Does Amex Platinum Cover Global Entry? Cycle, Users, Exclusions

Yes, the Amex Platinum Card covers Global Entry. Charge the $120 Global Entry application fee to your Platinum Card and American Express issues an automatic statement credit for the full amount. No enrollment, no activation, no form to submit. The credit is available once every four years per eligible card.1American Express. Expedite Your Travel

How the Credit Posts

The credit applies to the first qualifying trusted traveler program fee charged to the account. American Express says it typically posts within eight weeks of the charge, though it often arrives sooner. If nothing has shown up after eight weeks, call the number on the back of the card.1American Express. Expedite Your Travel

A few conditions can block the credit. The card account has to be active and in good standing when the credit is fulfilled. Fees paid through third-party payment platforms, electronic wallets, or mobile card readers may not register as eligible. And if the application fee is later refunded or canceled, Amex can reverse the credit.1American Express. Expedite Your Travel

Global Entry or TSA PreCheck, Not Both

The credit covers one trusted traveler program per four-year cycle. Pay for TSA PreCheck first and you’ve used your credit; you won’t get a separate one for Global Entry during that window, or the other way around.2American Express. Does Global Entry Include TSA PreCheck

Global Entry is usually the better choice. Membership comes with TSA PreCheck benefits built in: expedited customs screening when you return from abroad, plus access to TSA PreCheck lanes for domestic flights by entering your PASS ID as the Known Traveler Number on airline reservations.3U.S. Customs and Border Protection. So if you have a passport and travel internationally at all, Global Entry gives you both programs for one fee, fully reimbursed.5NerdWallet. TSA PreCheck and Global Entry Explained

The Four-Year Credit Cycle

The credit refreshes every four years per card account. During that window, no second credit will be issued, even if your original application was denied by CBP. If you reapply after a denial, you pay the fee out of pocket.1American Express. Expedite Your Travel

Global Entry membership itself lasts five years, so the credit cycle and the membership cycle don’t quite line up. The gap favors you. CBP lets members renew up to one year before expiration, which means the Amex credit will usually be available again by the time you need to renew.6American Express. Renew Global Entry Membership Renewing before your card expires also gets you a 24-month CBP grace period, so your Global Entry benefits keep working while the renewal is processed.7U.S. Customs and Border Protection. Authorized Users Get Their Own Credit

Each additional card on an eligible Platinum account is entitled to its own Global Entry or TSA PreCheck credit. The fee just has to be charged to that specific additional card.8American Express. Companion Platinum Card

Both tiers of additional cards qualify. The Companion Platinum Card has no annual fee. The Additional Platinum Card costs $195 per year and comes with premium travel perks like airport lounge access and hotel elite status.9Upgraded Points. Adding Authorized Users to the American Express Platinum Card

One quirk worth knowing: the credit is triggered by the charge, not by whose name is on the Global Entry application. An authorized user can pay the fee for someone else’s application on their card and still get reimbursed.10The Points Guy. Why Add Authorized Users to the Amex Platinum

What the Credit Will Not Cover

The benefit applies only to Global Entry and TSA PreCheck. Other trusted traveler and expedited screening programs are explicitly excluded, even the ones run by CBP:

  • NEXUS, the U.S.-Canada program
  • SENTRI, the U.S.-Mexico border crossing program
  • FAST, for commercial drivers
  • Privium, the Netherlands’ airport program

If you want one of these, the application fee comes out of your own pocket.1American Express. Expedite Your Travel

Children Travel Free, So There’s Nothing to Credit

As of October 2024, children under 18 pay no Global Entry application fee if a parent or legal guardian is enrolled in Global Entry or has a pending or conditionally approved application. The parent’s application ID or Known Traveler Number goes on the child’s application to trigger the waiver. Since no fee is charged, there’s nothing for the Amex credit to reimburse. A parent or guardian must attend the child’s interview.11U.S. Customs and Border Protection. Global Entry Frequently Asked Questions12U.S. Customs and Border Protection. Global Entry Eligibility

Other Amex Cards With the Same Credit

The consumer Platinum Card is the most familiar card carrying this benefit, but several other Amex products offer the same $120 Global Entry (or up to $85 TSA PreCheck) credit on the same four-year cycle:

  • Business Platinum Card
  • Consumer and Business Centurion Cards
  • Delta SkyMiles Platinum and Reserve Cards, in both personal and business versions
  • Marriott Bonvoy Brilliant American Express Card
  • Gold and Platinum Corporate Cards and the Corporate Centurion Card

If you hold more than one of these in a household, you can stagger applications across different cards to cover more family members within the same four-year window.1American Express. Expedite Your Travel
