Do You Have to Pay Taxes on DoorDash Tips? Deductions and SE Tax

Yes, you have to pay taxes on DoorDash tips. Every tip counts as taxable income on your federal return, whether a customer added it in the app or handed you cash at the door. For tax years 2025 through 2028, a new federal deduction can eliminate income tax on up to $25,000 of tip income each year, but self-employment tax still applies to the full amount.1Internal Revenue Service. Tip Income Is Taxable and Must Be Reported

Why Every Tip Is Taxable

Federal law defines gross income as all income from whatever source, including fees and commissions for services.2Office of the Law Revision Counsel. 26 USC 61 – Gross Income Defined The IRS treats tips the same as base delivery pay: business income, not gifts. That applies equally to in-app tips and cash tips handed to you directly.1Internal Revenue Service. Tip Income Is Taxable and Must Be Reported

DoorDash classifies you as an independent contractor, so nothing is withheld from your pay.3Internal Revenue Service. Independent Contractor (Self-Employed) or Employee? Calculating and paying both income tax and self-employment tax on your tips is your responsibility, not DoorDash’s.

The Deduction That Can Zero Out Income Tax on Your Tips

The One Big Beautiful Bill Act created a federal deduction for qualified tips that runs from tax year 2025 through 2028.4Internal Revenue Service. Four limits shape how much of your tip income actually escapes federal income tax:

To claim it, complete Schedule 1-A (Form 1040) and carry the result to Form 1040, line 13b.8Internal Revenue Service. 2025 Schedule 1-A (Form 1040) Tips must be reported on a Form 1099-NEC, Form 1099-K, or directly by you before you can deduct them.7Internal Revenue Service. Self-Employment Tax Still Applies

Even when the new deduction wipes out your income tax on tips, you still owe self-employment tax on your full net earnings, tips included. The rate is 15.3%: 12.4% for Social Security and 2.9% for Medicare.9Internal Revenue Service. What DoorDash Reports and What You Track Yourself

Earn $600 or more on the platform in a year and DoorDash sends you a Form 1099-NEC through the Dasher app by January 31. Under the new tip-reporting rules, DoorDash now reports your tip income separately from the 1099-NEC and emails that breakdown by January 31 as well.13DoorDash. Dasher Guide to Taxes

Earning less than $600 doesn’t erase the obligation. You must still file a return and pay self-employment tax if your net earnings from all self-employment sources reach $400.10Office of the Law Revision Counsel. 26 USC 1402 – Definitions And the 1099-NEC never captures cash tips a customer hands you at the door. Those you track yourself in a log with the date and amount of each payment, then add to the app-reported total on Schedule C.

Deductions That Cut Your Tax Bill

Business expenses on Schedule C reduce both your income tax and your self-employment tax, which makes them worth more than the new tips deduction dollar for dollar. For most drivers, mileage is the largest single deduction. The 2026 standard mileage rate is 72.5 cents per business mile.14Internal Revenue Service. IRS Sets 2026 Business Standard Mileage Rate at 72.5 Cents per Mile, Up 2.5 Cents Log 15,000 business miles and that’s a $10,875 deduction.

Other common write-offs for delivery drivers:

  • The business-use share of your cell phone plan. You cannot deduct the full cost if you also use the phone personally.15Internal Revenue Service. Instructions for Schedule C (Form 1040)
  • Supplies like insulated bags, phone mounts, and chargers used for deliveries.
  • Health insurance premiums for yourself, your spouse, and your dependents, if you’re not eligible for coverage through a spouse’s employer. This one is an adjustment to income, not a Schedule C expense.

You choose either the standard mileage rate or actual vehicle expenses (gas, insurance, repairs, depreciation), not both. If you want to use the standard mileage rate, you have to choose it the first year you use the car for business. Commuting from home to your first pickup isn’t deductible, but miles between deliveries and the trip home after your last drop-off generally are. The IRS expects a contemporaneous log with the date, starting point, destination, business purpose, and miles driven for each trip, plus year-start and year-end odometer readings.

Quarterly Estimated Payments

Since nothing is withheld, most drivers need to make quarterly estimated tax payments. The IRS expects them from anyone who anticipates owing $1,000 or more after subtracting withholdings and credits.16Internal Revenue Service. Estimated Taxes Payments are due April 15, June 15, September 15, and January 15 of the following year.17Internal Revenue Service. Form 1040-ES – Estimated Tax for Individuals

To avoid an underpayment penalty, your total payments must reach at least 90% of the current year’s tax or 100% of last year’s tax, whichever is smaller. If your prior-year adjusted gross income exceeded $150,000 (or $75,000 for married filing separately), the prior-year threshold rises to 110%.17Internal Revenue Service. What Happens If You Skip Tips on Your Return

Miss the April 15 deadline and the failure-to-file penalty is 5% of the unpaid tax for each month or partial month you’re late, capped at 25%.18Internal Revenue Service. Failure to File Penalty Interest on any unpaid tax also runs from the original due date.

Underreport income by leaving cash tips off your return and the IRS can impose a 20% accuracy-related penalty on the underpaid tax when the underreporting is due to negligence or careless disregard of the rules.19Office of the Law Revision Counsel. 26 USC 6662 – Imposition of Accuracy-Related Penalty on Underpayments Reporting every tip, in-app and cash, and making timely quarterly payments is the straightforward way to keep those penalties off your return.
