Do You Need to Freeze Credit With All 3 Agencies?

Yes. To fully protect yourself, you need to freeze your credit with all 3 bureaus — Equifax, Experian, and TransUnion — by contacting each one separately. Each bureau keeps its own file on you, and a freeze placed at one has no effect on the other two. Federal law makes every freeze free to place and free to lift, however many times you do it.

Why One Freeze Doesn’t Cover the Others

Equifax, Experian, and TransUnion are independent, competing companies. They do not share security freeze information with each other, so a freeze at one bureau leaves your file wide open at the other two.1Consumer Financial Protection Bureau. That matters because of how lenders check credit. When someone applies for a new account, the lender usually pulls a report from just one bureau, and you have no way to predict which. Freeze two of the three, and a thief who happens to apply with a lender that uses the unfrozen bureau can still get approved in your name.

Fraud alerts work differently. Place a fraud alert at any one of the three bureaus, and that bureau is required by law to notify the other two.2Office of the Law Revision Counsel. 15 U.S. Code 1681c-1 – Identity Theft Prevention; Fraud Alerts and Active Duty Alerts No similar rule exists for freezes. Three bureaus means three requests.

How to Place the Freeze at Each Bureau

You can place a freeze online, by phone, or by mail. Each bureau will ask for your full legal name, Social Security number, date of birth, and current and previous addresses. You may also need a copy of a government-issued ID or a recent utility bill, especially if you have moved recently or have a thin credit history. Give the information exactly as it appears on your legal documents; mismatches trigger extra verification.

Each bureau’s online portal uses two-factor authentication, sending a verification code by text message or email. If the automated verification can’t confirm your identity, you may have to mail photocopies of your Social Security card along with a bank statement or utility bill.

A freeze costs nothing. Federal law requires the three nationwide bureaus to place and remove freezes free of charge, whether you request them online, by phone, or by mail. A freeze also has no effect on your credit score.6Federal Trade Commission. Credit Freezes and Fraud Alerts

How Fast the Freeze Takes Effect

If you request the freeze online or by phone, the bureau must place it within one business day. By mail, the bureau has three business days after receiving your letter.7USAGov. Save Your PINs and Logins

Each bureau will give you a confirmation number, create an account login, or issue a PIN. You will need these credentials later to lift or remove the freeze, so store them somewhere secure like a password manager or locked file. Losing them can delay you when you need credit quickly. TransUnion no longer requires a PIN for phone or mail changes, verifying identity instead through personal information and security questions.8TransUnion. Freeze Support Center – Credit Freeze FAQs

What the Freeze Actually Blocks

A freeze prevents new creditors from viewing your credit report, which stops almost anyone — including you — from opening new accounts while it is active.6Federal Trade Commission. Credit Freezes and Fraud Alerts Since most lenders will not approve an application without pulling a report, the freeze shuts down fraudulent accounts before they open.

Several parties keep access even while a freeze is in place:1Consumer Financial Protection Bureau. What Is a Credit Freeze or Security Freeze on My Credit Report

  • Banks and credit card companies you already have accounts with.
  • Child support enforcement agencies and certain other government entities.
  • Credit monitoring services you have hired.

The federal freeze law also does not apply to employment screening, tenant screening, or insurance underwriting.1Consumer Financial Protection Bureau. Lifting the Freeze When You Need Credit

When you want to apply for a loan, mortgage, or credit card, you need to temporarily lift (sometimes called a “thaw”) or permanently remove the freeze at the relevant bureau. Use the same online portal, phone number, or mailing address where you placed it, and have your PIN or account login ready.

You have two ways to lift it:

  • A time-based lift, where you pick a date range and the freeze automatically snaps back into place when the window closes.
  • A creditor-specific lift, where you authorize one particular lender while keeping everyone else locked out.

Federal law requires bureaus to lift a freeze within one hour when you request it online or by phone. Mail requests take up to three business days after the bureau receives your letter.7USAGov. Freezing Credit for a Child Under 16

Children are frequent identity theft targets because the fraud often goes undetected for years. Federal law lets parents and legal guardians place a security freeze on behalf of a child under 16. If the bureaus do not already have a file for the child — common since most minors have no credit history — they must create one solely to freeze it, and that file cannot be used for any credit purpose.11Federal Trade Commission. New Protections Available for Minors Under 16

You will need to prove your authority over the child, typically with a birth certificate. A child welfare or probation agency representative acting for a young person in foster care must show official documentation certifying the child is in the agency’s care.11Federal Trade Commission. New Protections Available for Minors Under 16 As with your own file, you need to submit a separate request to each bureau.
