disappearance” coverage, but the deductibles tend to be high. One insurer’s technology endorsement carries a $250 deductible, more than any Apple Pencil costs new.11USAA. Electronics Coverage Filing a claim rarely pencils out.
