Whether you pay tax on NS&I savings depends on which product you hold. Premium Bonds, Direct ISAs, and Junior ISAs are entirely tax-free. Every other NS&I account pays taxable interest, but most savers still owe nothing because the Personal Savings Allowance shelters up to £1,000 of interest a year for basic rate taxpayers.
Which NS&I Products Are Tax-Free
Three products sit outside the tax system completely.
Premium Bond prizes are free from both UK Income Tax and Capital Gains Tax, including the £1 million jackpot.1NS&I. Premium Bonds The winnings are treated as prizes from a monthly draw rather than as investment returns, which is what keeps them out of income tax altogether.
Direct ISAs and Junior ISAs are tax-free because the ISA wrapper itself is tax-free. Interest earned inside one does not count toward your taxable income and does not use up your Personal Savings Allowance.2NS&I. Our Saving Products The annual ISA subscription limit is £20,000, with a separate lower limit for Junior ISAs. Because the tax-free status is built into the account, it applies whatever your income or tax band.
Which NS&I Products Are Taxable
Everything else NS&I offers pays interest that counts as taxable income:
- Direct Saver, an easy-access variable-rate account
- Income Bonds, variable-rate bonds paying interest monthly
- British Savings Bonds, the current name for Guaranteed Growth Bonds and Guaranteed Income Bonds at fixed terms of one to five years3NS&I. British Savings Bonds
- Green Savings Bonds, a three-year fixed-term product
- Investment Account, a variable-rate account with a lower rate
All of these pay interest gross. NS&I does not deduct tax before the money reaches you, so you receive the full amount and the responsibility for paying any tax owed falls on you.4GOV.UK. Income Tax Personal Savings Allowance Update
One trap worth flagging: with Guaranteed Growth Bonds, all the accumulated interest is taxable in the single tax year the bond matures, not spread across the years you held it.5NS&I. Guaranteed Growth Bonds Five years of interest on a five-year bond lands in one year. If you are anywhere near your Personal Savings Allowance limit, that lump can push you over and trigger a bill you did not expect.
Why Most People Owe Nothing: The Personal Savings Allowance
The Personal Savings Allowance decides whether taxable NS&I interest actually results in a tax bill. It is a nil-rate band, meaning a slice of interest is taxed at zero percent.6Legislation.gov.uk. Finance Act 2016 – Section 4 The size of the slice depends on your income tax band:
- Basic rate taxpayers (income up to £50,270): £1,000 tax-free
- Higher rate taxpayers (income £50,271 to £125,140): £500 tax-free
- Additional rate taxpayers (income above £125,140): no allowance7GOV.UK. Tax on Savings Interest
The allowance covers all your savings interest combined, not only NS&I. Interest from banks, building societies, peer-to-peer lending, and NS&I taxable products is totalled together. Anything above the allowance is taxed at your marginal rate: 20%, 40%, or 45%.8GOV.UK. Income Tax Rates and Personal Allowances Interest inside an ISA and prizes from Premium Bonds are excluded from the total.
The Starting Rate for Savings
If your non-savings income is low, a second relief stacks on top. The starting rate for savings shelters up to £5,000 of interest at zero percent, but only when your non-savings income (wages, pensions, rental income) does not exceed £17,570 in the 2026/27 tax year.7GOV.UK. Tax on Savings Interest For every pound of non-savings income above the £12,570 personal allowance, the £5,000 band shrinks by a pound.
Combined with the Personal Savings Allowance, a basic rate taxpayer with low earned income could receive up to £6,000 of savings interest before owing a penny. This mainly helps retirees on modest state pensions and part-time workers.
How HMRC Finds Out and Collects the Tax
NS&I reports your balances and interest to HMRC, and so do banks and building societies.9NS&I. The Common Reporting Standard HMRC adds the figures together to check whether you have gone over your allowance.
If you are employed or drawing a pension, HMRC usually collects any tax owed by adjusting your PAYE tax code for the following year, taking the extra out of your wages or pension in small amounts across the year. The estimate is based on the previous year’s interest, so the code may lag reality if your savings income changes. Any over- or underpayment gets settled by a tax calculation letter after the year ends.7GOV.UK. Tax on Savings Interest
You need to register for Self Assessment if your total income from savings and investments exceeds £10,000 in a tax year, even if most of it falls within your allowance.7GOV.UK. Tax on Savings Interest Anyone already filing Self Assessment for other reasons must include the NS&I interest under “untaxed UK interest.” Missing the income off can bring penalties and interest on the underpaid tax.
If you have exceeded your allowance and no letter has arrived from HMRC by 31 March of the following tax year, contact HMRC yourself. Waiting can lead to penalties.
If You Are a US Citizen or Dual National
The UK tax-free status of Premium Bonds and ISAs does not carry over to the US tax system. The US taxes worldwide income for its citizens, green card holders, and other US tax residents, and it does not recognise these wrappers.
Premium Bond prizes are reportable as income on a US tax return because the IRS treats prizes and awards as part of gross income. Convert to US dollars at the exchange rate on the date of receipt. Interest inside a Direct ISA is likewise taxable for US purposes, since the wrapper exists only under UK law.
NS&I accounts also count as foreign financial accounts. If the combined value of all your foreign accounts crosses $10,000 at any point in the year, you must file FinCEN Form 114, known as the FBAR.10Internal Revenue Service. Report of Foreign Bank and Financial Accounts (FBAR) FATCA reporting on Form 8938 may apply at higher thresholds. Neither NS&I nor HMRC files these on your behalf, and the penalties for missed FBAR filings are steep.
