Yes, AAA does cover towing from home. If your car is sitting in the driveway or garage and won’t start or can’t be safely driven, you can call AAA just as you would from the side of a highway, and a technician will come out to either fix the problem on the spot or tow the vehicle to a destination you choose. The service treats a home breakdown the same as any other.1AAA Mountain West Group. Tow Truck Service
The important qualifiers are how far AAA will tow for free, how many calls you get per year, and what kinds of situations fall outside the program. Those answers depend on your membership tier and your regional club.
The Car Has to Be Actually Disabled
AAA roadside assistance is built around one condition: the vehicle can’t be driven. A dead battery, a flat tire, an engine that won’t turn over, a mechanical failure — any of those qualifies, and a technician will come to your address to diagnose it. If they can’t get the car running, they’ll tow it.1AAA Mountain West Group. Tow Truck Service
What AAA won’t do is move a working car. The terms call out “tows of convenience” and non-emergency tows as excluded.2AAA Washington. Terms and Conditions Shifting a running vehicle from one house to another isn’t covered either. The program is emergency roadside service, not a moving service.
Service also has to be requested at the time of the breakdown. AAA doesn’t schedule tows in advance, and you need to be present with the vehicle when the technician arrives.1AAA Mountain West Group. Tow Truck Service3AAA Club Alliance. Rules of the Road
How Far AAA Will Tow by Membership Tier
The free mileage included with a tow depends entirely on which tier you have:
- Classic (or Basic): up to 5 miles per tow, or to the nearest AAA Approved Auto Repair facility. Some regional clubs set it a little differently — AAA Auto Club Enterprises offers 7 miles, and AAA Oregon includes 3 miles within Oregon.4AAA Mountain West Group. - Plus: up to 100 miles per tow.4AAA Mountain West Group. AAA Membership
- Premier: one tow per year up to 200 miles, with remaining tows covered up to 100 miles each.4AAA Mountain West Group. AAA Membership
If the tow goes past the free mileage, you pay for the extra distance directly to the driver. AAA Auto Club Group charges $7.00 per additional mile, and other clubs report rates between $5 and $15 per mile depending on the state.6AAA Auto Club Group. Roadside Towing7AAA Mountain West Group. For a home breakdown, the 5-mile Classic cap is worth weighing. Five miles may not reach your usual mechanic, and in rural areas it may not reach any shop at all. One tow past the free mileage will often cost more than the price difference between tiers.
Where the Tow Can Go
You choose the destination. AAA will take the vehicle to a repair shop, tire shop, gas station, EV charging station, or back to your home from somewhere else, as long as it’s within your plan’s mileage limit.1AAA Mountain West Group. Tow Truck Service Classic members are more restricted: coverage is typically to the nearest AAA Approved Auto Repair facility or within the short mileage cap, whichever applies.8AAA Mountain West Group. Membership Terms and Conditions
You get one tow per breakdown. If the shop can’t fix the problem and the car needs to move again, that counts as a separate service call, and a second tow for the same breakdown on the same day comes with a fee.1AAA Mountain West Group. Tow Truck Service
Annual Call Limits
Every tow counts against your yearly service allowance. Primary members typically get four roadside calls per membership year, and that pool covers everything — tows, jump starts, tire changes, fuel deliveries, lockouts, mechanical aid.9AAA Mountain West Group. Emergency Road Services Limit A battery jump in your driveway uses one of the same four calls a highway tow would.
Associate or household members may get fewer. AAA Western and Central New York, for example, gives household members two calls a year while primary members get four. AAA Hoosier gives all members four regardless of status.10AAA Western and Central New York. Roadside Assistance Call Limits11AAA Hoosier. Roadside Assistance Limits
After you’ve used your calls, you can still request service, but you’ll pay a “special member rate” that’s generally lower than non-member pricing.10AAA Western and Central New York. Roadside Assistance Call Limits
Home Breakdowns AAA Won’t Tow
Several home situations fall outside the program. Knowing them before you call saves a wasted phone tree.
- Vehicles acquired already broken. If a car was purchased, inherited, or otherwise obtained in a non-running state, AAA won’t tow it.8AAA Mountain West Group. Membership Terms and Conditions
- Long-term inoperable vehicles. A car that has been sitting non-functional for an extended period is evaluated case by case, and service may be denied.2AAA Washington. Terms and Conditions
- Moves between residences. Towing a working car from one home to another is explicitly excluded.8AAA Mountain West Group. Membership Terms and Conditions
- Commercial vehicles. Box trucks, taxicabs, limousines, flatbeds, and landscaping vehicles are ineligible.2AAA Washington. Terms and Conditions
- Tows to storage, auction, impound, or salvage. AAA won’t deliver a vehicle to any of those destinations.2AAA Washington. Terms and Conditions
- Inaccessible locations. If the tow truck can’t safely reach the vehicle — behind a barricade, in a field, down an unpaved road — service may be refused or limited.8AAA Mountain West Group. Membership Terms and Conditions
Pre-existing breakdowns are treated separately as well: if the car was already disabled before you joined or upgraded, service is restricted to Basic-level benefits regardless of what tier you now hold.12AAA Western and Central New York. Waiting Period for New Members
If You Just Joined
Most clubs impose a 48-hour waiting period after you sign up before roadside benefits are active. You can waive it by paying a one-time $75 fee at the time of service, and that fee may be dropped in safety-critical situations.13AAA Mountain West Group. Waiting Period for New Members
Upgrading from Classic to Plus or Premier triggers its own waiting period of 7 to 10 days before the longer towing distances take effect. During that window, you’ll receive Classic-level service only.13AAA Mountain West Group. Waiting Period for New Members
How to Call for the Tow
Requesting a tow from your driveway works the same as calling from anywhere else. Three options:
- Phone: 1-800-222-4357 (1-800-AAA-HELP), 24/7.14AAA Club Alliance. Roadside Assistance
- The AAA mobile app, which uses GPS and gives you real-time tracking of the technician.15AAA Auto Club Group. How to Request AAA Roadside Assistance
- Online at AAA.com.
Have your membership number, the vehicle’s make, model, color, and license plate, and the address where you want the car taken. When the driver arrives, you’ll need to show your membership card (physical or digital) and a valid photo ID.15AAA Auto Club Group. How to Request AAA Roadside Assistance
Before dispatching the tow, the technician will usually try to resolve the issue in place. On-site services include battery testing and replacement, jump starts, minor mechanical first aid like cleaning corroded terminals or tightening connections, flat tire changes using your spare, and fuel delivery.16AAA Mountain West Group. Reimbursement If You Used Another Tow Company
If AAA service wasn’t available and you paid for a non-AAA tow out of pocket, you can request reimbursement. AAA considers these claims when its own service “was not available,” and the member is expected to have tried to reach AAA first.19AAA Northeast. Reimbursement Form
The payout is capped at what AAA would have paid to provide the service itself, based on prevailing commercial rates in your area and adjusted for your membership tier. You’ll need to submit an original itemized receipt — credit card slips alone don’t qualify — within 30 to 60 days depending on your club. If AAA service was in fact available and you simply chose a different tow, any reimbursement will be reduced.20AAA Club Alliance. Road Service Reimbursement Request21AAA Western and Central New York. Check Your Regional Club
AAA operates through more than 40 regional clubs, each setting its own pricing and specific service terms.22SmartFinancial. AAA Membership The three-tier structure and the broad rules above hold up across the country, but the numbers — mileage caps at Classic, per-mile overage charges, associate call limits, annual dues — move around. Before you rely on a specific figure, confirm it with the club that administers your membership.
