Do You Have to Pay for TransUnion: Free Access vs. Paid Features

No, you do not have to pay for TransUnion to see your credit information or protect your file. Federal law and TransUnion’s own free account cover the things most people actually need: your credit report, credit monitoring alerts, dispute tools, fraud alerts, and credit freezes all cost nothing.1Federal Trade Commission. Free Credit Reports TransUnion does sell paid subscriptions, but what they add on top is narrow: identity theft insurance, dark-web scanning, and dedicated fraud resolution support.

What You Can Get From TransUnion Without Paying

Two separate free channels exist, and it helps to keep them straight.

The first is the federal program at AnnualCreditReport.com. The Fair Credit Reporting Act requires each of the three nationwide credit bureaus to give you a free report once every 12 months,2Office of the Law Revision Counsel. 15 USC 1681j – Charges for Certain Disclosures and all three have permanently extended that to one free report per bureau per week.1Federal Trade Commission. Free Credit Reports So you can pull a fresh TransUnion report every seven days at no cost. AnnualCreditReport.com is the only website authorized by federal law to fill these orders.3Consumer Financial Protection Bureau. How Do I Get a Free Copy of My Credit Reports Other sites that advertise “free” reports often require a paid subscription first.

The second channel is TransUnion itself. A free TransUnion Service Center account lets you refresh your TransUnion report daily, manage disputes, place fraud alerts, and set up credit freezes at no cost.4TransUnion. Your Free Daily Credit Reports (and Scores) TransUnion also offers a free subscription tier that delivers daily report updates, credit score factors, and basic monitoring alerts without asking for a credit card.

Federal law adds a few more free-report triggers that work regardless of how recently you pulled one. You can request a free TransUnion report directly from the bureau if:

What TransUnion Actually Charges For

Two things on TransUnion’s own site cost money.

One is a standalone credit score. Through the Service Center, you can buy a VantageScore 3.0 score for $0.99 plus tax, which gives you daily score access for 30 days.4TransUnion. Your Free Daily Credit Reports (and Scores) Before paying, check whether your bank, credit card issuer, or a free app already provides one. Many do.

The other is TransUnion’s paid subscription tiers. These bundle features like daily score tracking, dark-web monitoring, identity theft insurance, and dedicated fraud resolution support. Monthly fees generally run from roughly $20 to $40 depending on the level of coverage, with discounts for annual billing. Plan names and prices change periodically, so check TransUnion.com for current offerings before subscribing.

The decision is narrow. Your free report already shows every account, balance, and payment history entry that lenders report. Credit monitoring alerts are included in the free tier. The features that are genuinely exclusive to paid plans are identity theft insurance, dark-web scanning for your personal information, and dedicated support if your identity is stolen. If none of those appeal to you, there is no reason to pay.

Credit Freezes and Fraud Alerts Are Free By Law

A credit freeze blocks new creditors from accessing your TransUnion report, which makes it much harder for someone to open accounts in your name. Federal law requires all three bureaus to let you freeze and unfreeze your report for free.6Consumer Financial Protection Bureau. What Is a Credit Freeze or Security Freeze on My Credit Report You can place a TransUnion freeze online through the Service Center, by phone at 800-916-8800, or by mail.7TransUnion. Credit Freeze When you need to apply for new credit, you can schedule a temporary lift up to 15 days in advance, after which the freeze automatically goes back into effect.

Even with a freeze in place, existing creditors and insurers underwriting a policy can still access your report, and you remain eligible for prescreened credit offers unless you separately opt out.

TransUnion previously offered a separate “credit lock” that worked similarly to a freeze but was often bundled with paid plans. The Consumer Financial Protection Bureau has said credit locks are no more effective than security freezes, which are free and guaranteed by law.6Consumer Financial Protection Bureau. What Is a Credit Freeze or Security Freeze on My Credit Report TransUnion announced plans to discontinue its credit lock in several products, including TransUnion Credit Monitoring and TrueIdentity, during the first half of 2025, and to direct users to the free security freeze instead.8TransUnion. Fraud alerts are also free and serve a different purpose. Instead of blocking access, a fraud alert tells lenders to verify your identity before approving new credit. You only need to contact one of the three bureaus, and that bureau must notify the other two.

  • An initial fraud alert lasts one year and is available to anyone who suspects they are or may become a victim of identity theft.9Office of the Law Revision Counsel. 15 USC 1681c-1 – Identity Theft Prevention; Fraud Alerts
  • An extended fraud alert lasts seven years and requires an identity theft report filed with the FTC at IdentityTheft.gov or a police report. It also removes you from prescreened credit offer lists for five years.10Federal Trade Commission. Credit Freezes and Fraud Alerts
  • An active-duty military alert lasts one year, can be renewed, and removes you from prescreened offer lists for two years.

Disputing Errors Is Free Too

If you find inaccurate information on your TransUnion report, you can dispute it at no charge. TransUnion must investigate, generally within 30 days, though the timeline can extend to 45 days if you filed the dispute after receiving your free annual report or if you submit additional supporting information during the investigation.11Consumer Financial Protection Bureau. How Long Does It Take To Repair an Error on a Credit Report After the investigation closes, TransUnion has five business days to notify you of the results.

The simplest route is online: log into your free Service Center account, go to the Dispute tab, select the item, choose a reason, and upload up to five supporting documents. Most online disputes resolve within about two weeks.12TransUnion. How to Dispute Your Credit Report You can also mail a written dispute to TransUnion Consumer Solutions, P.O. If the investigation does not resolve things in your favor, you can ask TransUnion to add a brief statement to your file explaining the disagreement, and that statement will appear when future creditors pull your report. You can also contact the lender directly with supporting documentation; if the lender confirms your claim, it must instruct TransUnion to update or remove the item.
