Does Apple Charge Sales Tax on In-App Purchases?

Yes. Apple does charge sales tax on in-app purchases in states that tax digital goods, and the charge shows up as a separate line on your receipt on top of the listed price. The rate is set by the billing address tied to your Apple account, so two people buying the same upgrade can pay different totals depending on where they live.

What Kinds of In-App Purchases Get Taxed

Most states now treat digital products like physical goods for sales tax purposes. That sweeps in streaming subscriptions, one-time purchases of premium app features, downloadable content such as extra game levels, and digital media like movies, music, and e-books. Cloud-based software you access through a subscription, including photo editors and productivity apps, is also taxable in many states.

In-game virtual currency follows the same pattern in practice. When you buy gems, coins, or similar tokens, you are purchasing a digital product, and Apple typically collects sales tax on that transaction in states that tax digital goods. A few states draw a technical line between buying a digital product outright and loading stored value onto an account, similar to a gift card, which can affect timing. For most App Store buyers, though, currency packs are taxed at the same rate as any other digital purchase in your jurisdiction.

Not every category is taxed everywhere. Some states exempt things like digital periodicals or educational software from their standard sales tax. Roughly two dozen states participate in the Streamlined Sales and Use Tax Agreement, which gives them uniform definitions for taxable digital audio works, digital audiovisual works, digital books, and digital codes.1Multistate Tax Commission (MTC). How Apple Figures Out Your Rate

Apple calculates sales tax from the billing address stored on your Apple account. Its transaction tax system reads the country, state, county, city, and district from that address to identify every jurisdiction that applies to the sale.2Apple Developer. Transaction Tax Report Fields Update your address after a move, and future purchases will be taxed at the new location’s rate.

The combined rate varies widely. Five states have no state-level sales tax at all: Alaska, Delaware, Montana, New Hampshire, and Oregon. In-app purchases in those states carry no tax. Other states impose a general sales tax but exempt digital goods. On the other end, combined state and local rates top 10 percent in parts of some states. The nationwide population-weighted average sits around 7.5 percent, but your actual rate depends on whether your city or county adds a local surcharge.3Tax Foundation. Where you happen to be when you tap “buy” generally does not change the tax. Traveling in another state and buying a subscription still pulls from your stored billing address, not the Wi-Fi network or cell tower you are on. That approach lines up with sourcing rules under the Streamlined Sales and Use Tax Agreement, which default to the buyer’s address on file when there is no shipping destination.4Multistate Tax Commission. Why the Charge Comes From Apple, Not the Developer

Most states have marketplace facilitator laws that put the tax-collection duty on the platform hosting a sale rather than the individual seller. Under those laws, Apple is treated as the retailer for every App Store transaction. That is why your card statement shows a charge from Apple rather than from the game studio or software company behind the app, and it spares developers from registering for tax permits in dozens of jurisdictions and tracking local rates.

These laws became workable after the U.S. Supreme Court’s 2018 decision in South Dakota v. Wayfair, which scrapped the older rule that a seller had to be physically present in a state before that state could require it to collect tax. The Court held that sufficient economic activity in a state was enough of a connection to justify a collection obligation.5Supreme Court of the United States. South Dakota v. Wayfair, Inc. Apple clears any state’s threshold, so it collects wherever state law requires. Developers are generally not on the hook for tax on App Store sales as long as Apple has collected and remitted the correct amount.

How to Check the Tax on a Purchase

You can see the exact sales tax Apple charged through the App Store on your iPhone or iPad:6Apple. View Your Purchase History for the App Store and Other Apple Media Services

  • Open the App Store and tap your profile icon at the top of the screen.
  • Tap Purchase History. You may be asked to sign in with Face ID, Touch ID, or your password.
  • Select any transaction to see the date, order ID, and an itemized breakdown that splits the base price from the sales tax.
  • Tap “Last 90 days” at the top and change the date range to find older purchases.

The same purchase history is available on a Mac through the App Store’s Account Settings, with the same line-item split between product price and tax collected.

Getting Sales Tax Back

If an in-app purchase does not work or you bought it by mistake, you can request a refund at reportaproblem.apple.com. Sign in, choose “Request a refund,” pick a reason, and select the purchase. Apple usually responds within 48 hours, and approved refunds go back to the original payment method.7Apple. Request a Refund for Apps or Content That You Bought From Apple

Whether the tax comes back with the refund depends on state law. Some states require merchants to refund the full amount including tax; others do not. If your refund does not include the tax, contact Apple or your state tax authority about recovering it. Subscriptions that have already been partly used during a billing cycle may not qualify for a full refund, and Apple evaluates requests case by case.

Schools, nonprofits, and government agencies with valid tax-exempt status can also avoid sales tax on Apple purchases, but the process is not automatic on the App Store. For digital purchases and developer program memberships, an organization can send its order number and tax-exempt certificate to Apple’s sales tax team by email to request a refund of the tax charged.8Apple Developer. Enrollment – Membership – Account Accredited educational institutions may also qualify for a fee waiver on the Apple Developer Program membership. If your organization buys through the App Store often, keep your exemption certificate current and save receipts; contacting Apple early is easier than trying to recover tax after dozens of small purchases.
