Does AmeriCorps Pay? Living Allowance, Education Award, and Benefits

AmeriCorps does pay, but not as a salary. Full-time members receive a living allowance meant to cover basic expenses during service, plus an education award or cash stipend at the end. For fiscal year 2026, the federal floor for a full-time AmeriCorps State and National living allowance is $20,400, and members who complete 1,700 hours earn a Segal AmeriCorps Education Award of $7,395.1AmeriCorps. 2026 AmeriCorps State and National Notice of Funding Opportunity2Federal Student Aid. 2026-27 Federal Pell Grant Maximum and Minimum Award Amounts Health coverage, childcare help, and student loan forbearance round out the package.

The Living Allowance

The living allowance is a flat annual payment for food, housing, and transportation while you serve. It is authorized under 42 U.S.C. § 12594, which requires programs to pay at least the average annual VISTA subsistence allowance and caps the amount at twice that figure.3Office of the Law Revision Counsel. 42 U.S. Code 12594 – Living Allowances for National Service Participants Programs can pay more than the $20,400 federal floor to reflect local cost of living, but anything above the statutory cap has to come from non-federal funds.

Payments generally arrive biweekly by direct deposit. Part-time terms are prorated based on how long the term runs.3Office of the Law Revision Counsel. 42 U.S. Code 12594 – Living Allowances for National Service Participants

VISTA works a little differently. VISTA members get a subsistence allowance that varies by county to track regional costs. Base biweekly rates start around $957 in lower-cost areas and can exceed $1,300 in higher-cost counties, with periodic adjustments.

One thing the living allowance is not: a market wage. It is set to cover subsistence, and in most parts of the country it sits well below what a comparable job would pay. Members who need more income during service usually plan around that gap before they enroll.

The Segal AmeriCorps Education Award

Complete your service term successfully and you become eligible for the Segal AmeriCorps Education Award, administered by the National Service Trust.4Office of the Law Revision Counsel. 42 USC 12602 – Individuals Eligible to Receive an Educational Award From the Trust5eCFR. 45 CFR 2525.100 – What Is the Amount of an Education Award2Federal Student Aid. 2026-27 Federal Pell Grant Maximum and Minimum Award Amounts

Shorter terms earn a proportional share:

  • Three-quarter time (1,200+ hours): 70% of full-time (~$5,177)
  • Half-time (900+ hours): 50% (~$3,698)
  • Reduced half-time (675+ hours): about 39% (~$2,884)
  • Quarter-time (450+ hours): about 26% (~$1,923)
  • Minimal time (300+ hours): about 21% (~$1,553)
  • Abbreviated time (100+ hours): 5.6% (~$414)

These percentages come from federal regulation and apply across AmeriCorps programs.5eCFR. 45 CFR 2525.100 – What Is the Amount of an Education Award

The Trust pays the money directly to a school or loan servicer. You never see a check. Eligible uses are tuition and fees at Title IV schools and qualified student loan repayment.6My AmeriCorps. What Can the Education Award Be Used to Pay For You have seven years from the date you finish service to spend the award, and it expires after that.4Office of the Law Revision Counsel. 42 USC 12602 – Individuals Eligible to Receive an Educational Award From the Trust

Members who were 55 or older on the first day of their term can transfer an unused award to a child, grandchild, stepchild, step-grandchild, or foster child who is a U.S. citizen, national, or lawful permanent resident, as long as the seven-year window is still open.7eCFR. 45 CFR Part 2525 Subpart F – Transfer of Education Awards Members under 55 cannot transfer the award.

VISTA’s Cash Stipend Alternative

VISTA is the one program that lets you take cash instead of the education award at the end of service. The cash option pays $1,200, or $100 per month over a standard 12-month term.8My AmeriCorps. What Are My End-of-Service Benefit Options Because the education award is worth several times more, the stipend usually only makes sense for members who are confident they will not use tuition or loan repayment within seven years.

