Does Afterpay Have Interest? Pay-in-4 vs. Pay Monthly APR

Afterpay’s Pay-in-4 plan does not charge interest: you pay the sticker price split into four installments over about six weeks at 0% APR. Its longer Pay Monthly plans are different — those can carry an APR anywhere from 0% to 35.99%, depending on your creditworthiness and the terms of the specific purchase. So whether Afterpay charges interest depends entirely on which product you use at checkout.1Afterpay. Installment Agreement – USA

Pay-in-4 Is Interest-Free

With Pay-in-4, the total purchase price is divided into four equal payments. You pay 25% at checkout, and the remaining three payments are automatically charged to your linked debit or credit card every two weeks. The balance is paid off in roughly six weeks, and no interest accrues at any point in that window.1Afterpay. Installment Agreement – USA Pay-in-4 is available for purchases up to $5,000, both online and in stores.

There is a regulatory reason the plan looks so simple. Under Regulation Z, which implements the Truth in Lending Act, a credit product only triggers full disclosure obligations when it involves more than four installments or carries a finance charge. Pay-in-4 has exactly four installments and no finance charge, so it sits below that threshold.2eCFR. 12 CFR Part 226 – Truth in Lending (Regulation Z) Provided every payment lands on time, the total cost of your purchase matches the price on the tag.

Pay Monthly Can Charge Up to 35.99% APR

For larger purchases, Afterpay offers a Pay Monthly option with terms of 3, 6, 12, or 24 months. Purchases must be at least $100 to qualify, and orders above $400 may unlock the longer 24-month terms depending on the merchant and order value.3Afterpay. Pay Monthly These plans can carry interest at an APR anywhere from 0% to 35.99%. The rate you actually receive depends on your creditworthiness and the underwriting criteria for that particular transaction.

A soft credit check is typically performed during the application, which does not affect your credit score. Interest accrues daily on the outstanding principal balance, so the total amount you repay will generally exceed the purchase price.3Afterpay. Pay Monthly Afterpay shows the full cost breakdown, including the total interest, before you finalize the purchase, so you can compare it against other financing options.

No Origination Fees, No Prepayment Penalty

Pay Monthly plans do not carry origination fees or late fees. Interest is the only cost beyond the purchase price itself. You can pay the balance off early, in full or in part, without any prepayment penalty.1Afterpay. Installment Agreement – USA Because interest accrues daily on the principal, paying ahead of schedule reduces both the balance and the interest that would have accrued on it, which can meaningfully lower your total cost.

Late Fees Apply to Pay-in-4, Not Pay Monthly

Interest is not the only way a buy-now-pay-later plan can cost you extra. On Pay-in-4, missed payments carry late fees. When an automated payment fails, Afterpay does not charge a penalty right away. You have a grace period of about 10 days from the original due date to update your payment method or settle the balance before a late fee is assessed.4Afterpay. Responsible Spending

If the installment is still unpaid after the grace period, Afterpay charges a late fee. For orders over $40, an initial fee of roughly $8 applies, followed by a second fee of about $8 if the installment remains unpaid seven days later. For orders of $40 or less, only a single smaller fee applies. Total late fees on any individual order are capped at 25% of the original purchase price.4Afterpay. Responsible Spending On a $40 order, that means total late fees could not exceed $10.

A missed payment also pauses your account. Afterpay blocks new purchases until the overdue balance is brought current, and your spending limit may drop.5Afterpay. I Missed a Payment. What Happens to My Account? If a balance stays overdue for an extended period, Afterpay may permanently restrict or close your account, and prolonged nonpayment can be referred to a third-party collection agency, which could hurt your credit even though Afterpay itself does not normally report to the credit bureaus.6Afterpay.
