Yes, you need a passport to go to Curaçao. Every air traveler, including U.S. and Canadian citizens, must arrive with a valid passport book, and almost everyone also has to file a Digital Immigration Card online before departure. A passport card, birth certificate, or driver’s license will not get you through immigration at the airport in Willemstad.
Passport Validity by Nationality
U.S. citizens only need a passport that is valid for the length of the stay.1U.S. Department of State. Curaçao International Travel Information Canadian citizens face a stricter rule: the passport must be valid for at least six months beyond the expected date of departure from the island.2Government of Canada. Travel Advice and Advisories for Curaçao If you hold another nationality, plan around the six-month standard, which is what Curaçao immigration applies to most travelers.
Two other conditions apply regardless of where you are from. The passport has to be in good physical condition with at least one blank page for the entry stamp.1U.S. Department of State. Curaçao International Travel Information And it cannot be more than ten years old.3Curaçao Tourist Board. Curaçao Travel Updates That second rule occasionally catches travelers whose passports are technically still valid but were issued more than a decade ago.
Why a Passport Card Won’t Work
A U.S. passport card is not accepted for flights to Curaçao. Passport cards are built for land and sea crossings between the U.S., Canada, Mexico, Bermuda, and the Caribbean, and they are not valid for international air travel. Since almost everyone reaches Curaçao by plane, a card-only traveler needs to apply for a full passport book before the trip.
The card comes up in one situation: closed-loop cruises that leave from and return to the same U.S. port. U.S. Customs and Border Protection allows American citizens on those sailings to re-enter the country using a passport card, a birth certificate with a government-issued photo ID, or an enhanced driver’s license. Curaçao itself still expects a passport book at the port in Willemstad. Show up without one and you may not be permitted ashore. A passport book is the only document that satisfies both Curaçao’s entry rules and the return to the United States.
The Digital Immigration Card
Every visitor must complete a Digital Immigration Card (DI Card) before arrival. The form goes through the official Curaçao Entry Portal and must be submitted within seven days before your departure.4Official Curacao Entry Portal. Official Curacao Entry Portal Save the confirmation to your phone or print it; immigration officers may ask to see it on arrival.
The portal defines a “visitor” as someone staying at least one night and no more than 90 nights.4Official Curacao Entry Portal. Official Curacao Entry Portal Cruise passengers who go ashore for the day and sleep back on the ship generally fall outside that definition and do not need to file one.
Do You Need a Visa
U.S. and Canadian citizens do not need a visa for tourist visits. Most visa-exempt travelers can stay up to 90 days within any 180-day rolling period. U.S. nationals get a longer allowance: up to 180 consecutive days within any 365-day period, the same rule that applies to Dutch citizens.5Curaçao Tourist Board. Do I Need a Visa to Visit Curaçao?
Travelers whose nationality does require a visa apply for a Caribbean visa through the nearest embassy or consulate of the Kingdom of the Netherlands. That visa allows stays of up to 90 days within a 180-day period.6NetherlandsWorldwide. Short-Stay Caribbean Visa Two exemptions can save you the application:
- A valid multiple-entry short-stay Schengen visa, or a residence permit for the Netherlands or another Schengen country.
- A valid residence permit from the United States or Canada.7NetherlandsWorldwide. Do I Need a Visa for the Caribbean Parts of the Kingdom
What Officers Can Ask at Immigration
Beyond the passport and DI Card, officers can ask for two things at the counter. The first is proof that you have a way to leave, usually a return or onward flight or cruise booking. The second is proof that you can support yourself during the stay. The benchmark is roughly $150 per person per day if you are staying in a hotel, or about $100 per person per day if you are staying with friends or family.3Curaçao Tourist Board. These checks are not run on every tourist. If they do come up, a credit card statement, a bank printout, or a hotel confirmation on your phone resolves things quickly. Travelers on one-way tickets or planning long stays are the ones most likely to be asked.
Traveling with Children
Documentation for minors gets more attention here than in many destinations. For foreign children, including American and Canadian minors, immigration expects a birth certificate, the child’s travel documents, and a signed consent form from any parent who is not on the trip.8Government of Curaçao. Circular Traveling with Minors Notarization of the consent form is not written into the rule, but it is strongly recommended, and some officers view an unnotarized letter with skepticism. A notary’s fee for one signature is usually a few dollars, which is cheap insurance against being turned back.
If a child is a Curaçaoan national or is traveling with only one parent under other family circumstances, additional civil-record extracts and a signed extract from the Parental Authority Register can also be required.9Ministerie van Justitie. Traveling with Minors
Cruise Passengers
Day-tripping cruise passengers sit in a gray zone. Because the DI Card portal defines visitors as people staying at least one night, passengers going ashore for the day and returning to the ship generally do not need to file it.4Official Curacao Entry Portal. Official Curacao Entry Portal You still clear Curaçao’s immigration checkpoint when you disembark, and a passport book is the most reliable document to hand over.
Closed-loop cruise passengers sometimes hear that a birth certificate and photo ID are enough. That is true for CBP on the way back into the United States. It does not guarantee that Curaçao will let you off the ship, and if a medical emergency or an itinerary change forces you to fly home from the island, you will need a passport book to board any commercial flight. That is why cruise lines still recommend the book.
Yellow Fever and Routing
Flying direct from the U.S. or Canada, you do not need a yellow fever vaccination. If your route includes a transit or layover longer than 12 hours in a country where yellow fever is present, meaning parts of sub-Saharan Africa and South America, proof of vaccination is required. The rule applies to travelers nine months of age and older.10Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. Curaçao – Traveler View
Curaçao does not require travel health insurance for entry, but most U.S. health plans are not accepted at hospitals on the island. If coverage matters to you, a travel insurance policy with emergency medical and evacuation benefits fills that gap.
