The American Express Platinum Card does not cover NEXUS. The US-issued Platinum’s trusted-traveler statement credit applies only to Global Entry and TSA PreCheck, and American Express’s terms expressly exclude NEXUS, SENTRI, FAST, and Privium.1American Express. Expedite Your Travel If you charge a NEXUS application or renewal to a US Amex Platinum expecting automatic reimbursement, the official benefit will not pay it.
What the Credit Actually Covers
The US Platinum provides a statement credit of up to $120 for a Global Entry application fee or up to $85 for a five-year TSA PreCheck membership, available once every four years per eligible card account. The credit applies to the first qualifying fee charged to the card, whether by the primary cardholder or an authorized additional card member.1American Express. Expedite Your Travel No activation is required; paying the fee at the official government site or an authorized enrollment provider triggers the credit, which typically posts within eight weeks.2American Express. Global Entry Credit Card Reimbursement
The credit is issued whether the government approves or denies the application. If you pay for both programs, only the first fee charged is reimbursed, and because Global Entry already includes TSA PreCheck, Amex will not reimburse a separate PreCheck fee for someone who already holds Global Entry.1American Express. How the NEXUS Exclusion Is Written
Amex’s benefit language is direct: “Other program applications including, but not limited to, NEXUS, SENTRI, FAST, and Privium are not eligible for the statement credit benefit.”1American Express. Expedite Your Travel The same exclusion applies to the Business Platinum Card.3Travel Codex. American Express Refuses Credit for SENTRI and NEXUS American Express also reserves the right to reverse any statement credit and to decline future credits if it determines a cardholder has engaged in “abuse, misuse, or gaming” of the benefit.
Why Some NEXUS Charges Have Posted a Credit Anyway
In early 2025, some cardholders reported that NEXUS application fees were triggering the $120 Global Entry statement credit on American Express and Capital One cards. The likely cause is that the NEXUS fee rose to $120 in October 2024, matching the Global Entry fee. Because card issuers rely on merchant-coded transaction data to identify qualifying purchases, the system may not distinguish a $120 NEXUS charge from a $120 Global Entry charge.4Doctor of Credit. NEXUS Now Being Triggered by Capital One, American Express Global Entry Credit
Do not plan around this. The written terms prohibit NEXUS reimbursement, and Amex can reverse credits it identifies as improperly applied. Upgrading an existing Global Entry membership to NEXUS (a $42 charge) does not appear to trigger the credit either.4Doctor of Credit. US Cards That Do Cover NEXUS
If NEXUS reimbursement is what you want, you have other options. The Chase Sapphire Reserve lists NEXUS as an eligible trusted-traveler program alongside Global Entry and TSA PreCheck, with a statement credit of up to $120 once every four years.5Chase. Sapphire Reserve Several other Chase cards, including the United Explorer Card and the United Club Card, also reimburse trusted-traveler fees that include NEXUS.6Chase. What Is the NEXUS Program Charging the NEXUS fee to one of those cards is the clean way to get reimbursed without relying on a coding quirk.
A Note on the Canadian Platinum
The Canadian-issued Amex Platinum is a different product and does cover NEXUS. Canadian Platinum cardholders receive up to $100 CAD every four years toward NEXUS application or renewal fees,7American Express Canada. The Platinum Card Benefits and the Canadian Business Platinum offers the same credit on identical terms.8American Express Canada. Business Platinum Card Benefits With the NEXUS fee now $120 USD after the October 2024 increase,9Federal Register. Increase in the NEXUS Application Fee the Canadian credit no longer covers the full cost. The point for a US cardholder is simply that a Canadian friend’s experience does not transfer: the two Platinum cards have different benefit terms, and only the Canadian one reimburses NEXUS.
