A USDOT number does not expire. There is no end date printed on it and no renewal cycle that closes it out. So the practical answer is that the number lives as long as you keep it current. Miss the filing, and it stops working.
What Keeps a USDOT Number Active
Every 24 months, you must submit an updated MCS-150 (Motor Carrier Identification Report) to the FMCSA. This is required even if nothing about your business has changed. The form confirms or updates your legal business name, physical and mailing address, number of vehicles, annual mileage, cargo classifications, and hazardous materials involvement. You also have to update the MCS-150 whenever your business details change between scheduled filings. Change your company name, move your headquarters, or significantly expand your fleet, and you file the change right away rather than waiting for the next cycle.
When Your Biennial Update Is Due
Your filing month and year are set by the last two digits of your USDOT number. The second-to-last digit tells you the year: odd means you file in odd-numbered years, even means even-numbered years. An example. If your USDOT number ends in 34, the second-to-last digit (3) is odd and the last digit (4) points to April. What Happens if Your Number Goes Inactive
Deactivation means you cannot legally operate a single commercial vehicle. If you are stopped at a roadside inspection with an inactive DOT number, you will be placed out of service on the spot, and the truck stays where it is until the problem is resolved.4eCFR. 49 CFR 392.9a – Operating Authority Violations For time-sensitive freight, that can cascade into breach-of-contract claims quickly.

Inactive status also shows up on your public safety record, which shippers and brokers routinely check through the FMCSA’s online tools. Even once you reactivate, the gap remains visible and can hurt you with shippers that run strict carrier qualification programs.
How to Reactivate an Inactive DOT Number
If your number was deactivated for missing a biennial update, reactivation is straightforward: submit the appropriate MCS-150 series form with current information. If your number was revoked because you failed a new entrant safety audit, the process is different and more involved. If you also need to reinstate operating authority (an MC number), handle the DOT number first. How to Check Your Status
You can confirm whether your USDOT number is active at any time through the FMCSA’s SAFER (Safety and Fitness Electronic Records) system. Search by DOT number, MC number, or company name to see registration status, safety record, and inspection history.8Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration. Checking a few weeks after you file your biennial update is worth the minute it takes; finding out from a roadside inspector that your number went inactive is the worst possible way to learn it.
Other Ways a DOT Number Can Stop Working
Missing the biennial update is the most common trigger, but not the only one. New carriers enter an 18-month probationary period under the New Entrant Safety Assurance Program, and an FMCSA or state-certified auditor conducts a safety audit, usually within the first 12 months. One boundary worth naming. A USDOT number alone does not authorize for-hire interstate transportation of regulated commodities or passengers; that requires separate operating authority (an MC number), and operating without it when it is required carries a minimum penalty of $13,676 per violation for property carriers and $34,116 per violation for passenger carriers.10Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration. The short version: your DOT number does not expire, but the FMCSA can shut it off. File the MCS-150 on your assigned month every two years, update it whenever your business details change, and check SAFER after you file. That is what keeps the number active.
