Afterpay late fees run up to $8 per missed installment on the standard Pay in 4 plan, and they only apply after a grace period of about 10 days past the due date. Total late fees on any single order are capped at 25% of the original purchase price. Pay on time and the service costs nothing; fall behind and you face fees, a frozen account, and the possibility of collections.
When a Late Fee Actually Hits Your Account
Pay in 4 splits your purchase into four equal payments. The first is charged at checkout, and the other three come out of your linked card every two weeks. Miss one and Afterpay doesn’t charge you immediately. You get roughly 10 days before a late fee is assessed.1Afterpay. Responsible Spending The specific window on your order may differ, so check the dates shown in your account.
During that window, Afterpay sends reminders about the upcoming due date and alerts you if a payment attempt fails. The fee only posts after the grace period ends without a successful payment. A short bank shortfall on the exact due date won’t automatically cost you extra.
How Much You’ll Pay
For U.S. customers, Afterpay charges up to $8 for each missed installment, and only one late fee per installment, so the same missed payment won’t be penalized twice.2Afterpay. Is There a Cost to Using Afterpay?1Afterpay. Responsible Spending
Total late fees on any single order are capped at 25% of the original purchase price.2Afterpay. Is There a Cost to Using Afterpay? In practice:
- On a $20 order, total late fees can’t exceed $5, even if every installment is missed.
- On an $80 order, the cap is $20.
- On a $200 order, the cap is $50.
Because each fee tops out at $8 and only three of the four installments can go late (the first is paid at checkout), the absolute ceiling on late fees for any order is $24. The 25% cap brings that lower on smaller purchases.
What Else a Missed Payment Triggers
When you miss a payment, Afterpay freezes your account. You can’t make new purchases or use any remaining spending limit until the overdue installment and its late fees are paid in full.3Afterpay. Installment Agreement – USA The freeze is automatic.
Once you clear the past-due balance, purchasing ability is typically restored, though your internal spending limit may drop. Repeated late payments can lead to permanently reduced limits or account closure.
Bank Overdraft Fees Are a Separate Cost
One expense that catches people off guard has nothing to do with Afterpay’s fee schedule. When Afterpay tries to charge your card and the account is short, your bank may charge an overdraft or insufficient-funds fee. Afterpay’s agreement notes that if a charge fails, you “may be charged fees by your financial institution” that Afterpay doesn’t control.4Afterpay. Recurring Payment Authorization for Afterpay-Branded Products Bank fees of $25 to $35 per failed transaction are common and can exceed the late fee itself.
To reduce that risk, make sure the linked account has enough funds before each due date. You can also switch to a card that won’t trigger overdraft charges, such as a prepaid debit card, by updating your payment method in the app before the next installment.
Asking Afterpay to Waive the Fee
If you’re dealing with something like illness, a natural disaster, domestic violence, or a family crisis, Afterpay’s hardship program may waive late fees or restructure your payments.5Afterpay. What Is Financial Hardship? You apply through a secure form on Afterpay’s website, and a dedicated team reviews your situation. Possible adjustments include:
- Rescheduling due dates to a later timeline.
- Removing late fees already charged.
- Restructuring the remaining balance into more manageable amounts.
Afterpay defines financial hardship as an unplanned, life-changing event beyond your control. Simply running low on funds isn’t enough on its own.5Afterpay. What Is Financial Hardship? Reaching out before you miss a payment gives you the best chance of avoiding the fee entirely.
If the Balance Stays Unpaid
As of 2026, Afterpay doesn’t report payment history to U.S. credit bureaus, on-time or late. The company has said it won’t start reporting until it sees evidence that buy-now-pay-later data will help rather than hurt customers’ scores.6Afterpay. Does Afterpay Conduct Credit Checks? Signing up uses only a soft credit pull, so opening an account won’t affect your score either.
A single missed payment won’t show up on your credit report on its own. Things change if the balance stays unpaid. Afterpay’s installment agreement lets the company assign your debt to a third-party collection agency or sell it outright, without needing your consent.3Afterpay. Installment Agreement – USA Once a collector holds the debt, it becomes a reportable item and can damage your credit even if the original balance was small. Afterpay can also accelerate the full remaining balance, so the entire unpaid amount becomes due at once rather than in future installments.
Pay Monthly Works Differently
The rules above cover Pay in 4. Afterpay’s Pay Monthly option, used for larger purchases, doesn’t charge late fees at all, but it may charge interest at an APR ranging from 0% to 35.99%.7Afterpay. How Afterpay’s Pay Monthly Works If you’re comparing the two, Pay in 4 never charges interest but does charge late fees; Pay Monthly can charge interest but won’t penalize a missed payment with a fee.
