Does Affirm Charge Late Fees? Credit Impact and Consequences

Affirm does not charge late fees on any of its payment plans, including Pay in 4 and longer-term monthly installments.1Affirm Help Center. Late Payments That zero-fee promise is written into the company’s terms of service.2Affirm. Terms of Service A missed payment still costs you, though. Interest keeps running on most loans, your credit score can drop, and an unpaid balance can eventually be handed to a collection agency.

What a Missed Payment Actually Costs You

You will not see a flat $25 or $40 penalty added to your balance the way a credit card issuer would apply one. The checkout disclosure shows your total cost up front, and that number does not go up because a payment failed.2Affirm. Terms of Service

Two other costs can still land, though. If Affirm tries to auto-debit your bank account and the money isn’t there, your bank may charge its own non-sufficient funds or overdraft fee. Affirm has no control over that charge.

The second cost is interest. Affirm loans carry a fixed APR between 0% and 36%, set at checkout based on your credit and the term you pick. Pay in 4 plans always carry 0% APR.3Affirm Holdings, Inc. Affirm Updates Underwriting With Enhanced Signals to Better Reflect On an interest-bearing plan, interest accrues daily on your outstanding principal. When you miss a payment, that principal stays higher for longer, so more daily interest piles up over the life of the loan. It isn’t a fee. It’s the ordinary cost of borrowing money for extra days. On a 0% Pay in 4 plan, this piece doesn’t apply, but the credit and account consequences below still do.

When Affirm Reports Late Payments to Credit Bureaus

Payments that go more than 30 days past due may be reported as late to the credit bureaus.1Affirm Help Center. Late Payments A single late-payment notation can drop your score by dozens of points and can stay on your credit report for up to seven years, affecting your ability to qualify for mortgages, auto loans, and other credit long after the Affirm plan is closed.

This matters more now than it used to. Starting April 1, 2025, Affirm reports all payment activity, including on-time, late, and missed payments, to Experian for every pay-over-time product, Pay in 4 included.4Affirm Holdings, Inc. Affirm Expands Credit Reporting With Experian to Include All Pay-Over-Time Products Starting May 1, 2025, the same reporting extends to TransUnion.5Affirm Holdings, Inc. Affirm Expands Credit Reporting With TransUnion to All Pay-Over-Time Products Under the earlier policy, Pay in 4 plans generally weren’t sent to the bureaus. That is no longer true. Every Affirm plan you open now appears on your Experian and TransUnion files.6Affirm Help Center. Understanding Credit Reporting Affirm has not publicly announced reporting to Equifax.

What Happens If You Keep Missing Payments

If you fall behind and don’t catch up, Affirm follows a gradual escalation that can end with your debt at a third-party collector.

  • Right after a missed payment, Affirm will try to contact you and let you log in to reschedule. No late fee is added.1Affirm Help Center. Late Payments
  • Once you cross 30 days past due, the late payment may be reported to Experian and TransUnion, which can damage your credit score.
  • At 120 days past due, Affirm may charge off the loan, meaning it writes the balance off as a loss. Once charged off, the debt can be sent to an outside collection agency at any time.7Affirm Help Center. Collections and Charged-Off Payment Plans
  • After the referral, you can no longer pay Affirm directly. You deal with the collection agency.7Affirm Help Center. Collections and Charged-Off Payment Plans

A charge-off is one of the most damaging entries a credit report can carry and can stay visible to lenders for seven years. If Affirm or a collector later cancels or forgives the remaining balance, any forgiven amount of $600 or more triggers an IRS Form 1099-C, and the canceled debt counts as taxable income on your federal return.8Internal Revenue Service. Effect on Your Future Affirm Purchases

Consequences show up inside Affirm’s own app well before a loan reaches collections. Affirm’s underwriting evaluates every new purchase request, and a history of missed or late payments can shrink your internal spending limit or lead to an outright denial.1Affirm Help Center. Late Payments While any balance is overdue, Affirm may block you from opening new plans at all.2Affirm. Terms of Service

Paying off the overdue amount doesn’t automatically restore your buying power. Affirm’s terms don’t publish a fixed timeline or set of criteria for lifting restrictions; the decision is made by internal underwriting case by case. Consistent on-time payments over time are the most reliable way back.

Refunds and Disputes Work Separately

A dispute is a separate track from a late payment, and it’s worth knowing the boundary. If a purchase never arrived or was significantly different from what was described, you can open a dispute with Affirm. Since July 2024, you are not required to keep paying the disputed amount while the investigation is open, and Affirm withholds those funds until the matter is resolved.9Affirm US (English) Help Center. Dispute Resolution Policy Simply missing a payment because you are unhappy with the purchase, without opening a dispute, still counts as a missed payment for credit-reporting and collections purposes.

Refunds have a similar catch. If a merchant reverses the purchase, interest you already paid does not come back. Affirm applies your payments to accrued interest first and to principal second, so the interest portion is treated as earned by the lender. The remaining principal is adjusted for the refund, but the borrowing cost you have already covered stays with Affirm.