You can switch from the education award to the cash stipend any time before the end of your tenth month. You cannot switch the other direction: pick the cash stipend at the start and it is locked in.9AmeriCorps. AmeriCorps VISTA Member Handbook 2025

Other Benefits That Function As Pay

Health Coverage

VISTA and NCCC members receive health coverage at no cost under the AmeriCorps Health Benefits Plan.10My AmeriCorps. Health Care Benefit Plan Overview AmeriCorps State and National programs must provide health coverage or a health care allowance to full-time members, with the specific plan varying by program.3Office of the Law Revision Counsel. 42 U.S. Code 12594 – Living Allowances for National Service Participants Coverage is built around the member and does not usually extend to dependents.

Childcare

Full-time members who are a parent or legal guardian of a child under 13 can qualify for childcare help, subject to income guidelines. State and National grantees must provide childcare through an eligible provider or a childcare allowance, capped at the state’s federally funded childcare rate.11GovInfo. 45 CFR 2522.310 – AmeriCorps Program and Educational Award Programs For VISTA and NCCC, the limit is $400 per child per month or the state maximum, whichever is lower.12My AmeriCorps. Child Care Benefit Overview

Student Loan Forbearance

You can request a mandatory forbearance on qualified federal student loans while you serve, which pauses payments and keeps you out of delinquency. Interest still accrues during forbearance, but if you finish your term and earn an education award, AmeriCorps pays that accrued interest as a separate benefit on top of the award.13My AmeriCorps. Forbearance Overview Two conditions matter: you have to actually request the forbearance, and you have to complete your term. Leave early and the interest benefit is forfeited.

VISTA Workers’ Comp and Life Insurance

VISTA members are covered by the Federal Employees’ Compensation Act for injuries during service, at no cost to the member.14AmeriCorps. FY 2026 Terms and Conditions for AmeriCorps VISTA Program Grants They are also automatically enrolled in a life insurance policy unless they waive it, with benefit amounts of $19,600 under age 60, $9,800 for ages 60–69, and $4,900 for age 70 and older; a small premium comes out of each allowance payment if coverage stays in force.15My AmeriCorps. How AmeriCorps Payments Interact With Public Benefits

If you already receive means-tested benefits, the VISTA living allowance generally will not reduce them. The Domestic Volunteer Service Act requires that VISTA payments not count against eligibility for federal, state, or local assistance programs, and it protects members from being penalized for not seeking outside work while serving.9AmeriCorps. AmeriCorps VISTA Member Handbook 2025

  • Federal housing assistance: AmeriCorps payments are excluded from income for Section 8 and other federally subsidized housing.9AmeriCorps. AmeriCorps VISTA Member Handbook 2025
  • SNAP and similar programs: the living allowance is disregarded, but you may need to give the benefits agency an Income Disregard Letter and identify yourself as serving under the Domestic Volunteer Service Act.16My AmeriCorps. Income Disregard (Public Benefits) Overview
  • TANF cash assistance: the allowance is disregarded for eligibility, but months of service may still count against your state’s lifetime TANF time limits. Check with your state or county office before enrolling.9AmeriCorps. AmeriCorps VISTA Member Handbook 2025

Taxes On What AmeriCorps Pays You

The living allowance is taxable. You will get a W-2 each year showing what you earned and any federal income tax withheld. VISTA members do not have FICA (Social Security and Medicare) withheld, which slightly increases each payment but also means those months do not build Social Security credits. State and National members may have FICA withheld depending on program structure. Because the allowance is modest, many members owe little or no federal income tax, and VISTA members may qualify for the Earned Income Tax Credit since the allowance counts as earned income for EITC.9AmeriCorps. AmeriCorps VISTA Member Handbook 2025

The Segal Education Award is also taxable, but in the calendar year the Trust actually pays your school or loan servicer, not the year you finished service. If your education award payments and interest payments together exceed $600 in a year, you will get a Form 1099-MISC, reported on Schedule 1 of Form 1040 as other income.17Internal Revenue Service. 1099 MISC, Independent Contractors, and Self-Employed 5 Nothing is withheld from the payment, so budget for the tax bill.
