No, you do not need a DUNS number for a business credit card. Every major issuer underwrites business card applications on your personal credit, your business revenue, and a federal tax ID. A Dun & Bradstreet file is useful for other things, but it is not part of the application.
What Issuers Actually Check
Banks lean on consumer credit data when they decide whether to approve a business card. The issuer pulls your personal credit report from one or more of the major consumer bureaus, and your personal FICO score, payment history, and existing debt load drive the approval decision and set your initial credit limit and interest rate. The business itself gets looked at through revenue, time in operation, and banking relationships, not through a D&B profile.
This holds for larger businesses too. Card issuers are extending revolving credit, not underwriting commercial loans or trade credit. Virtually every business credit card carries a personal guarantee, which means you agree to be personally liable for the full balance if the business cannot pay. That is true regardless of entity type. An LLC or corporation does not shield you from the card debt. Because the risk ultimately falls on an individual, the individual’s creditworthiness is what matters most, and new businesses with no commercial history get approved every day on the strength of the owner’s personal credit.
At the application itself, expect to provide a tax identification number — typically an Employer Identification Number from the IRS, which serves as your company’s federal tax ID for bank accounts, returns, and licenses1Internal Revenue Service. Employer Identification Number — along with your personal Social Security Number, which the bank uses to pull your consumer report and set up the personal guarantee. Beyond those two numbers, you’ll fill in:
- Legal business name as registered with your state, not a DBA or trade name.
- Physical business address. Banks must collect a principal place of business for non-individual entities under federal customer identification rules, and a home address works for home-based businesses.2eCFR. 31 CFR 1020.220 – Customer Identification Program Requirements for Banks
- Annual revenue, self-reported, which the bank uses to gauge how much credit the business can carry.
- Years in business and number of employees, used to size and categorize the risk.
Nowhere on that list is a DUNS number.
Sole Proprietors Can Apply With Just an SSN
If you freelance, consult, or run any unincorporated business without employees, you may not have an EIN. That is not a problem. Major issuers let you enter your Social Security Number in place of an EIN on the application.3Chase. Can You Get a Business Credit Card Without an EIN The IRS treats your SSN as your taxpayer identification number when you operate as a sole proprietor, so it meets the bank’s identification requirements. No formal entity, no DUNS number, no commercial credit history required.
Where a DUNS Number Does Matter
A DUNS number comes into play outside the card world, in trade credit, vendor accounts, and commercial lending where Dun & Bradstreet data gets checked. The most common case is opening net-30 accounts with suppliers, which let you buy goods or services and pay the invoice within 30 days. Some vendors require a DUNS number to set one up; Creative Analytics, for example, requires both an EIN and a DUNS number along with active state incorporation to qualify for its net-30 terms.
The point of those accounts is to build a business credit profile that lives independently of your personal score. When vendors report your on-time payments against your DUNS number, that history feeds your Dun & Bradstreet file and, over time, your PAYDEX score, which lenders, insurers, and potential partners pull when deciding whether to extend credit or set terms.4Dun & Bradstreet. What is a PAYDEX Score A strong business credit profile can help you qualify for better loan terms down the road, even though it has nothing to do with getting approved for a card today.
One more thing to know about commercial credit: Experian and Equifax also maintain business files, and you don’t apply for those the way you request a DUNS number. Those bureaus create a file automatically when creditors or vendors report your payment activity. So your business may already have commercial credit data at other bureaus without you ever touching D&B.

One Common Myth Worth Clearing Up
You may have read that a DUNS number is required for federal government contracts. That stopped being true on April 4, 2022, when the federal government replaced DUNS with the Unique Entity ID (UEI), generated through SAM.gov. The UEI is now the only identifier accepted across federal award systems, and getting one is free.6U.S. General Services Administration (GSA). Unique Entity ID is Here The DUNS number still exists for D&B’s commercial credit purposes, but it has no role in federal procurement — and no role in getting a business credit card.
