If you’re deciding between credit monitoring vs. a security freeze, the freeze wins for most people. A security freeze blocks new creditors from pulling your report, which stops most fraudulent accounts before they open. Monitoring only tells you after the fact that something already happened. Freezes are free under federal law at all three nationwide bureaus, take minutes to set up, and have no effect on your credit score.1Federal Trade Commission. Credit Freezes and Fraud Alerts Paid monitoring, which typically runs $15 to $35 a month, is a weaker tool at a higher price.
What Each Tool Actually Does
Credit monitoring scans your files at one or more bureaus and sends alerts when something changes: a new hard inquiry, a newly opened account, a change in credit limits, updated personal information, late payments, or public records like bankruptcies. Some services also watch dark-web databases for your Social Security number. The problem is that monitoring is reactive. By the time the notification arrives, the fraudulent account exists, and you still have to call the creditor, dispute the account, and clean up the damage.
A security freeze works at the gate. It restricts the three nationwide bureaus from releasing your report to anyone requesting it to open a new account. Since lenders pull a credit report before approving almost any application, a freeze makes it nearly impossible for someone using your stolen information to get approved in the first place. The freeze stays in place until you remove it.
Why a Freeze Beats Paid Monitoring for Most People
Three reasons the freeze wins the comparison.
First, the price. Federal law requires all three nationwide bureaus to place and lift freezes at no charge.2Office of the Law Revision Counsel. 15 U.S. Code 1681c-1 – Identity Theft Prevention; Fraud Alerts and Security Freezes You contact each bureau separately, online, by phone, or by mail.3USAGov. How to Place or Lift a Security Freeze on Your Credit Report Each bureau issues a PIN or password you’ll use to lift the freeze later.
Second, the mechanics are fast. When you need to apply for a loan or a new credit card, you temporarily lift the freeze at the relevant bureau. Online and phone requests must be processed within one hour.4Federal Trade Commission. Starting Today, New Federal Law Allows Consumers to Place Free Credit Freezes and Yearlong Fraud Alerts Mail requests take up to three business days. Then you refreeze.
Third, a freeze has no effect on your credit score.1Federal Trade Commission. Credit Freezes and Fraud Alerts It changes no data and signals nothing negative to lenders. It only controls who can view the report.
Paid monitoring sometimes bundles identity theft insurance or dark-web scanning to justify the price. Before paying, check whether your bank or credit card issuer already offers basic monitoring for free. Many do.
What a Freeze Will Not Stop
A freeze is the strongest single tool against new-account fraud, but it is not a complete identity theft solution. Your existing creditors can still review your file for account management, like deciding whether to raise a credit limit. Government agencies, including child support enforcement, retain access. Companies you’ve authorized to monitor your credit still get through, and you can always pull your own reports.5Consumer Financial Protection Bureau. What Is a Credit Freeze or Security Freeze on My Credit Report
A freeze also does nothing about fraud that doesn’t require a new credit inquiry. Unauthorized transactions on existing accounts, tax refund fraud, and medical identity theft all happen outside the credit report. Plan separately for those risks.
Credit Locks Are Not the Same Thing
Each bureau sells a proprietary “credit lock” product that sounds similar to a freeze. A lock lets you toggle access through an app, which can feel more convenient than managing freeze PINs. Some lock products are free at a basic tier; others are bundled into paid subscriptions.
The real difference is legal standing. A security freeze is guaranteed by federal statute, with specific requirements for how placement, removal, and timing must work.2Office of the Law Revision Counsel. 15 U.S. Code 1681c-1 – Identity Theft Prevention; Fraud Alerts and Security Freezes A credit lock is governed by the bureau’s terms of service, which can change, and your legal remedies may be more limited if something goes wrong. If a bureau is pushing you toward a lock product, remember that you already have the right to a free statutory freeze that does roughly the same job with stronger backing.
Fraud Alerts as a Lighter Alternative
A fraud alert is less restrictive than a freeze. When one is on your file, any lender pulling your report is supposed to take extra steps to verify that the applicant is really you. You only need to contact one bureau; that bureau must notify the other two.
An initial fraud alert is available to anyone who suspects they are or may become a victim of identity theft. It lasts one year and can be renewed.2Office of the Law Revision Counsel. 15 U.S. Code 1681c-1 – Identity Theft Prevention; Fraud Alerts and Security Freezes It’s a reasonable first step after a data breach if you aren’t ready for a full freeze, though it depends on lenders actually running the verification.
An extended fraud alert lasts seven years and is available if you’ve already been a victim and filed a report at IdentityTheft.gov or with law enforcement.2Office of the Law Revision Counsel. 15 U.S. Code 1681c-1 – Identity Theft Prevention; Fraud Alerts and Security Freezes You can renew it, but you’ll need to resubmit your identity theft report.1Federal Trade Commission. Pair the Freeze With Free Weekly Credit Reports
You don’t need a paid service to review your credit files. The three major bureaus permanently allow you to pull your report from each one once a week at no charge through AnnualCreditReport.com.6Federal Trade Commission. You’ll need to provide your name, Social Security number, date of birth, and address. A freeze plus regular review of these reports catches most of what monitoring would catch, for free.
Close the Tax Fraud Gap With an IRS IP PIN
A freeze does nothing to stop someone from filing a fraudulent tax return with your Social Security number. For that, the IRS offers a separate tool: the Identity Protection PIN. Anyone with a Social Security number or Individual Taxpayer Identification Number can enroll, and parents can request one for dependents.9Internal Revenue Service. Get an Identity Protection PIN It’s a six-digit number that changes each year and must appear on your federal return. Without it, the IRS rejects any return filed under your Social Security number.
The easiest path is through your IRS online account. If you can’t verify your identity online, you can file Form 15227 by mail, though that option is limited to filers with adjusted gross income below $84,000, or $168,000 for married filing jointly.9Internal Revenue Service. Freezes for Children and Vulnerable Adults
Children get targeted precisely because nobody checks a minor’s credit file, and a thief can use a child’s Social Security number for years before anyone notices. Federal law lets parents and legal guardians place a security freeze on a minor’s credit file. Parents need to show proof of authority, such as a birth certificate, to freeze or unfreeze the file.10Federal Trade Commission. New Protections Available for Minors Under 16 Child welfare agency representatives can do the same for children in foster care by providing documentation certifying the child is in their care.
Guardians and conservators of incapacitated adults have the same ability. You’ll need to give the bureaus proof of your authority, such as a court order or valid power of attorney, along with proof of your own identity.11Federal Trade Commission. When Paid Monitoring Still Earns Its Price
A freeze plus free weekly reports covers the bases for most people. Paid monitoring isn’t always wasted, though. A few situations where it adds real value:
- Active fraud cleanup. If you’re already resolving identity theft across multiple accounts, real-time alerts across all three bureaus can save time during a chaotic stretch.
- Dark-web scanning. Some paid services watch underground marketplaces for your personal data. Free tools typically don’t, and the early warning can matter.
- Post-breach offers. After major breaches, the affected company often provides free monitoring for a year or two. Accept it. Don’t pay to continue once the free period ends unless you have a specific reason.
- Bundled identity theft insurance. Some plans reimburse expenses from recovery work. Whether that justifies a monthly fee depends on your risk and what your homeowner’s or renter’s insurance already covers.
If you only do one thing: freeze your credit at all three bureaus, then decide whether anything else is worth paying for.
