Does a US Green Card Holder Need a Visa for the UK?

Whether a U.S. Green Card holder needs a visa for the UK depends on the passport in your hand, not the card in your wallet. The UK sets entry rules by citizenship. If your passport belongs to a visa-national country, you need a Standard Visitor Visa before you fly. If it belongs to a non-visa national country, you skip the visa but still need a UK Electronic Travel Authorisation, which became mandatory on 25 February 2026.¹

Your Passport Decides, Not Your Green Card

The UK Home Office splits travelers into visa nationals and non-visa nationals based on citizenship alone. Holding a Green Card, paying U.S. taxes, or having lived in the United States for decades does not shift you from one group to the other. An Indian citizen who has been a U.S. permanent resident for twenty years is still a visa national in the UK’s system. A Japanese citizen who received a Green Card last month is still a non-visa national.²

Non-visa nationals can visit the UK for up to six months without a visa. Visa nationals must apply for and receive a Standard Visitor Visa first. There is no middle route. Arriving without the right documentation means you will not board your flight, and if you reach the UK border anyway, you face removal.³ To confirm which group your nationality is in, check the UK’s regularly updated visa requirements list.²

If Your Passport Is From a Non-Visa National Country: You Need an ETA

Since 25 February 2026, non-visa nationals from 85 countries, including the United States, Canada, and France, must obtain a UK Electronic Travel Authorisation before traveling.¹

The ETA costs £16. It is valid for multiple trips over two years or until your passport expires, whichever comes first, and it allows stays of up to six months per visit. You apply online through GOV.UK. The UK government has said the fee will rise to £20 in the future, but no date has been set.⁴

For Green Card holders, the passport you’re traveling on decides this. If that passport is from a non-visa national country, an ETA is what you need, not a visa. Travelers who arrive without one are turned away at the border.

If Your Passport Is From a Visa National Country: You Need a Standard Visitor Visa

Your Green Card changes nothing about the visa requirement here. You must apply for a Standard Visitor Visa before traveling to the UK for tourism, family visits, or business. The visa allows stays of up to six months.⁵

The Green Card does help in one way: it strengthens the application. Immigration officers assess whether you are likely to leave the UK at the end of your visit, and U.S. permanent residency, together with a stable job, property, and bank accounts in the United States, is strong evidence of ties pulling you back. Treat the Green Card as supporting evidence, not a substitute for the visa itself.

How to Apply

The application starts on GOV.UK, where you complete a digital form covering your personal history, employment, travel plans, and any prior immigration issues. You will list your travel dates and the address where you plan to stay. The form asks about previous visa refusals or overstays in any country, so be thorough and honest.⁵

After submitting, you schedule a biometrics appointment at a VFS Global center, where staff collect your fingerprints and a digital photograph. You submit your passport and supporting documents at the appointment or by mail to a processing hub.

Documents to Prepare

A valid passport covering the full duration of your planned stay.
Your physical U.S. Permanent Resident Card.
Financial documents showing you can cover the trip without relying on public assistance.
Travel itinerary, including flight bookings and accommodation details.

The UK’s financial guidance sets no fixed dollar threshold and requires no fixed number of months of statements. Caseworkers look at the overall picture: your income, savings, the cost of your trip, and whether you can realistically support yourself. Bank statements are the most common evidence, but property records, employment letters, and pension statements also count.⁶

Be Honest on the Form

Any inconsistency between your application and your documents invites scrutiny. Outright deception triggers something worse: a mandatory ten-year ban from the UK. If the Home Office finds that you provided false information, used fraudulent documents, or concealed relevant facts, every future application you submit will be refused for the next decade.⁷

Standard Visitor Visa Fees and Timing

The six-month Standard Visitor Visa costs £127, roughly $176 when paid from the United States.⁸ Longer-duration visas exist for frequent travelers: $660 for up to 2 years, $1,178 for up to 5 years, and $1,471 for up to 10 years. Each stay is still capped at six months, but you avoid reapplying for every trip.⁹

Standard processing takes about three weeks from submission.¹⁰ Two paid upgrades are available on top of the visa fee: priority service at £500 extra for a decision within five working days, and super priority service at £1,000 extra for a decision by the end of the next working day.¹¹ VFS Global centers may also charge their own service fees, which vary by location.

What Your Green Card Actually Gets You: Transit Without Visa

This is where the Green Card genuinely changes the equation. Even if your passport country normally requires a visa for UK transit, a valid U.S. Permanent Resident Card qualifies you for the Transit Without Visa scheme. You can pass through the UK without a separate transit visa when connecting between two other countries.¹²

The scheme covers both airside transit (staying inside the secure zone between flights) and landside transit (passing through UK border control, which you may need to do to change airports or collect checked baggage). For landside transit, you must meet all of these conditions:

You arrived in the UK by air and will depart by air.
You have a confirmed onward flight leaving before 23:59 on the day after you arrived.
Your destination is outside the Common Travel Area (the UK, Ireland, the Isle of Man, and the Channel Islands).

The timing rule matters: your flight must leave before midnight the day after arrival, not the same day.¹²

You must have the physical Green Card with you. Electronic versions, printouts, and digital copies are explicitly not accepted. An expired Green Card can still qualify, but only when accompanied by a valid I-797 letter extending your permanent residency. Immigration officers retain discretion to refuse entry even if you meet the technical requirements, so carry your onward booking confirmation and be ready to explain your plans.¹²

What You Can Do Once You’re In

Whether you enter on an ETA or a Standard Visitor Visa, the permitted activities are the same. Tourism, visiting family, and attending medical appointments are all fine. Business activities are allowed but tightly defined. You can attend meetings, conferences, and interviews. You can negotiate and sign contracts. You can visit a client site or gather information for your overseas employer.¹³

What you cannot do is work for a UK employer, provide paid services directly to UK customers, or set up shop. A one-off speech at a non-commercial event is permitted; a multi-day paid training seminar is not. If your company has a UK office, you can troubleshoot, consult, and share knowledge with UK colleagues on internal projects, but only as an employee of the overseas entity handling intra-corporate tasks.¹³

A Note for Holders of U.S. Refugee Travel Documents

Green Card holders traveling on a U.S. Refugee Travel Document face a stricter rule. The UK exempts holders of refugee travel documents issued by the UK itself, but anyone traveling on a refugee document from another country, including the United States, needs a visa to enter.¹⁴ If you hold both a Refugee Travel Document and a passport from a non-visa national country, traveling on the passport with an ETA is the simpler path. If the refugee document is your only travel document, plan for a full visa application regardless of your nationality.
