Using Afterpay does not affect your credit score in the ordinary course. The company runs only a soft credit inquiry when you sign up or check out, and soft inquiries are invisible to other lenders and have no effect on your score.1TransUnion. What Is a Soft Inquiry On-time Afterpay payments are not reported to the credit bureaus either, so steady use will not build your credit. The one way Afterpay can hurt your score is if you stop paying and the balance is sent to collections, where it can sit on your credit file for up to seven years.
The Soft Credit Check at Signup and Checkout
Afterpay pulls your credit when you create an account and again when you start a new purchase, but each pull is a soft inquiry. Soft inquiries show up only on the version of your credit report that you see; other lenders, landlords, and employers reviewing your file will not see them, and your score does not move.1TransUnion. What Is a Soft Inquiry A hard inquiry, by contrast, is the type attached to most traditional credit applications and can drop your score a few points while staying visible to creditors for up to two years.2Equifax. Hard Inquiry vs Soft Inquiry: Whats the Difference?
The Fair Credit Reporting Act permits a company to pull your file when you have initiated a credit transaction with it, which is the basis Afterpay uses at checkout.3Office of the Law Revision Counsel. 15 USC 1681b – Permissible Purposes of Consumer Reports Because the pull is soft, it does not create the permanent record that a loan or credit card application would.
On-Time Payments Will Not Build Your Score
Afterpay does not report payment activity to Equifax, Experian, or TransUnion. The company has said it will not start reporting until there is evidence that buy-now-pay-later data helps rather than hurts customers’ credit scores.4Afterpay Help Center. Does Afterpay Conduct Credit Checks? Even if you complete dozens of orders on time over several years, none of that history will appear on your credit report.
The wider BNPL industry is still working out how this data fits into the credit system. Equifax has built a framework for reporting BNPL loans, and some other providers have started reporting to one or more bureaus.5Equifax. What is Afterpay, Klarna and Affirm? How Buy Now, Pay Later Impacts Your Credit Afterpay has not adopted this approach for its U.S. customers. If building credit is your goal, Afterpay is not a tool that will get you there.
How Missed Payments Can Hurt Your Score
A missed Afterpay payment does not go straight to your credit report. The first consequence is a late fee, and the fees are capped by order size. For orders of $40 or less, Afterpay can charge a single late fee of up to 25% of the order value. For orders over $40, there is an initial $10 late fee, plus a further $7 if the payment is still unpaid seven days later; total late fees per order are capped at 25% of the order value or $68, whichever is lower. Afterpay also pauses your account for new purchases while anything is overdue.
If you stop paying altogether, Afterpay works on collecting the balance internally for roughly 60 to 90 days. After that, it may transfer the unpaid balance to a third-party collection agency, which then takes over the account.
Collection agencies in the U.S. have to follow the Fair Debt Collection Practices Act, which limits how and when they can contact you and bars harassment and deceptive practices.6Consumer Financial Protection Bureau. What Laws Limit What Debt Collectors Can Say or Do? Before a collector reports the debt to a credit bureau, it must first speak with you about it by phone or in person, or send you a written or electronic notice and wait at least 14 days for any undeliverability notification.7FDIC. VII-3 Fair Debt Collection Practices Act
Once a collection item lands on your credit report, it can stay there for up to seven years. The clock starts 180 days after the date you first became delinquent on the original Afterpay order, not from the date the debt moved to collections.8Office of the Law Revision Counsel. 15 USC 1681c – Requirements Relating to Information Contained in Consumer Reports An unpaid order of $50 or $100 can leave a mark that outlasts the debt itself by years.
Pay Monthly Works the Same Way at Approval
Afterpay also offers Pay Monthly, a longer-term option that spreads a purchase over 3, 6, 12, or 24 months depending on the order and merchant. Unlike the standard Pay in 4, Pay Monthly charges an annual percentage rate ranging from 0% to 35.99% based on your eligibility and the merchant.9Afterpay. Pay Monthly
Pay Monthly uses a soft credit check during approval, so applying for it will not affect your score.10Afterpay. How Afterpay’s Pay Monthly Works The same back-end risk applies, though: if you fall far enough behind that the balance is sent to collections, it can end up on your credit report under the same rules described above.
One Side Effect to Watch
Afterpay charges no interest on its standard Pay in 4 product, but the payment method you link matters. If you set Afterpay to draw from a traditional credit card and you carry a balance on that card, your card issuer may charge its normal interest on each installment as it posts. That is a cost of the underlying card, not of Afterpay, and it has no direct effect on your credit score. Missing payments on that credit card, however, is a separate problem that your card issuer will report to the bureaus in the usual way.
