Does Allianz Cover Medical Evacuation? Limits, Rules, and Exclusions

Allianz travel insurance does cover medical evacuation. The benefit, listed in policies as Emergency Medical Transportation, appears on nearly every single-trip (OneTrip) and annual (AllTrips) plan, with limits that run from $50,000 on the entry-level plan up to $1 million on the top tier. Two conditions govern the payout: Allianz’s assistance team must authorize the transport in advance, and the destination is the nearest appropriate medical facility, not a hospital of the patient’s choosing.1Allianz Travel Insurance. Evacuation Limits by Plan

The dollar cap on evacuation depends entirely on which plan you bought. Single-trip plans:

  • OneTrip Basic: up to $50,000
  • OneTrip Prime: up to $500,000
  • OneTrip Premier: up to $1,000,000
  • OneTrip Emergency Medical: up to $250,000

Annual plans, with the limit applied per insured, per trip:

  • AllTrips Basic: $100,000
  • AllTrips Prime: $100,000
  • AllTrips Executive: $250,000
  • AllTrips Premier: $500,000

OneTrip Premier carries the highest evacuation limit at $1 million and pairs it with up to $75,000 in emergency medical treatment coverage.2U.S. News & World Report. Allianz Travel Insurance OneTrip Emergency Medical is a stripped-down plan built around medical coverage rather than trip cancellation, and it provides $250,000 for transport.3Allianz Travel Insurance. OneTrip Emergency Medical Plan AllTrips Executive sits at $250,000 per insured, per trip.4Allianz Travel Insurance. AllTrips Executive Plan

These figures are the maximum paid for a single evacuation event. Sublimits and daily maximums can apply and vary by state, so the Declarations of Coverage or Letter of Confirmation that came with your policy is the controlling document for exact figures.1Allianz Travel Insurance. When the Benefit Applies

The trigger is a covered illness or injury during the trip, combined with a determination by Allianz’s medical team that local facilities cannot provide appropriate care. If both are met, the plan pays to move the patient to the nearest appropriate facility, which may be in another city or another country.1Allianz Travel Insurance. Emergency Medical Transportation

The benefit also covers transport home once the patient is medically stable, with a medical escort if needed. If the insured is hospitalized for more than 48 hours, the plan can arrange and pay for a friend or family member to travel to the bedside.1Allianz Travel Insurance. Emergency Medical Transportation

The mode of transport is chosen by Allianz’s assistance team and the attending physician based on the patient’s condition. Options include a medevac helicopter from a remote location, a stretcher configuration on a commercial flight with a nurse, a dedicated air ambulance, or a ground ambulance. The policyholder does not choose the method.5Allianz Travel Insurance. Emergency Transportation Costs

You Must Call Allianz Before Transport Is Arranged

Advance authorization is the single most consequential rule in the benefit. Before anyone arranges transport, the policyholder or someone acting for them has to reach Allianz Partners on the 24/7 assistance line at 1-866-884-3556.1Allianz Travel Insurance. Emergency Medical Transportation If transport is arranged without that call, Allianz will reimburse only what it would have paid had it handled the arrangements itself.6Rick Steves Travel Forum. Once contacted, the assistance team assesses whether local facilities can handle the patient’s condition, identifies the receiving facility, and arranges transport. For the return home, the treating doctor must confirm the patient is stable to travel. If the destination is a U.S. facility, that facility must agree to accept the patient and be approved by Allianz’s medical director for continued care.6Rick Steves Travel Forum. In some cases the call for evacuation requires agreement between Allianz’s consulting physician and the local attending physician. The decision is a medical one made by Allianz’s team, not the patient.1Allianz Travel Insurance. Emergency Medical Transportation

Nearest Appropriate Facility, Not Hospital of Choice

Allianz pays to get the patient to the nearest appropriate facility. That is a different model from standalone air ambulance memberships, which focus on moving a member to a hospital of their choice. Hospital-of-choice transport can run up to $30,000 domestically and $180,000 internationally if paid out of pocket.7Medjet. Exclusions That Cancel the Benefit

Pre-Existing Conditions

U.S. Allianz plans define a pre-existing condition as any illness or injury that was being treated, sought treatment for, or showed symptoms on the purchase date or in the 120 days before.8Allianz Travel Insurance. Existing Medical Condition A flare of such a condition on the trip is not covered, which means an evacuation driven by it is not covered either.

Several plans offer a waiver that removes the exclusion. To qualify, the policy generally must be bought within 14 days of the first trip payment or deposit, the traveler must be a U.S. resident, they must be medically able to travel on the purchase date, and the full non-refundable trip cost must be insured. The waiver is available on OneTrip Basic, Prime, Premier, and Emergency Medical, and on AllTrips Prime, Executive, and Premier.8Allianz Travel Insurance. Existing Medical Condition

Adventure Sports and High-Risk Activities

Losses from extreme and high-risk activities are excluded. Bungee jumping is out. Skiing and snowboarding are covered on marked trails but not off-trail, in heli-skiing areas, or in zones a resort has flagged unsafe. Recreational scuba is covered, but diving below 60 feet or without a dive master is excluded, and diving past 100 feet is classified as ultra-high-risk and excluded entirely.9Allianz Travel Insurance. Adventure Vacation Travel Insurance Mountain climbing requiring crampons, ice axes, or carabiners is excluded.10Allianz Assistance Canada. War, Civil Unrest, and Political Evacuation

Allianz plans do not pay for losses from war (declared or not), acts of war, civil disorder, government travel warnings, or travel against government orders.12Allianz Travel Insurance. Unforeseen Event Coverage Political and security evacuations are not covered. During the Middle East conflict that began in February 2026, Allianz stated its assistance services in the region “may be substantially limited” and directed travelers needing extraction to contact the nearest U.S. embassy or the State Department.13Allianz Travel Insurance. War in Middle East and Surrounding Region Medical evacuation can still be attempted in a conflict zone if medically appropriate, but only subject to safety and transport availability, and any temporary accommodations the company offers do not waive the war exclusion.14Allianz Partners. Transport You Arrange Yourself

Transport that is not pre-authorized and arranged by Allianz is either not covered or capped at the amount Allianz would have paid. Under the Canadian policy, choosing a provider other than one suggested by Allianz can leave the policyholder responsible for 30% of their medical expenses.10Allianz Assistance Canada. COVID-19 and Other Epidemics

Evacuation for COVID-19 depends on whether your plan carries the Epidemic Coverage Endorsement. For plans purchased on or after March 6, 2021, the endorsement may be included, adding epidemic-related reasons to trip cancellation, trip interruption, emergency medical care, and emergency transportation benefits.15Allianz Travel Insurance. COVID-19 FAQ With the endorsement in place, if a traveler becomes seriously ill with COVID-19, Allianz’s medical team consults with the local doctor and evacuates if local care is inadequate. Not all plans or states include the endorsement, so check the Declarations of Coverage or Letter of Confirmation to confirm.1Allianz Travel Insurance. Emergency Medical Transportation

Evacuations From Cruise Ships

Allianz confirms its travel insurance covers medical evacuation from cruise ships, stating that “if you suffer a medical crisis on board, travel insurance can cover your evacuation and emergency medical care.”16Allianz Travel Insurance. Cruise Travel Insurance The same authorization process, assistance hotline, and exclusions apply.

Repatriation After Treatment

Evacuation does not end at the receiving hospital. Once the patient is stable, Allianz plans cover medically necessary transport home, which can be anything from a commercial airline ticket to a private air ambulance with a medical escort. Repatriation costs in difficult cases can reach $1 million.17Allianz Travel Insurance.
